On the third day David and his men arrived in Ziklag, and the Amalekites had raided the Negev, attacked Ziklag, and burned it down.2Hulle het die vroue wat daarin was, gevange geneem, van klein tot groot; hulle het niemand doodgemaak nie. They had taken captive the women and all who were there, both young and old. They had not killed anyone, but had carried them off as they went on their way.3Toe Dawid en sy manne by die stad kom, kyk, dit was met vuur verbrand, en hulle vroue en hulle seuns en hulle dogters was gevange weggevoer. When David and his men came to the city, they found it burned down and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive.4Toe het Dawid en die volk wat by hom was, hulle stem verhef en gehuil, totdat daar in hulle geen krag was om te huil nie. So David and the troops with him lifted up their voices and wept until they had no strength left to weep.5En die twee vroue van Dawid was gevange weggevoer: Ahinoam, die Jisreëlitiese, en Abigail, die vrou van Nabal, die Karmeliet. David’s two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel, had been taken captive.6En Dawid was erg benoud, want die volk het gepraat om hom te stenig, want die siel van die hele volk was bitter, elkeen oor sy seuns en oor sy dogters; maar Dawid het homself versterk in die HERE sy God. And David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of every man grieved for his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.7Dawid het vir Abjatar, die priester, die seun van Ahimelek, gesê: “Bring tog die efod vir my nader.” Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, “Bring me the ephod.” So Abiathar brought it to him,8En Dawid het die HERE geraadpleeg en gesê: “Moet ek hierdie bende agtervolg? Sal ek hulle inhaal?” En Hy het vir hom gesê: “Agtervolg, want jy sal sekerlik inhaal en sekerlik red.”aLetterlik: by die HERE gevra.וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל דָּוִ֤ד בַּֽיהוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אֶרְדֹּ֛ף אַחֲרֵ֥י הַגְּדוּד־הַזֶּ֖ה הַֽאַשִּׂגֶ֑נּוּ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ רְדֹ֔ף כִּֽי־הַשֵּׂ֥ג תַּשִּׂ֖יג וְהַצֵּ֥ל תַּצִּֽיל׃and David inquired of the LORD: “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” the LORD replied, “for you will surely overtake them and rescue the captives.”9Dawid het gegaan, hy en die 600 man wat by hom was, en hulle het by die spruit Besor gekom, en die agtergeblewenes het gestaan. So David and his six hundred men went to the Brook of Besor, where some stayed behind10Dawid het agtervolg, hy en 400 man; en 200 man het bly staan, wat te uitgeput was om oor die spruit Besor te gaan.וַיִּרְדֹּ֣ף דָּוִ֔ד ה֖וּא וְאַרְבַּע־מֵא֣וֹת אִ֑ישׁ וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ מָאתַ֣יִם אִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר פִּגְּר֔וּ מֵעֲבֹ֖ר אֶת־נַ֥חַל הַבְּשֽׂוֹר׃because two hundred men were too exhausted to cross the brook. But David and four hundred men continued in pursuit.
Now his men found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David. They gave the man water to drink and food to eat—12Hulle het vir hom 'n stuk vyekoek gegee en twee trosse rosyne, en hy het geëet; en sy gees het na hom teruggekeer, want hy het drie dae en drie nagte geen brood geëet en geen water gedrink nie.וַיִּתְּנוּ־לוֹ֩ פֶ֨לַח דְּבֵלָ֜ה וּשְׁנֵ֤י צִמֻּקִים֙ וַיֹּ֔אכַל וַתָּ֥שָׁב רוּח֖וֹ אֵלָ֑יו כִּ֠י לֹֽא־אָ֤כַל לֶ֨חֶם֙ וְלֹא־שָׁ֣תָה מַ֔יִם שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה יָמִ֖ים וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה לֵילֽוֹת׃ סa piece of a fig cake and two clusters of raisins. So he ate and was revived, for he had not had any food or water for three days and three nights.13Dawid het vir hom gesê: “Aan wie behoort jy, en waarvandaan is jy?” Hy het gesê: “Ek is 'n Egiptiese jongman, 'n slaaf van 'n Amalekitiese man, en my heer het my agtergelaat, omdat ek vandag drie dae gelede siek geword het.” Then David asked him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” “I am an Egyptian,” he replied, “the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me three days ago when I fell ill.14“Ons het die Negev van die Keretiete binnegeval, en wat aan Juda behoort, en die Negev van Kaleb; en Siklag het ons met vuur verbrand.” We raided the Negev of the Cherethites, the territory of Judah, and the Negev of Caleb, and we burned down Ziklag.”15En Dawid het vir hom gesê: “Sal jy my na hierdie bende afbring?” En hy het gesê: “Sweer vir my by God dat jy my nie sal doodmaak en my nie in die hand van my heer sal oorlewer nie, dan sal ek jou na hierdie bende afbring.”aLetterlik: as jy my sal doodmaak en as jy my in die hand van my heer sal oorlewer.וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ דָּוִ֔ד הֲתוֹרִדֵ֖נִי אֶל־הַגְּד֣וּד הַזֶּ֑ה וַיֹּ֡אמֶר הִשָּׁבְעָה֩ לִּ֨י בֵֽאלֹהִ֜ים אִם־תְּמִיתֵ֗נִי וְאִם־תַּסְגִּרֵ֨נִי֙ בְּיַד־אֲדֹנִ֔י וְאוֹרִֽדְךָ֖ אֶל־הַגְּד֥וּד הַזֶּֽה׃“Will you lead me to these raiders?” David asked. And the man replied, “Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hand of my master, and I will lead you to them.”
So he led David down, and there were the Amalekites spread out over all the land, eating, drinking, and celebrating the great amount of plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and the land of Judah.17Dawid het hulle verslaan van die skemering af tot die aand van die volgende dag; en niemand van hulle het ontkom nie, behalwe 400 jongmanne wat op die kamele gery en gevlug het.aOf: skemering kan ook die môreskemering (dagbreek) beteken. And David struck them down from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man escaped, except four hundred young men who fled, riding off on camels.18En Dawid het alles gered wat Amalek geneem het; en sy twee vroue het Dawid gered. So David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives.19Daar was niks vir hulle vermis nie, van klein tot groot, tot by seuns en dogters en buit, en tot by alles wat hulle vir hulle geneem het; alles het Dawid teruggebring. Nothing was missing, young or old, son or daughter, or any of the plunder the Amalekites had taken. And he took all the flocks and herds, which his men drove ahead of the other livestock, calling out, “This is David’s plunder!”
When David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and who were left behind at the Brook of Besor, they came out to meet him and the troops with him. As David approached the men, he greeted them,22Toe het elke slegte en nikswerdige man onder die manne wat saam met Dawid gegaan het, geantwoord en gesê: “Omdat hulle nie saam met my gegaan het nie, sal ons nie van die buit wat ons gered het, vir hulle gee nie, behalwe vir elkeen sy vrou en sy seuns; laat hulle dié wegdryf en gaan.”וַיַּ֜עַן כָּל־אִֽישׁ־רָ֣ע וּבְלִיַּ֗עַל מֵֽהָאֲנָשִׁים֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָלְכ֣וּ עִם־דָּוִד֒ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ יַ֚עַן אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־הָלְכ֣וּ עִמִּ֔י לֹֽא־נִתֵּ֣ן לָהֶ֔ם מֵהַשָּׁלָ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִצַּ֑לְנוּ כִּֽי־אִם־אִ֤ישׁ אֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹ֙ וְאֶת־בָּנָ֔יו וְיִנְהֲג֖וּ וְיֵלֵֽכוּ׃ סbut all the wicked and worthless men among those who had gone with David said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered, except for each man’s wife and children. They may take them and go.”23Dawid het gesê: “Moenie so maak nie, my broers, met dit wat die HERE aan ons gegee het nie; Hy het ons bewaar en die bende wat teen ons gekom het, in ons hand gegee.” But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the LORD has given us. David established this statute and ordinance for Israel to this very day.
When David arrived in Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to his friends, the elders of Judah, saying, “Here is a gift for you from the plunder of the LORD’s enemies.”27Aan dié in Bet-El, en aan dié in Ramot-Negev, en aan dié in Jattir;לַאֲשֶׁ֧ר בְּבֵֽית־אֵ֛ל וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּרָמֽוֹת־נֶ֖גֶב וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּיַתִּֽר׃He sent gifts to those in Bethel, Ramoth Negev, and Jattir;28en aan dié in Aroër, en aan dié in Sifmot, en aan dié in Estemoa;וְלַאֲשֶׁ֧ר בַּעֲרֹעֵ֛ר וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּשִֽׂפְמ֖וֹת וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּאֶשְׁתְּמֹֽעַ׃ סto those in Aroer, Siphmoth, and Eshtemoa;29en aan dié in Rakal, en aan dié in die stede van die Jerahmeëliete, en aan dié in die stede van die Keniete;וְלַאֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּרָכָ֗ל וְלַֽאֲשֶׁר֙ בְּעָרֵ֣י הַיְּרַחְמְאֵלִ֔י וְלַאֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּעָרֵ֥י הַקֵּינִֽי׃to those in Racal and in the cities of the Jerahmeelites and Kenites;30en aan dié in Horma, en aan dié in Bor-Asan, en aan dié in Atak;וְלַאֲשֶׁ֧ר בְּחָרְמָ֛ה וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּבוֹר־עָשָׁ֖ן וְלַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּעֲתָֽךְ׃to those in Hormah, Bor-ashan, and Athach;31en aan dié in Hebron, en aan al die plekke waar Dawid, hy en sy manne, rondgegaan het.וְלַאֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּחֶבְר֑וֹן וּֽלְכָל־הַמְּקֹמ֛וֹת אֲשֶֽׁר־הִתְהַלֶּךְ־שָׁ֥ם דָּוִ֖ד ה֥וּא וַאֲנָשָֽׁיו׃ פand to those in Hebron and in all the places where David and his men had roamed.
