Then Samuel said to Saul, “The LORD sent me to anoint you king over His people Israel. Now therefore, listen to the words of the LORD.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed what the Amalekites did to the Israelites when they opposed them on their way up from Egypt.3“‘Gaan nou en slaan Amalek, en julle moet alles wat syne is met die ban tref, en jy mag hom nie spaar nie; maar jy moet doodmaak, van man tot vrou, van kind tot suigeling, van os tot lam, van kameel tot donkie.’”aLetterlik: aan vernietiging wy; die ban is die algehele toewyding van iets aan vernietiging. Now go and attack the Amalekites and devote to destruction all that belongs to them. Do not spare them, but put to death men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”
4Saul het die volk opgeroep en hulle by Telaim gemonster: 200 000 voetsoldate en 10 000 man van Juda. So Saul summoned the troops and numbered them at Telaim—200,000 foot soldiers and 10,000 men of Judah.5Saul het gekom tot by die stad van Amalek en het in die spruit stryd gevoer.aOf: 'n hinderlaag gelê in die spruit. And he warned the Kenites, “Since you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt, go on and get away from the Amalekites. Otherwise I will sweep you away with them.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.7Saul het Amalek verslaan van Hawila af, soos jy na Sur kom, wat voor Egipte is.aLetterlik: wat op die aangesig van Egipte is. Then Saul struck down the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt.8Hy het Agag, die koning van Amalek, lewendig gevang, en die hele volk het hy met die ban getref, met die mond van die swaard. He captured Agag king of Amalek alive, but devoted all the others to destruction with the sword.9Maar Saul en die volk het Agag gespaar, en die beste van die skape en die beeste en die tweedes en die ramme, en alles wat goed was, en hulle wou hulle nie met die ban tref nie; maar al die besit wat veragtelik en waardeloos was, dit het hulle met die ban getref.aHebreeus onduidelik. Saul and his troops spared Agag, along with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs, and the best of everything else. They were unwilling to devote them to destruction, but they devoted to destruction all that was despised and worthless.
10Toe het die woord van die HERE tot Samuel gekom en gesê:וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹֽר׃Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel, saying,11“Ek het berou dat Ek Saul koning gemaak het, want hy het teruggekeer van agter My af, en My woorde het hy nie uitgevoer nie.” נִחַ֗מְתִּי כִּֽי־הִמְלַ֤כְתִּי אֶת־שָׁאוּל֙ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ כִּֽי־שָׁב֙ מֵאַֽחֲרַ֔י וְאֶת־דְּבָרַ֖י לֹ֣א הֵקִ֑ים וַיִּ֨חַר֙ לִשְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיִּזְעַ֥ק אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה כָּל־הַלָּֽיְלָה׃“I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and cried out to the LORD all that night.12Samuel het vroeg opgestaan om Saul in die môre te ontmoet. Early in the morning Samuel got up to confront Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel, and behold, he has set up a monument for himself and has turned and gone down to Gilgal.”
When Samuel reached him, Saul said to him, “May the LORD bless you. I have carried out the LORD’s instructions.”14Samuel het gesê: “En wat is hierdie geluid van skape in my ore, en die geluid van beeste wat ek hoor?” But Samuel replied, “Then what is this bleating of sheep and lowing of cattle that I hear?”15Saul het gesê: “Van die Amalekiet het hulle hulle gebring, omdat die volk die beste van die skape en die beeste gespaar het, om te offer aan die HERE jou God; maar die res het ons met die ban getref.” Saul answered, “The troops brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but the rest we devoted to destruction.”
16Samuel het vir Saul gesê: “Hou op, en laat my jou vertel wat die HERE vannag met my gespreek het.” Toe het hy vir hom gesê: “Praat.” “Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” And Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, have you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel18En die HERE het jou op ’n pad gestuur en gesê: ‘Gaan en tref die sondaars, Amalek, met die ban, en veg teen hom totdat hulle verdelg is.’aOf: totdat jy hulle verdelg het.וַיִּשְׁלָחֲךָ֥ יְהוָ֖ה בְּדָ֑רֶךְ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֵ֣ךְ וְהַחֲרַמְתָּ֞ה אֶת־הַֽחַטָּאִים֙ אֶת־עֲמָלֵ֔ק וְנִלְחַמְתָּ֣ ב֔וֹ עַ֥ד כַּלּוֹתָ֖ם אֹתָֽם׃and sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and devote to destruction the sinful Amalekites. Fight against them until you have wiped them out.’19Waarom het jy dan nie na die stem van die HERE geluister nie, maar jou op die buit gewerp en gedoen wat kwaad is in die oë van die HERE?” So why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you rush upon the plunder and do evil in the sight of the LORD?”20Toe het Saul vir Samuel gesê: “Ek hét na die stem van die HERE geluister en gegaan op die pad waarop die HERE my gestuur het, en ek het Agag, die koning van Amalek, gebring en Amalek met die ban getref.וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל אֲשֶׁ֤ר שָׁמַ֨עְתִּי֙ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֔ה וָאֵלֵ֕ךְ בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־שְׁלָחַ֣נִי יְהוָ֑ה וָאָבִ֗יא אֶת־אֲגַג֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ עֲמָלֵ֔ק וְאֶת־עֲמָלֵ֖ק הֶחֱרַֽמְתִּי׃“But I did obey the LORD,” Saul replied. “I went on the mission that the LORD gave me. I brought back Agag king of Amalek and devoted the Amalekites to destruction.21“En die volk het van die buit geneem, skape en beeste, die eersteling van die banoffer, om te offer aan die HERE jou God in Gilgal.” The troops took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of the things devoted to destruction, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal.”22Maar Samuel het gesê:
But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and attentiveness is better than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance is like the wickedness of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king.”
Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; I have transgressed the LORD’s commandment and your instructions, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.25“En nou, vergewe tog my sonde, en keer saam met my terug, sodat ek my voor die HERE kan neerbuig.” Now therefore, please forgive my sin and return with me so I can worship the LORD.”26Maar Samuel het vir Saul gesê: “Ek sal nie saam met jou terugkeer nie, want jy het die woord van die HERE verwerp, en die HERE het jou verwerp, dat jy nie koning oor Israel sal wees nie.”וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל־שָׁא֔וּל לֹ֥א אָשׁ֖וּב עִמָּ֑ךְ כִּ֤י מָאַ֨סְתָּה֙ אֶת־דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּמְאָסְךָ֣ יְהוָ֔ה מִהְי֥וֹת מֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ס“I will not return with you,” Samuel replied. “For you have rejected the word of the LORD, and He has rejected you as king over Israel.”
As Samuel turned to go, Saul grabbed the hem of his robe, and it tore.28En Samuel het vir hom gesê: “Die HERE het vandag die koningskap van Israel van jou afgeskeur en dit aan jou naaste gegee, wat beter is as jy. So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to your neighbor who is better than you.29“En ook sal die Roem van Israel nie lieg nie en nie berou hê nie, want Hy is nie 'n mens dat Hy berou sou hê nie.”aOf: die Ewige van Israel; of: die Oorwinning van Israel.bLetterlik: getroos word. Moreover, the Glory of Israel does not lie or change His mind, for He is not a man, that He should change His mind.”30Hy het gesê: “Ek het gesondig; eer my nou tog voor die ouderlinge van my volk en voor Israel, en keer saam met my terug, dat ek my voor die HERE jou God kan neerbuig.” “Please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.” Agag came to him cheerfully, for he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”33Maar Samuel het gesê: “Soos jou swaard vroue kinderloos gemaak het, so sal jou moeder onder die vroue kinderloos wees.” But Samuel declared: “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the LORD at Gilgal.
Then Samuel went to Ramah, but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.35Samuel het Saul nie weer gesien tot die dag van sy dood nie, want Samuel het oor Saul getreur; en die HERE het berou gehad dat Hy Saul koning gemaak het oor Israel.aLetterlik: is getroos. And to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul. Samuel mourned for Saul, and the LORD regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
