When Samuel died, all Israel gathered to mourn for him; and they buried him at his home in Ramah. Then David set out and went down to the Wilderness of Paran.
2En daar was 'n man in Maon, en sy boerdery was in Karmel; en die man was baie ryk, en hy het 3 000 skape en 1 000 bokke gehad. En hy was besig om sy skape in Karmel te skeer.aLetterlik: sy werk was in Karmel; en die man was baie groot. Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel. He was a very wealthy man with a thousand goats and three thousand sheep, which he was shearing in Carmel.3En die naam van die man was Nabal, en die naam van sy vrou Abigajil. His name was Nabal, and his wife’s name was Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband, a Calebite, was harsh and evil in his dealings.
While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep.5En Dawid het tien jongmanne gestuur, en Dawid het vir die jongmanne gesê: “Gaan op na Karmel en gaan na Nabal en vra hom in my naam na sy welstand. So David sent ten young men and instructed them, “Go up to Nabal at Carmel. Greet him in my name6En julle moet so sê aan hom wat leef: Vrede vir jou, en vrede vir jou huis, en vrede vir alles wat joune is.aHebreeus onduidelik.וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֥ם כֹּ֖ה לֶחָ֑י וְאַתָּ֤ה שָׁלוֹם֙ וּבֵיתְךָ֣ שָׁל֔וֹם וְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־לְךָ֖ שָׁלֽוֹם׃and say to him, ‘Long life to you, and peace to you and to your house and to all that belongs to you.7En nou, ek het gehoor dat jy skeerders het. Nou, die herders wat joune is, was by ons; ons het hulle nie beskaam nie, en niks is by hulle vermis nie, al die dae wat hulle in Karmel was. Now I hear that it is time for shearing. When your shepherds were with us, we did not harass them, and nothing of theirs was missing the whole time they were in Carmel.8Vra jou jongmanne, en hulle sal jou vertel. Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on the day of a feast. Please give whatever you can spare to your servants and to your son David.’”
When David’s young men arrived, they relayed all these words to Nabal on behalf of David. But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of Jesse? Many servants these days are breaking away from their masters.11Sal ek dan my brood en my water en my slagvleis neem wat ek vir my skeerders geslag het, en dit gee aan manne van wie ek nie weet waar hulle vandaan is nie?” Why should I take my bread and water and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give them to these men whose origin I do not know?”12Toe het Dawid se jongmanne op hulle pad omgedraai en teruggekeer en gekom, en hulle het hom volgens al hierdie woorde vertel. So David’s men turned around and went back, and they relayed to him all these words.13En Dawid het vir sy manne gesê: “Gord elkeen sy swaard aan!” And David said to his men, “Strap on your swords!” So David and all his men strapped on their swords, and about four hundred men followed David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.
Meanwhile, one of Nabal’s young men informed Nabal’s wife Abigail, “Look, David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our master, but he screamed at them.15En die manne was baie goed vir ons, en ons is nie beskaam nie, en ons het niks vermis nie, al die dae wat ons saam met hulle rondgegaan het toe ons in die veld was. Yet these men were very good to us. When we were in the field, we were not harassed, and nothing of ours went missing the whole time we lived among them.16Hulle was 'n muur vir ons, ook snags en ook bedags, al die dae wat ons by hulle was as herders van die skape. They were a wall around us, both day and night, the whole time we were herding our sheep near them.17En nou, weet en kyk wat jy moet doen, want onheil is teen ons heer en teen sy hele huis beslote; en hy is 'n nikswaardige man, sodat 'n mens nie met hom kan praat nie.”aLetterlik: hy is 'n seun van nikswaardigheid. Now consider carefully what you must do, because disaster looms over our master and all his household. For he is such a scoundrel that nobody can speak to him!”
Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five butchered sheep, five seahs of roasted grain, a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs. She loaded them on donkeys19En sy het vir haar jongmanne gesê: “Gaan voor my uit; kyk, ek kom agter julle aan.” וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לִנְעָרֶ֨יהָ֙ עִבְר֣וּ לְפָנַ֔י הִנְנִ֖י אַחֲרֵיכֶ֣ם בָּאָ֑ה וּלְאִישָׁ֥הּ נָבָ֖ל לֹ֥א הִגִּֽידָה׃and said to her young men, “Go ahead of me. I will be right behind you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.20En dit het gebeur terwyl sy op die esel gery het en in die skuiling van die berg afgekom het, kyk, toe kom Dawid en sy manne af haar tegemoet, en sy het hulle ontmoet. As Abigail came riding her donkey into a mountain ravine, she saw David and his men coming down toward her, and she met them.21En Dawid het gesê: “Tevergeefs het ek alles wat aan hierdie man behoort in die woestyn bewaak, en niks van alles wat aan hom behoort het weggeraak nie; en hy het my kwaad vir goed vergeld. Now David had just said, “In vain I have protected all that belonged to this man in the wilderness. Nothing that belongs to him has gone missing, yet he has paid me back evil for good.22So mag God aan die vyande van Dawid doen, en so daarby voeg, as ek van alles wat aan hom behoort tot die môre een laat oorbly wat teen die muur water maak.”aSommige ou vertalings lees: aan Dawid. May God punish David, and ever so severely, if I let one male belonging to Nabal survive until morning.”
When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the donkey, fell facedown, and bowed before him.24En sy het by sy voete geval en gesê: “Op my, my heer, rus die ongeregtigheid. She fell at his feet and said, “My lord, may the blame be on me alone, but please let your servant speak to you; hear the words of your servant.25Laat my heer tog nie sy hart rig op hierdie man van Belial, op Nabal nie, want soos sy naam is, so is hy: Nabal is sy naam, en dwaasheid is by hom. My lord should pay no attention to this scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.26En nou, my heer, so waar as die HERE leef en so waar as u siel leef: die HERE het u verhinder om in bloedskuld te kom en uself met u eie hand te red. Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, since the LORD has held you back from bloodshed and from avenging yourself with your own hand, may your enemies and those who seek harm for my lord be like Nabal.27En nou, hierdie seën wat u slavin vir my heer gebring het, laat dit gegee word aan die jongmanne wat in die voetspore van my heer loop.aLetterlik: wat aan die voete van my heer loop. Now let this gift your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow you.28Vergewe tog die oortreding van u diensmeisie, want die HERE sal sekerlik vir my heer 'n betroubare huis maak, omdat my heer die oorloë van die HERE voer, en kwaad sal in u nie gevind word nie, al u dae lank. Please forgive your servant’s offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s battles. En wanneer die HERE aan my heer goed doen, onthou dan u diensmeisie.”וְלֹ֣א תִהְיֶ֣ה זֹ֣את׀ לְךָ֡ לְפוּקָה֩ וּלְמִכְשׁ֨וֹל לֵ֜ב לַאדֹנִ֗י וְלִשְׁפָּךְ־דָּם֙ חִנָּ֔ם וּלְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ אֲדֹנִ֖י ל֑וֹ וְהֵיטִ֤ב יְהוָה֙ לַֽאדֹנִ֔י וְזָכַרְתָּ֖ אֶת־אֲמָתֶֽךָ׃ סthen my lord will have no remorse or guilt of conscience over needless bloodshed and revenge. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, may you remember your servant.”
Then David said to Abigail, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you to meet me this day!33En geseënd is jou oordeel, en geseënd is jy wat my vandag teruggehou het om in bloed te kom en dat my eie hand vir my red. Blessed is your discernment, and blessed are you, because today you kept me from bloodshed and from avenging myself by my own hand.34Maar so waar as die HERE, die God van Israel, leef, wat my verhinder het om jou kwaad aan te doen: as jy nie gou gemaak en my tegemoet gekom het nie, dan sou daar vir Nabal tot die morelig nie een oorgebly het wat teen die muur water maak nie.” Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”35En Dawid het uit haar hand geneem wat sy vir hom gebring het, en vir haar gesê: “Gaan in vrede op na jou huis. Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him, and he said to her, “Go home in peace. See, I have heeded your voice and granted your request.”
When Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was in the house, holding a feast fit for a king, in high spirits and very drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.37En in die môre, toe die wyn uit Nabal uit was, het sy vrou hom hierdie dinge vertel; en sy hart het in sy binneste gesterf, en hy het soos 'n steen geword. In the morning when Nabal was sober, his wife told him about these events, and his heart failed within him, and he became like a stone.38En ná omtrent tien dae het die HERE Nabal getref, en hy het gesterf. About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal dead.
On hearing that Nabal was dead, David said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has upheld my cause against the reproach of Nabal and has restrained His servant from evil. For the LORD has brought the wickedness of Nabal down upon his own head.” Then David sent word to Abigail, asking her to become his wife.40En die dienaars van Dawid het by Abigail in Karmel gekom en met haar gepraat en gesê: “Dawid het ons na u gestuur om u vir hom as vrou te neem.” When his servants came to Abigail at Carmel, they said, “David has sent us to take you as his wife.”41En sy het opgestaan en met die aangesig na die grond gebuig en gesê: “Kyk, u dienares is 'n slavin om die voete van die dienaars van my heer te was.” She arose, bowed facedown, and said, “Here is your servant, ready to serve and to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.”42En Abigail het gou gemaak en opgestaan en op die donkie gery, met haar vyf diensmeisies wat agter haar aan geloop het; en sy het die boodskappers van Dawid gevolg en sy vrou geword. So Abigail hurried and got on a donkey, and attended by five of her maidens, she followed David’s messengers and became his wife.
David had also married Ahinoam of Jezreel. So she and Abigail were both his wives.44En Saul het sy dogter Mikal, Dawid se vrou, aan Palti, die seun van Lais, wat van Gallim was, gegee. But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Palti son of Laish, who was from Gallim.
