After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod,2En die Filistyne het die ark van God geneem en dit in die huis van Dagon gebring en dit langs Dagon neergesit.וַיִּקְח֤וּ פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ אֶת־אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ אֹת֖וֹ בֵּ֣ית דָּג֑וֹן וַיַּצִּ֥יגוּ אֹת֖וֹ אֵ֥צֶל דָּגֽוֹן׃carried it into the temple of Dagon, and set it beside his statue.3En toe die Asdodiete die volgende dag vroeg opstaan, kyk, Dagon het op sy gesig op die grond geval voor die ark van die HERE. When the people of Ashdod got up early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and returned him to his place.4Toe hulle die volgende dag in die oggend vroeg opstaan, kyk, Dagon was voor sy aangesig na die grond toe geval, voor die ark van die HERE; en Dagon se kop en sy twee handpalms was afgekap op die drumpel. Net Dagon het op hom oorgebly. But when they got up early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD, with his head and his hands broken off and lying on the threshold. Only the torso remained.5Daarom trap die priesters van Dagon en almal wat in die huis van Dagon ingaan nie op die drumpel van Dagon in Asdod nie, tot op hierdie dag. That is why, to this day, the priests of Dagon and all who enter the temple of Dagon in Ashdod do not step on the threshold.
Now the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity, ravaging them and afflicting them with tumors.7En toe die manne van Asdod sien dat dit so is, het hulle gesê: “Die ark van die God van Israel mag nie by ons bly nie, want Sy hand is hard op ons en op Dagon, ons god.” And when the men of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not stay here with us, because His hand is heavy upon us and upon our god Dagon.”8Hulle het gestuur en al die vorste van die Filistyne by hulle bymekaargemaak en gesê: “Wat moet ons doen met die ark van die God van Israel?” So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” “It must be moved to Gath,” they replied. So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.
But after they had moved the ark to Gath, the LORD’s hand was also against that city, throwing it into great confusion and afflicting the men of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.10Toe het hulle die ark van God na Ekron gestuur. En toe die ark van God by Ekron aankom, het die Ekroniete uitgeroep en gesê: “Hulle het die ark van die God van Israel na my toe laat rondgaan om my en my volk dood te maak!” So they sent the ark of God to Ekron, but as it arrived, the Ekronites cried out, “They have brought us the ark of the God of Israel in order to kill us and our people!”11Toe het hulle gestuur en al die vorste van die Filistyne bymekaargemaak en gesê: “Stuur die ark van die God van Israel weg, dat dit terugkeer na sy plek en my en my volk nie doodmaak nie.” Then the Ekronites called together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had pervaded the city; the hand of God was very heavy upon it.12En die manne wat nie gesterf het nie, is geslaan, en die noodkreet van die stad het opgegaan na die hemel. Those who did not die were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
