Now Sarah lived to be 127 years old.2En Sara het gesterf in Kirjat-Arba, dit is Hebron, in die land Kanaän; en Abraham het gekom om oor Sara te rou en haar te beween. She died in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went out to mourn and to weep for her.
Then Abraham got up from beside his dead wife and said to the Hittites,4“Ek is 'n vreemdeling en 'n bywoner by julle; gee my 'n grafbesitting by julle, dat ek my oorledene van voor my af kan begrawe.”גֵּר־וְתוֹשָׁ֥ב אָנֹכִ֖י עִמָּכֶ֑ם תְּנ֨וּ לִ֤י אֲחֻזַּת־קֶ֨בֶר֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה מֵתִ֖י מִלְּפָנָֽי׃“I am a foreigner and an outsider among you. Give me a burial site among you so that I can bury my dead.”5En die seuns van Het het Abraham geantwoord en vir hom gesê:וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ בְנֵי־חֵ֛ת אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֥ר לֽוֹ׃The Hittites replied to Abraham,6“Luister na ons, my heer: 'n Vors van God is u in ons midde. You are God’s chosen one among us. Bury your dead in the finest of our tombs. None of us will withhold his tomb for burying your dead.”7En Abraham het opgestaan en hom neergebuig voor die volk van die land, voor die seuns van Het. Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites.8Hy het met hulle gepraat en gesê: “As dit julle wil is dat ek my dooie uit my oë weg begrawe, luister na my en tree vir my in by Efron, die seun van Sohar,aLetterlik: As dit by julle siel is.וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אִתָּ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר אִם־יֵ֣שׁ אֶֽת־נַפְשְׁכֶ֗ם לִקְבֹּ֤ר אֶת־מֵתִי֙ מִלְּפָנַ֔י שְׁמָע֕וּנִי וּפִגְעוּ־לִ֖י בְּעֶפְר֥וֹן בֶּן־צֹֽחַר׃“If you are willing for me to bury my dead,” he said to them, “listen to me, and approach Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf9sodat hy aan my die spelonk van Makpela gee wat aan hom behoort, wat aan die einde van sy veld is. וְיִתֶּן־לִ֗י אֶת־מְעָרַ֤ת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר בִּקְצֵ֣ה שָׂדֵ֑הוּ בְּכֶ֨סֶף מָלֵ֜א יִתְּנֶ֥נָּה לִ֛י בְּתוֹכְכֶ֖ם לַאֲחֻזַּת־קָֽבֶר׃to sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me in your presence for full price, so that I may have a burial site.”10En Efron het onder die seuns van Het gesit; en Efron, die Hetiet, het Abraham geantwoord ten aanhore van die seuns van Het, van almal wat by die poort van sy stad ingaan, en gesê:aLetterlik: in die ore van die seuns van Het. Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth. So in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city, Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham,11“Nee, my heer, hoor my: die veld gee ek aan u, en die grot wat daarin is, gee ek aan u; voor die oë van die seuns van my volk gee ek dit aan u. Begrawe u oorledene.” Listen to me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land13En hy het met Efron gepraat ten aanhore van die volk van die land en gesê: “Maar as u my tog net wil hoor: ek gee die geld vir die veld; neem dit van my aan, dat ek my oorledene daar kan begrawe.”וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל־עֶפְר֜וֹן בְּאָזְנֵ֤י עַם־הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַ֛ךְ אִם־אַתָּ֥ה ל֖וּ שְׁמָעֵ֑נִי נָתַ֜תִּי כֶּ֤סֶף הַשָּׂדֶה֙ קַ֣ח מִמֶּ֔נִּי וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה אֶת־מֵתִ֖י שָֽׁמָּה׃and said to Ephron in their presence, “If you will please listen to me, I will pay you the price of the field. Accept it from me, so that I may bury my dead there.”14En Efron het Abraham geantwoord en vir hom gesê:וַיַּ֧עַן עֶפְר֛וֹן אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֥ר לֽוֹ׃Ephron answered Abraham,15“My heer, hoor my: 'n stuk grond van 400 sikkels silwer, wat is dit tussen my en u? Begrawe dan u oorledene.”aOngeveer 4,5 kilogram silwer.אֲדֹנִ֣י שְׁמָעֵ֔נִי אֶרֶץ֩ אַרְבַּ֨ע מֵאֹ֧ת שֶֽׁקֶל־כֶּ֛סֶף בֵּינִ֥י וּבֵֽינְךָ֖ מַה־הִ֑וא וְאֶת־מֵתְךָ֖ קְבֹֽר׃“Listen to me, my lord. The land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between you and me? Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the standard of the merchants.
17So het die veld van Efron wat in Makpela is, wat voor Mamre is, die veld en die spelonk wat daarin is, en al die bome wat in die veld is, wat binne sy hele grens rondom is, vasgestaanוַיָּ֣קָם׀ שְׂדֵ֣ה עֶפְר֗וֹן אֲשֶׁר֙ בַּמַּכְפֵּלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר לִפְנֵ֣י מַמְרֵ֑א הַשָּׂדֶה֙ וְהַמְּעָרָ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־בּ֔וֹ וְכָל־הָעֵץ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּכָל־גְּבֻל֖וֹ סָבִֽיב׃So Ephron’s field at Machpelah near Mamre, the cave that was in it, and all the trees within the boundaries of the field were deeded over18na Abraham as 'n aankoop, voor die oë van die seuns van Het, voor almal wat by die poort van sy stad ingaan.לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם לְמִקְנָ֖ה לְעֵינֵ֣י בְנֵי־חֵ֑ת בְּכֹ֖ל בָּאֵ֥י שַֽׁעַר־עִירֽוֹ׃to Abraham’s possession in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city.
After this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field at Machpelah near Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.20So het die veld en die spelonk wat daarin is, vir Abraham vasgestaan as besitting vir 'n graf, van die seuns van Het af. So the field and its cave were deeded by the Hittites to Abraham as a burial site.
