Now when the people saw that Moses was delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him!”2Aäron sê vir hulle: “Trek die goue ringe af wat in die ore van julle vroue, julle seuns en julle dogters is, en bring dit na my toe.” So Aaron told them, “Take off the gold earrings that are on your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.”3Toe het die hele volk die goue ringe afgetrek wat in hulle ore was, en dit na Aäron gebring. Then all the people took off their gold earrings and brought them to Aaron.4Hy het dit uit hulle hand geneem, dit met 'n graveerpen gevorm en daarvan 'n gegote kalf gemaak. He took the gold from their hands, and with an engraving tool he fashioned it into a molten calf. And they said, “These, O Israel, are your gods, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”5Toe Aäron dit sien, het hy 'n altaar voor hom gebou. Aäron het uitgeroep en gesê: “More is daar 'n fees vir die HERE.”aOf: voor dit (die kalf). When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before the calf and proclaimed: “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.”6Die volgende dag het hulle vroeg opgestaan en brandoffers geoffer en vredeoffers gebring, en die volk het gaan sit om te eet en te drink, en hulle het opgestaan om te speel. So the next day they arose, offered burnt offerings, and presented peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go down at once, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves.8Hulle het gou afgewyk van die weg wat Ek hulle beveel het. How quickly they have turned aside from the way that I commanded them! They have made for themselves a molten calf and have bowed down to it. They have sacrificed to it and said, ‘These, O Israel, are your gods, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’”9Die HERE het vir Moses gesê: “Ek het hierdie volk gesien, en kyk, dit is 'n hardnekkige volk.”aLetterlik: 'n volk hard van nek. The LORD also said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and they are indeed a stiff-necked people.10En nou, laat My begaan, dat My toorn teen hulle ontvlam en Ek hulle verteer; en Ek sal jou tot 'n groot nasie maak.” Now leave Me alone, so that My anger may burn against them and consume them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”11Maar Moses het die HERE, sy God, gunstig probeer stem en gesê: “Waarom, HERE, ontbrand U toorn teen U volk wat U uit die land Egipte uitgelei het met groot krag en 'n sterk hand?aLetterlik: het Moses die aangesig van die HERE, sy God, versag. But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God, saying, “O LORD, why does Your anger burn against Your people, whom You brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?12Waarom moet die Egiptenaars sê: ‘Tot onheil het Hy hulle uitgelei, om hulle in die berge dood te maak en hulle van die aangesig van die aarde af uit te roei’? Why should the Egyptians declare, ‘He brought them out with evil intent, to kill them in the mountains and wipe them from the face of the earth’? 15Moses het hom omgedraai en van die berg afgegaan, met die twee tablette van die getuienis in sy hand, tablette wat aan hulle twee kante geskrywe was; van hierdie kant en van daardie kant was hulle geskrywe. Then Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back.16En die tafels was die werk van God, en die skrif was die skrif van God, gegraveer op die tafels. The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.17Toe Josua die geluid van die volk hoor terwyl hulle skreeu, sê hy vir Moses: “Daar is 'n geluid van oorlog in die kamp.” When Joshua heard the sound of the people shouting, he said to Moses, “The sound of war is in the camp.”18Hy het gesê: “Dit is nie die geluid van 'n oorwinningskreet nie, en dit is nie die geluid van 'n nederlaagskreet nie; die geluid van wisselsang is wat ek hoor.”aLetterlik: Nie die geluid van antwoord van mag nie, en nie die geluid van antwoord van swakheid nie; die geluid van antwoord is wat ek hoor. But Moses replied: “It is neither the cry of victory nor the cry of defeat; I hear the sound of singing!”19En toe hy naby die kamp kom en die kalf en die danse sien, het Moses se toorn ontvlam, en hy het die tafels neergegooi en hulle onder aan die berg stukkend gebreek. As Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, he burned with anger and threw the tablets out of his hands, shattering them at the base of the mountain.20Hy het die kalf wat hulle gemaak het, geneem, dit in die vuur verbrand en gemaal totdat dit fyn was, dit oor die oppervlak van die water gestrooi en die Israeliete laat drink. Then he took the calf they had made, burned it in the fire, ground it to powder, and scattered the powder over the face of the water. Then he forced the Israelites to drink it.
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֔ן מֶֽה־עָשָׂ֥ה לְךָ֖ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה כִּֽי־הֵבֵ֥אתָ עָלָ֖יו חֲטָאָ֥ה גְדֹלָֽה׃“What did this people do to you,” Moses asked Aaron, “that you have led them into so great a sin?”22Aäron sê: “Laat die toorn van my heer nie ontbrand nie. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אַהֲרֹ֔ן אַל־יִ֥חַר אַ֖ף אֲדֹנִ֑י אַתָּה֙ יָדַ֣עְתָּ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם כִּ֥י בְרָ֖ע הֽוּא׃“Do not be enraged, my lord,” Aaron replied. “You yourself know that the people are intent on evil.23Hulle het vir my gesê: ‘Maak vir ons gode wat voor ons uit sal gaan, want hierdie Moses, die man wat ons uit die land Egipte laat optrek het, ons weet nie wat van hom geword het nie.’ They told me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. And when I threw it into the fire, out came this calf!”
Moses saw that the people were out of control, for Aaron had let them run wild and become a laughingstock to their enemies.26Toe het Moses in die poort van die kamp gaan staan en gesê: “Wie is vir die HERE? He told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each of you men is to fasten his sword to his side, go back and forth through the camp from gate to gate, and slay his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’”28Die seuns van Levi het volgens die woord van Moses gedoen, en op daardie dag het omtrent 3 000 man van die volk geval. The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people fell dead.29Moses het gesê: “Wy julle vandag aan die HERE toe, want elkeen was teen sy seun en teen sy broer, en om vandag 'n seën op julle te gee.”aLetterlik: Vul vandag julle hand vir die HERE. Afterward, Moses said, “Today you have been ordained for service to the LORD, since each man went against his son and his brother; so the LORD has bestowed a blessing on you this day.”
The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. Now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”31Toe het Moses na die HERE teruggekeer en gesê: “Ag, hierdie volk het 'n groot sonde begaan en vir hulle gode van goud gemaak. So Moses returned to the LORD and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed!
