En dit is die verordeninge wat jy voor hulle moet lê:וְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר תָּשִׂ֖ים לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃“These are the ordinances that you are to set before them:
Wanneer jy ’n Hebreeuse slaaf koop, moet hy ses jaar dien, en in die sewende moet hy as vrye uitgaan, verniet. If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free without paying anything.3As hy alleen gekom het, moet hy alleen uitgaan; as hy die man van ’n vrou is, moet sy vrou saam met hom uitgaan.aLetterlik: met sy liggaam. If he arrived alone, he is to leave alone; if he arrived with a wife, she is to leave with him.4As sy heer vir hom 'n vrou gee en sy baar vir hom seuns of dogters, moet die vrou en haar kinders aan haar heer behoort, en hy moet alleen uitgaan. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.5Maar as die slaaf uitdruklik sê: “Ek het my heer lief, my vrou en my seuns; ek sal nie as vrye uitgaan nie,”וְאִם־אָמֹ֤ר יֹאמַר֙ הָעֶ֔בֶד אָהַ֨בְתִּי֙ אֶת־אֲדֹנִ֔י אֶת־אִשְׁתִּ֖י וְאֶת־בָּנָ֑י לֹ֥א אֵצֵ֖א חָפְשִֽׁי׃But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children; I do not want to go free,’6dan moet sy heer hom na God bring, en hom na die deur of na die deurpos bring, en sy heer moet sy oor met 'n els deurboor, en hy moet hom vir altyd dien.aOf: na die regters.וְהִגִּישׁ֤וֹ אֲדֹנָיו֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְהִגִּישׁוֹ֙ אֶל־הַדֶּ֔לֶת א֖וֹ אֶל־הַמְּזוּזָ֑ה וְרָצַ֨ע אֲדֹנָ֤יו אֶת־אָזְנוֹ֙ בַּמַּרְצֵ֔עַ וַעֲבָד֖וֹ לְעֹלָֽם׃ סthen his master is to bring him before the judges. And he shall take him to the door or doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he shall serve his master for life.
And if a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as the menservants do.8As sy in die oë van haar heer wat haar vir hom bestem het, sleg is, dan moet hy toelaat dat sy losgekoop word; hy het nie die mag om haar aan ’n vreemde volk te verkoop nie, omdat hy troueloos teenoor haar gehandel het.aSommige manuskripte lees: wat haar nie bestem het nie. If she is displeasing in the eyes of her master who had designated her for himself, he must allow her to be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, since he has broken faith with her.9En as hy haar vir sy seun bestem, moet hy volgens die reg van die dogters met haar handel. And if he chooses her for his son, he must deal with her as with a daughter.10As hy vir hom 'n ander een neem, mag hy haar voedsel, haar klere en haar huweliksreg nie verminder nie.aLetterlik: haar vleis.bOf: haar onderdak. If he takes another wife, he must not reduce the food, clothing, or marital rights of his first wife.11En as hy hierdie drie dinge nie vir haar doen nie, moet sy verniet uitgaan, sonder geld. If, however, he does not provide her with these three things, she is free to go without monetary payment.
Wie iemand slaan sodat hy sterf, moet beslis gedood word. Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death.13Maar as hy nie op die loer gelê het nie, en God het hom in sy hand laat kom, dan sal Ek vir jou 'n plek aanwys waarheen hy kan vlug. If, however, he did not lie in wait, but God allowed it to happen, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee.
En as iemand vermetel teen sy naaste optree om hom met lis dood te maak, moet jy hom van by My altaar af wegneem om te sterf. But if a man schemes and acts willfully against his neighbor to kill him, you must take him away from My altar to be put to death.
Whoever strikes his father or mother must surely be put to death.16En hy wat ’n man steel en hom verkoop, en hy word in sy hand gevind, moet sekerlik gedood word. Whoever kidnaps another man must be put to death, whether he sells him or the man is found in his possession.17En hy wat sy vader en sy moeder vervloek, moet sekerlik gedood word. Anyone who curses his father or mother must surely be put to death.
If men are quarreling and one strikes the other with a stone or a fist, and he does not die but is confined to bed,19en as hy opstaan en buite rondloop op sy staf, dan is hy wat geslaan het, onskuldig; net sy stilsit moet hy vergoed, en hy moet hom sekerlik laat genees.אִם־יָק֞וּם וְהִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ בַּח֛וּץ עַל־מִשְׁעַנְתּ֖וֹ וְנִקָּ֣ה הַמַּכֶּ֑ה רַ֥ק שִׁבְתּ֛וֹ יִתֵּ֖ן וְרַפֹּ֥א יְרַפֵּֽא׃ סthen the one who struck him shall go unpunished, as long as the other can get up and walk around outside with his staff. Nevertheless, he must compensate the man for his lost work and see that he is completely healed.
En as ’n man sy slaaf of sy slavin met die staf slaan, en hy sterf onder sy hand, moet dit sekerlik gewreek word. If a man strikes his manservant or maidservant with a rod, and the servant dies by his hand, he shall surely be punished.21Maar as hy 'n dag of twee dae bly lewe, moet dit nie gewreek word nie, want hy is sy geld.aLetterlik: bly staan. However, if the servant gets up after a day or two, the owner shall not be punished, since the servant is his property.
If men who are fighting strike a pregnant woman and her child is born prematurely, but there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband demands and as the court allows.23Maar as daar onheil is, moet jy lewe vir lewe gee:וְאִם־אָס֖וֹן יִהְיֶ֑ה וְנָתַתָּ֥ה נֶ֖פֶשׁ תַּ֥חַת נָֽפֶשׁ׃But if a serious injury results, then you must require a life for a life—24oog vir oog, tand vir tand, hand vir hand, voet vir voet,עַ֚יִן תַּ֣חַת עַ֔יִן שֵׁ֖ן תַּ֣חַת שֵׁ֑ן יָ֚ד תַּ֣חַת יָ֔ד רֶ֖גֶל תַּ֥חַת רָֽגֶל׃eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,25brandwond vir brandwond, wond vir wond, striem vir striem.כְּוִיָּה֙ תַּ֣חַת כְּוִיָּ֔ה פֶּ֖צַע תַּ֣חַת פָּ֑צַע חַבּוּרָ֕ה תַּ֖חַת חַבּוּרָֽה׃ סburn for burn, wound for wound, and stripe for stripe.
If a man strikes and blinds the eye of his manservant or maidservant, he must let the servant go free as compensation for the eye.
And if he knocks out the tooth of his manservant or maidservant, he must let the servant go free as compensation for the tooth.
If an ox gores a man or woman to death, the ox must surely be stoned, and its meat must not be eaten. But the owner of the ox shall not be held responsible.29Maar as die os van gister en eergister af stoterig was, en sy eienaar is gewaarsku en hy het hom nie bewaak nie, en hy maak ’n man of ’n vrou dood, moet die os gestenig word, en sy eienaar moet ook gedood word. But if the ox has a habit of goring, and its owner has been warned yet does not restrain it, and it kills a man or woman, then the ox must be stoned and its owner must also be put to death.30As soengeld aan hom opgelê word, moet hy die loskoopprys vir sy lewe gee, volgens alles wat aan hom opgelê word. If payment is demanded of him instead, he may redeem his life by paying the full amount demanded of him.31Of dit 'n seun stoot of 'n dogter stoot, volgens hierdie verordening moet met hom gehandel word. If the ox gores a son or a daughter, it shall be done to him according to the same rule.32As die bees 'n slaaf of 'n slavin stoot, moet hy aan sy heer 30 sikkels silwer gee, en die bees moet gestenig word.aOngeveer 340 gram silwer. If the ox gores a manservant or maidservant, the owner must pay thirty shekels of silver to the master of that servant, and the ox must be stoned.
En as iemand 'n put oopmaak, of as iemand 'n put grawe en dit nie toemaak nie, en 'n bees of 'n donkie val daarin,וְכִֽי־יִפְתַּ֨ח אִ֜ישׁ בּ֗וֹר א֠וֹ כִּֽי־יִכְרֶ֥ה אִ֛ישׁ בֹּ֖ר וְלֹ֣א יְכַסֶּ֑נּוּ וְנָֽפַל־שָׁ֥מָּה שּׁ֖וֹר א֥וֹ חֲמֽוֹר׃If a man opens or digs a pit and fails to cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it,34moet die eienaar van die put vergoed; hy moet geld aan sy eienaar teruggee, en die dooie sal syne wees.בַּ֤עַל הַבּוֹר֙ יְשַׁלֵּ֔ם כֶּ֖סֶף יָשִׁ֣יב לִבְעָלָ֑יו וְהַמֵּ֖ת יִֽהְיֶה־לּֽוֹ׃ סthe owner of the pit shall make restitution; he must pay its owner, and the dead animal will be his.
If a man’s ox injures his neighbor’s ox and it dies, they must sell the live one and divide the proceeds; they also must divide the dead animal.36Of as dit bekend was dat dit ’n stoterige os was van gister en eergister af, en sy eienaar het hom nie bewaak nie, moet hy sekerlik vergoed, os vir os, en die dooie sal syne wees. But if it was known that the ox had a habit of goring, yet its owner failed to restrain it, he shall pay full compensation, ox for ox, and the dead animal will be his.
