1En die HERE het met Moses gespreek in die vlaktes van Moab, by die Jordaan van Jerigo, en gesê:וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֖ה בְּעַֽרְבֹ֣ת מוֹאָ֑ב עַל־יַרְדֵּ֥ן יְרֵח֖וֹ לֵאמֹֽר׃Again the LORD spoke to Moses on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho: 2“Gee bevel aan die Israeliete dat hulle uit die erfdeel van hul besitting stede aan die Leviete gee om in te woon; en weiveld rondom die stede moet julle aan die Leviete gee.צַו֮ אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וְנָתְנ֣וּ לַלְוִיִּ֗ם מִֽנַּחֲלַ֛ת אֲחֻזָּתָ֖ם עָרִ֣ים לָשָׁ֑בֶת וּמִגְרָ֗שׁ לֶֽעָרִים֙ סְבִיבֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם תִּתְּנ֖וּ לַלְוִיִּֽם׃“Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance they will possess, cities for the Levites to live in and pasturelands around the cities. 3En die stede moet vir hulle wees om in te woon, en hul weivelde moet wees vir hul vee en vir hul goed en vir al hul diere.וְהָי֧וּ הֶֽעָרִ֛ים לָהֶ֖ם לָשָׁ֑בֶת וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֗ם יִהְי֤וּ לִבְהֶמְתָּם֙ וְלִרְכֻשָׁ֔ם וּלְכֹ֖ל חַיָּתָֽם׃The cities will be for them to live in, and the pasturelands will be for their herds, their flocks, and all their other livestock. 4En die weivelde van die stede wat julle aan die Leviete gee, moet van die muur van die stad af na buite 1 000 el rondom wees.

וּמִגְרְשֵׁי֙ הֶֽעָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּתְּנ֖וּ לַלְוִיִּ֑ם מִקִּ֤יר הָעִיר֙ וָח֔וּצָה אֶ֥לֶף אַמָּ֖ה סָבִֽיב׃The pasturelands around the cities you are to give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits from the wall on every side. 5En julle moet buite die stad meet: die oostekant 2 000 el, en die suidekant 2 000 el, en die westekant 2 000 el, en die noordekant 2 000 el, met die stad in die middel. These areas will serve as larger pasturelands for the cities. 6En die stede wat julle aan die Leviete gee, is die ses toevlugstede wat julle moet gee sodat die doodslaner daarheen kan vlug; en daarby moet julle 42 stede gee.וְאֵ֣ת הֶֽעָרִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר תִּתְּנוּ֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֵ֚ת שֵׁשׁ־עָרֵ֣י הַמִּקְלָ֔ט אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּתְּנ֔וּ לָנֻ֥ס שָׁ֖מָּה הָרֹצֵ֑חַ וַעֲלֵיהֶ֣ם תִּתְּנ֔וּ אַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּשְׁתַּ֖יִם עִֽיר׃Six of the cities you give the Levites are to be appointed as cities of refuge, to which a manslayer may flee. In addition to these, give the Levites forty-two other cities. 7Al die stede wat julle aan die Leviete gee, is 48 stede, hulle en hulle weivelde.כָּל־הֶעָרִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר תִּתְּנוּ֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם אַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה עִ֑יר אֶתְהֶ֖ן וְאֶת־מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃The total number of cities you give the Levites will be forty-eight, with their corresponding pasturelands. 8En wat die stede betref wat julle gee uit die besitting van die Israeliete: van die baie moet julle vermeerder, en van die min moet julle verminder; elkeen moet volgens sy erfdeel wat hulle sal erf, van sy stede aan die Leviete gee.וְהֶֽעָרִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר תִּתְּנוּ֙ מֵאֲחֻזַּ֣ת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מֵאֵ֤ת הָרַב֙ תַּרְבּ֔וּ וּמֵאֵ֥ת הַמְעַ֖ט תַּמְעִ֑יטוּ אִ֗ישׁ כְּפִ֤י נַחֲלָתוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִנְחָ֔לוּ יִתֵּ֥ן מֵעָרָ֖יו לַלְוִיִּֽם׃ פThe cities that you apportion from the territory of the Israelites should be given to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: more from a larger tribe and less from a smaller one.”

9En die HERE het met Moses gespreek en gesê:וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃Then the LORD said to Moses, 10“Spreek met die Israeliete en sê vir hulle: ‘Wanneer julle oor die Jordaan trek na die land Kanaän,דַּבֵּר֙ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ אֲלֵהֶ֑ם כִּ֥י אַתֶּ֛ם עֹבְרִ֥ים אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן אַ֥רְצָה כְּנָֽעַן׃“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 11dan moet julle vir julle stede aanwys; toevluktstede moet dit vir julle wees, en 'n doodslaner wat 'n persoon per ongeluk doodgeslaan het, kan daarheen vlug.

וְהִקְרִיתֶ֤ם לָכֶם֙ עָרִ֔ים עָרֵ֥י מִקְלָ֖ט תִּהְיֶ֣ינָה לָכֶ֑ם וְנָ֥ס שָׁ֨מָּה֙ רֹצֵ֔חַ מַכֵּה־נֶ֖פֶשׁ בִּשְׁגָגָֽה׃designate cities to serve as your cities of refuge, so that a person who kills someone unintentionally may flee there. 12En die stede moet vir julle 'n toevlug wees teen die losser van die bloed, sodat die doodslaner nie sterf voordat hy voor die vergadering vir die oordeel gestaan het nie.וְהָי֨וּ לָכֶ֧ם הֶעָרִ֛ים לְמִקְלָ֖ט מִגֹּאֵ֑ל וְלֹ֤א יָמוּת֙ הָרֹצֵ֔חַ עַד־עָמְד֛וֹ לִפְנֵ֥י הָעֵדָ֖ה לַמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃You are to have these cities as a refuge from the avenger, so that the manslayer will not die until he stands trial before the assembly. 13En die stede wat julle gee, moet vir julle ses toevlugstede wees.וְהֶעָרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּתֵּ֑נוּ שֵׁשׁ־עָרֵ֥י מִקְלָ֖ט תִּהְיֶ֥ינָה לָכֶֽם׃The cities you select will be your six cities of refuge. 14Drie van die stede moet julle oorkant die Jordaan gee, en drie van die stede moet julle in die land Kanaän gee; toevlugstede moet dit wees.אֵ֣ת׀ שְׁלֹ֣שׁ הֶעָרִ֗ים תִּתְּנוּ֙ מֵעֵ֣בֶר לַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וְאֵת֙ שְׁלֹ֣שׁ הֶֽעָרִ֔ים תִּתְּנ֖וּ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן עָרֵ֥י מִקְלָ֖ט תִּהְיֶֽינָה׃Select three cities across the Jordan and three in the land of Canaan as cities of refuge. 15Vir die Israeliete en vir die vreemdeling en vir die bywoner onder hulle moet hierdie ses stede 'n toevlug wees, sodat elkeen wat 'n persoon per ongeluk doodslaan, daarheen kan vlug.לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וְלַגֵּ֤ר וְלַתּוֹשָׁב֙ בְּתוֹכָ֔ם תִּהְיֶ֛ינָה שֵׁשׁ־הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה לְמִקְלָ֑ט לָנ֣וּס שָׁ֔מָּה כָּל־מַכֵּה־נֶ֖פֶשׁ בִּשְׁגָגָֽה׃These six cities will serve as a refuge for the Israelites and for the foreigner or stranger among them, so that anyone who kills a person unintentionally may flee there.

16Maar as hy hom met ’n voorwerp van yster geslaan het sodat hy gesterf het, is hy ’n doodslaner; die doodslaner moet sekerlik gedood word.וְאִם־בִּכְלִ֨י בַרְזֶ֧ל׀ הִכָּ֛הוּ וַיָּמֹ֖ת רֹצֵ֣חַֽ ה֑וּא מ֥וֹת יוּמַ֖ת הָרֹצֵֽחַ׃If, however, anyone strikes a person with an iron object and kills him, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death. 17En as hy hom met ’n steen in die hand waardeur ’n mens kan sterf, geslaan het sodat hy gesterf het, is hy ’n doodslaner; die doodslaner moet sekerlik gedood word.וְאִ֡ם בְּאֶ֣בֶן יָד֩ אֲשֶׁר־יָמ֨וּת בָּ֥הּ הִכָּ֛הוּ וַיָּמֹ֖ת רֹצֵ֣חַֽ ה֑וּא מ֥וֹת יוּמַ֖ת הָרֹצֵֽחַ׃Or if anyone has in his hand a stone of deadly size, and he strikes and kills another, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death. 18Of as hy hom met ’n houtvoorwerp in die hand waardeur ’n mens kan sterf, geslaan het sodat hy gesterf het, is hy ’n doodslaner; die doodslaner moet sekerlik gedood word.א֡וֹ בִּכְלִ֣י עֵֽץ־יָד֩ אֲשֶׁר־יָמ֨וּת בּ֥וֹ הִכָּ֛הוּ וַיָּמֹ֖ת רֹצֵ֣חַֽ ה֑וּא מ֥וֹת יוּמַ֖ת הָרֹצֵֽחַ׃If anyone has in his hand a deadly object of wood, and he strikes and kills another, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death. 19Die losser van die bloed self moet die doodslaner doodmaak; wanneer hy hom teëkom, moet hy self hom doodmaak.גֹּאֵ֣ל הַדָּ֔ם ה֥וּא יָמִ֖ית אֶת־הָרֹצֵ֑חַ בְּפִגְעוֹ־ב֖וֹ ה֥וּא יְמִיתֶֽנּוּ׃The avenger of blood is to put the murderer to death; when he finds him, he is to kill him. 20En as hy hom uit haat stoot, of uit 'n hinderlaag iets op hom gooi, en hy sterf,וְאִם־בְּשִׂנְאָ֖ה יֶהְדָּפֶ֑נּוּ אֽוֹ־הִשְׁלִ֥יךְ עָלָ֛יו בִּצְדִיָּ֖ה וַיָּמֹֽת׃Likewise, if anyone maliciously pushes another or intentionally throws an object at him and kills him, 21of uit vyandskap hom met sy hand slaan, en hy sterf, moet hy wat geslaan het, sekerlik gedood word; hy is 'n doodslaner. Die losser van die bloed moet die doodslaner doodmaak wanneer hy hom teëkom.א֣וֹ בְאֵיבָ֞ה הִכָּ֤הוּ בְיָדוֹ֙ וַיָּמֹ֔ת מֽוֹת־יוּמַ֥ת הַמַּכֶּ֖ה רֹצֵ֣חַֽ ה֑וּא גֹּאֵ֣ל הַדָּ֗ם יָמִ֛ית אֶת־הָרֹצֵ֖חַ בְּפִגְעוֹ־בֽוֹ׃or if in hostility he strikes him with his hand and he dies, the one who struck him must surely be put to death; he is a murderer. When the avenger of blood finds the murderer, he is to kill him. 22Maar as hy hom skielik, sonder vyandskap, stoot, of enige voorwerp sonder hinderlaag op hom gooi,וְאִם־בְּפֶ֥תַע בְּלֹא־אֵיבָ֖ה הֲדָפ֑וֹ אוֹ־הִשְׁלִ֥יךְ עָלָ֛יו כָּל־כְּלִ֖י בְּלֹ֥א צְדִיָּֽה׃But if anyone pushes a person suddenly, without hostility, or throws an object at him unintentionally, 23of met enige steen waardeur ’n mens kan sterf, sonder om te sien, dit op hom laat val het sodat hy gesterf het, terwyl hy nie sy vyand was en nie sy onheil gesoek het nie,א֣וֹ בְכָל־אֶ֜בֶן אֲשֶׁר־יָמ֥וּת בָּהּ֙ בְּלֹ֣א רְא֔וֹת וַיַּפֵּ֥ל עָלָ֖יו וַיָּמֹ֑ת וְהוּא֙ לֹא־אוֹיֵ֣ב ל֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ רָעָתֽוֹ׃or without looking drops a heavy stone that kills him, but he was not an enemy and did not intend to harm him, 24dan moet die vergadering tussen hom wat geslaan het en die losser van die bloed oordeel volgens hierdie verordeninge.וְשָֽׁפְטוּ֙ הָֽעֵדָ֔ה בֵּ֚ין הַמַּכֶּ֔ה וּבֵ֖ין גֹּאֵ֣ל הַדָּ֑ם עַ֥ל הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃then the congregation must judge between the slayer and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances. 25En die vergadering moet die doodslaner red uit die hand van die losser van die bloed, en die vergadering moet hom terugbring na sy toevluktstad waarheen hy gevlug het; en hy moet daarin woon tot die dood van die hoëpriester wat met die heilige olie gesalf is.וְהִצִּ֨ילוּ הָעֵדָ֜ה אֶת־הָרֹצֵ֗חַ מִיַּד֮ גֹּאֵ֣ל הַדָּם֒ וְהֵשִׁ֤יבוּ אֹתוֹ֙ הָֽעֵדָ֔ה אֶל־עִ֥יר מִקְלָט֖וֹ אֲשֶׁר־נָ֣ס שָׁ֑מָּה וְיָ֣שַׁב בָּ֗הּ עַד־מוֹת֙ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן הַגָּדֹ֔ל אֲשֶׁר־מָשַׁ֥ח אֹת֖וֹ בְּשֶׁ֥מֶן הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃The assembly is to protect the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood. Then the assembly will return him to the city of refuge to which he fled, and he must live there until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil. 26Maar as die doodslaner beslis buite die grens van sy toevluktstad uitgaan, waarheen hy gevlug het,וְאִם־יָצֹ֥א יֵצֵ֖א הָרֹצֵ֑חַ אֶת־גְּבוּל֙ עִ֣יר מִקְלָט֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָנ֖וּס שָֽׁמָּה׃But if the manslayer ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which he fled 27en die losser van die bloed vind hom buite die grens van sy toevluktstad, en die losser van die bloed slaan die doodslaner dood, is daar vir hom geen bloedskuld nie.

Letterlik: is daar vir hom geen bloed nie.

וּמָצָ֤א אֹתוֹ֙ גֹּאֵ֣ל הַדָּ֔ם מִח֕וּץ לִגְב֖וּל עִ֣יר מִקְלָט֑וֹ וְרָצַ֞ח גֹּאֵ֤ל הַדָּם֙ אֶת־הָ֣רֹצֵ֔חַ אֵ֥ין ל֖וֹ דָּֽם׃and the avenger of blood finds him outside of his city of refuge and kills him, then the avenger will not be guilty of bloodshed, 28Want in sy toevluktstad moet hy bly tot die dood van die hoëpriester; en ná die dood van die hoëpriester mag die doodslaner terugkeer na die land van sy besitting.כִּ֣י בְעִ֤יר מִקְלָטוֹ֙ יֵשֵׁ֔ב עַד־מ֖וֹת הַכֹּהֵ֣ן הַגָּדֹ֑ל וְאַחֲרֵ֥י מוֹת֙ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן הַגָּדֹ֔ל יָשׁוּב֙ הָרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶל־אֶ֖רֶץ אֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃because the manslayer must remain in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may he return to the land he owns. 29En dit moet vir julle 'n insetting van reg wees vir julle geslagte, in al julle woonplekke.וְהָי֨וּ אֵ֧לֶּה לָכֶ֛ם לְחֻקַּ֥ת מִשְׁפָּ֖ט לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶ֑ם בְּכֹ֖ל מוֹשְׁבֹתֵיכֶֽם׃This will be a statutory ordinance for you for the generations to come, wherever you live. 30Elkeen wat ’n mens doodslaan: op die getuienis van getuies moet die doodslaner doodgeslaan word; maar een getuie mag nie teen iemand getuig sodat hy sterf nie.

כָּל־מַ֨כֵּה־נֶ֔פֶשׁ לְפִ֣י עֵדִ֔ים יִרְצַ֖ח אֶת־הָרֹצֵ֑חַ וְעֵ֣ד אֶחָ֔ד לֹא־יַעֲנֶ֥ה בְנֶ֖פֶשׁ לָמֽוּת׃If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death on the testimony of the witnesses. But no one is to be put to death based on the testimony of a lone witness. 31En julle mag geen losprys aanneem vir die lewe van ’n doodslaner wat skuldig is om te sterf nie, want hy moet sekerlik gedood word.וְלֹֽא־תִקְח֥וּ כֹ֨פֶר֙ לְנֶ֣פֶשׁ רֹצֵ֔חַ אֲשֶׁר־ה֥וּא רָשָׁ֖ע לָמ֑וּת כִּי־מ֖וֹת יוּמָֽת׃You are not to accept a ransom for the life of a murderer who deserves to die; he must surely be put to death. 32En julle mag geen losprys neem vir hom wat na sy toevluktstad gevlug het, om terug te keer en in die land te woon tot die dood van die priester nie.וְלֹא־תִקְח֣וּ כֹ֔פֶר לָנ֖וּס אֶל־עִ֣יר מִקְלָט֑וֹ לָשׁוּב֙ לָשֶׁ֣בֶת בָּאָ֔רֶץ עַד־מ֖וֹת הַכֹּהֵֽן׃Nor should you accept a ransom for the person who flees to a city of refuge and allow him to return and live on his own land before the death of the high priest. 33En julle mag die land waarin julle is, nie besoedel nie; want die bloed, dit besoedel die land, en vir die land kan geen versoening gedoen word vir die bloed wat daarin uitgestort is nie, behalwe deur die bloed van die een wat dit uitgestort het.וְלֹֽא־תַחֲנִ֣יפוּ אֶת־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתֶּם֙ בָּ֔הּ כִּ֣י הַדָּ֔ם ה֥וּא יַחֲנִ֖יף אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְלָאָ֣רֶץ לֹֽא־יְכֻפַּ֗ר לַדָּם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שֻׁפַּךְ־בָּ֔הּ כִּי־אִ֖ם בְּדַ֥ם שֹׁפְכֽוֹ׃Do not pollute the land where you live, for bloodshed pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for the land on which the blood is shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it. 34En jy mag die land waarin julle woon, waarin Ek woon, nie verontreinig nie; want Ek, die HERE, woon onder die Israeliete.’ ”וְלֹ֧א תְטַמֵּ֣א אֶת־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתֶּם֙ יֹשְׁבִ֣ים בָּ֔הּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲנִ֖י שֹׁכֵ֣ן בְּתוֹכָ֑הּ כִּ֚י אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה שֹׁכֵ֕ן בְּת֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ פDo not defile the land where you live and where I dwell. For I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites.”
