Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He stirred up David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.”2Die koning het vir Joab, die owerste van die leër wat by hom was, gesê: “Trek tog rond deur al die stamme van Israel, van Dan af tot by Berseba, en neem die volk op, sodat ek die getal van die volk kan weet.” So the king said to Joab the commander of his army, who was with him, “Go now throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their number.”3Joab het vir die koning gesê: “Mag die HERE u God by die volk byvoeg, soos hulle is en nog eens soos hulle is, honderdmaal, terwyl die oë van my heer die koning dit sien. But Joab replied to the king, “May the LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army departed from the presence of the king to register the troops of Israel.5Hulle het die Jordaan oorgesteek en by Aroër laer opgeslaan, regs van die stad wat in die middel van die dal van Gad lê, en na Jaser toe.aSommige ou vertalings lees: en hulle het by Aroër begin en by die stad in die middel van die dal, na Gad en na Jaser toe. They crossed the Jordan and camped near Aroer, south of the town in the middle of the valley, and proceeded toward Gad and Jazer.6Hulle het in Gilead gekom en in die land van Tagtim-Hodsi, en hulle het in Dan-Jaän gekom en rondom na Sidon toe.aHebreeus onduidelik. Then they went to Gilead and the land of Tahtim-hodshi, and on to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon.7Hulle het by die vesting van Tirus gekom en by al die stede van die Hewiete en die Kanaäniete, en hulle het uitgegaan na die Negev van Juda, na Berseba. They went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to the Negev of Judah, to Beersheba.8So het hulle die hele land deurgetrek en aan die einde van nege maande en 20 dae in Jerusalem aangekom. At the end of nine months and twenty days, having gone through the whole land, they returned to Jerusalem.9Joab het die getal van die opname van die volk aan die koning gegee: in Israel was daar 800 000 manne van krag wat die swaard trek, en die man van Juda was 500 000 man. And Joab reported to the king the total number of the troops. In Israel there were 800,000 men of valor who drew the sword, and in Judah there were 500,000.
After David had numbered the troops, his conscience was stricken and he said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”
11Toe Dawid in die môre opstaan, het die woord van die HERE tot die profeet Gad, Dawid se siener, gekom en gesê:וַיָּ֥קָם דָּוִ֖ד בַּבֹּ֑קֶר פ וּדְבַר־יְהוָ֗ה הָיָה֙ אֶל־גָּ֣ד הַנָּבִ֔יא חֹזֵ֥ה דָוִ֖ד לֵאמֹֽר׃When David got up in the morning, the word of the LORD had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer:12“Gaan en spreek met Dawid: ‘So sê die HERE: Drie dinge hou Ek jou voor; kies vir jou een daarvan, dat Ek dit aan jou doen.’”aLetterlik: Drie lê Ek op jou.הָל֞וֹךְ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ אֶל־דָּוִ֗ד כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שָׁלֹ֕שׁ אָנֹכִ֖י נוֹטֵ֣ל עָלֶ֑יךָ בְּחַר־לְךָ֥ אַֽחַת־מֵהֶ֖ם וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לָּֽךְ׃“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”13Gad het by Dawid gekom en dit aan hom meegedeel en vir hom gesê: “Sal daar sewe jaar hongersnood in jou land oor jou kom? Of drie dae pes in jou land? So Gad went and said to David, “Do you choose to endure three years of famine in your land, three months of fleeing the pursuit of your enemies, or three days of plague upon your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”14Dawid het vir Gad gesê: “Ek is baie benoud. David answered Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
15Toe het die HERE pes in Israel gestuur, van die oggend af tot by die vasgestelde tyd; en daar het van die volk gesterf, van Dan af tot by Berseba, 70 000 man. So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel from that morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died.16Toe die engel sy hand na Jerusalem uitstrek om dit te verwoes, het die HERE berou gehad oor die onheil, en Hy het vir die engel wat onder die volk verwoes, gesê: “Dit is genoeg! Laat nou jou hand sak.” Die engel van die HERE was by die dorsvloer van die Jebusiet.aLetterlik: het die HERE Hom laat troos oor die onheil. But when the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.17Dawid het vir die HERE gesê, toe hy die engel sien wat onder die volk slaan, ja, hy het gesê: “Kyk, ek het gesondig, en ek het verkeerd gedoen. Maar hierdie skape, wat het hulle gedoen? Laat U hand tog teen my wees en teen die huis van my vader.” When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “Surely I, the shepherd, have sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”
18Gad het op daardie dag by Dawid gekom en vir hom gesê: “Gaan op, rig vir die HERE 'n altaar op by die dorsvloer van die Jebusiet.” And that day Gad came to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”19Dawid het opgegaan volgens die woord van Gad, soos die HERE beveel het. So David went up at the word of Gad, just as the LORD had commanded.
When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, he went out and bowed facedown before the king.21Arawna het gesê: “Waarom het my heer die koning na sy dienaar toe gekom?” וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲרַ֔וְנָה מַדּ֛וּעַ בָּ֥א אֲדֹנִֽי־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־עַבְדּ֑וֹ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד לִקְנ֧וֹת מֵעִמְּךָ֣ אֶת־הַגֹּ֗רֶן לִבְנ֤וֹת מִזְבֵּ֨חַ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה וְתֵעָצַ֥ר הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה מֵעַ֥ל הָעָֽם׃“Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” Araunah said. “To buy your threshing floor,” David replied, “that I may build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague upon the people may be halted.”22Arawna het vir Dawid gesê: “Laat my heer die koning neem en opoffer wat goed is. Araunah said to David, “May my lord the king take whatever seems good to him and offer it up. Here are the oxen for a burnt offering and the threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.23Alles het Arawna, die koning, aan die koning gegee. O king, Araunah gives all these to the king.” He also said to the king, “May the LORD your God accept you.”24Die koning het vir Arawna gesê: “Nee, maar ek sal dit sekerlik van jou koop teen 'n prys; ek sal nie vir die HERE my God brandoffers opoffer wat verniet is nie.” וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶל־אֲרַ֗וְנָה לֹ֚א כִּֽי־קָנ֨וֹ אֶקְנֶ֤ה מֵאֽוֹתְךָ֙ בִּמְחִ֔יר וְלֹ֧א אַעֲלֶ֛ה לַיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהַ֖י עֹל֣וֹת חִנָּ֑ם וַיִּ֨קֶן דָּוִ֤ד אֶת־הַגֹּ֨רֶן֙ וְאֶת־הַבָּקָ֔ר בְּכֶ֖סֶף שְׁקָלִ֥ים חֲמִשִּֽׁים׃“No,” replied the king, “I insist on paying a price, for I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.25Dawid het daar vir die HERE 'n altaar gebou en brandoffers en vredeoffers gebring; en die HERE het Hom oor die land laat verbid, en die plaag is van Israel af gestuit. And there he built an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the LORD answered the prayers on behalf of the land, and the plague upon Israel was halted.
