Some time later, Absalom provided for himself a chariot with horses and fifty men to run ahead of him.2En Absalom het vroeg opgestaan en langs die pad na die poort gaan staan. He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out and ask, “What city are you from?” And if he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,”3En Absalom het vir hom gesê: “Kyk, jou sake is goed en reg, maar daar is niemand van die koning se kant wat na jou luister nie.” Absalom would say, “Look, your claims are good and right, but the king has no deputy to hear you.”4En Absalom het gesê: “Wie sal my rigter in die land aanstel? And he would add, “If only someone would appoint me judge in the land, then everyone with a grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would give him justice.”5En wanneer iemand nader gekom het om voor hom neer te buig, het hy sy hand uitgesteek en hom vasgegryp en hom gesoen. Also, when anyone approached to bow down to him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him, and kiss him.6En Absalom het op hierdie wyse gedoen aan die hele Israel wat na die koning gekom het vir oordeel, en Absalom het die hart van die manne van Israel gesteel. Absalom did this to all the Israelites who came to the king for justice. In this way he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
After four years had passed, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go to Hebron to fulfill a vow I have made to the LORD.8Want u dienaar het ’n gelofte gedoen toe ek in Gesur in Aram gewoon het, en gesê: ‘As die HERE my na Jerusalem terugbring, dan sal ek die HERE dien.’” For your servant made a vow while dwelling in Geshur of Aram, saying: ‘If indeed the LORD brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in Hebron.’ וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ל֥וֹ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לֵ֣ךְ בְּשָׁל֑וֹם וַיָּ֖קָם וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ חֶבְרֽוֹנָה׃ פ“Go in peace,” said the king. So Absalom got up and went to Hebron.
Then Absalom sent spies throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: “When you hear the sound of the horn, you are to say, ‘Absalom reigns in Hebron!’”11En saam met Absalom het 200 man uit Jerusalem gegaan, genooi, en hulle het in hulle opregtheid gegaan, en hulle het van niks geweet nie. Two hundred men from Jerusalem accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and they went along innocently, for they knew nothing about the matter.12En Absalom het Agitofel die Giloniet, Dawid se raadgewer, uit sy stad, uit Gilo, laat haal terwyl hy die slagoffers geoffer het. While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, to come from his hometown of Giloh. So the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept increasing.
Then a messenger came to David and reported, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.”14En Dawid het vir al sy dienaars wat saam met hom in Jerusalem was, gesê: “Staan op en laat ons vlug, want daar sal vir ons geen ontkoming wees voor Absalom nie. And David said to all the servants with him in Jerusalem, “Arise and let us flee, or we will not escape from Absalom! We must leave quickly, or he will soon overtake us, heap disaster on us, and put the city to the sword.”15En die koning se dienaars het vir die koning gesê: “Volgens alles wat my heer die koning kies — kyk, ons is u dienaars.” The king’s servants replied, “Whatever our lord the king decides, we are your servants.”16En die koning het uitgetrek met sy hele huis te voet, en die koning het tien vroue, byvroue, agtergelaat om die huis te bewaar. Then the king set out, and his entire household followed him. But he left behind ten concubines to take care of the palace.17En die koning het uitgetrek met die hele volk te voet, en hulle het by die laaste huis gaan staan.aOf: by Bet-Hammerhak. So the king set out with all the people following him. He stopped at the last house,18En al sy dienaars het by hom verbygegaan, en al die Keretiete en al die Peletiete, en al die Gittiete, 600 man wat te voet uit Gat saam met hom gekom het, het voor die koning verbygegaan.וְכָל־עֲבָדָיו֙ עֹבְרִ֣ים עַל־יָד֔וֹ וְכָל־הַכְּרֵתִ֖י וְכָל־הַפְּלֵתִ֑י וְכָֽל־הַגִּתִּ֞ים שֵׁשׁ־מֵא֣וֹת אִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֤אוּ בְרַגְלוֹ֙ מִגַּ֔ת עֹבְרִ֖ים עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃and all his servants marched past him—all the Cherethites and Pelethites, and six hundred Gittites who had followed him from Gath.
Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why should you also go with us? Go back and stay with the new king, since you are both a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.20Gister was jou koms, en vandag moet ek jou saam met ons laat gaan, terwyl ek gaan waarheen ek gaan? In fact, you arrived only yesterday; should I make you wander around with us today while I do not know where I am going? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness. ”21En Ittai het die koning geantwoord en gesê: “So waar die HERE leef, en so waar my heer die koning leef, juis op die plek waar my heer die koning sal wees, hetsy tot die dood, hetsy tot die lewe, daar sal u dienaar wees.” But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be!”22En Dawid het vir Ittai gesê: “Gaan en trek verby.” וַיֹּ֧אמֶר דָּוִ֛ד אֶל־אִתַּ֖י לֵ֣ךְ וַעֲבֹ֑ר וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֞ר אִתַּ֤י הַגִּתִּי֙ וְכָל־אֲנָשָׁ֔יו וְכָל־הַטַּ֖ף אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתּֽוֹ׃“March on then,” said David to Ittai. So Ittai the Gittite marched past with all his men and all the little ones who were with him.23En die hele land het met ’n groot stem gehuil, en die hele volk het verbygetrek; en die koning het by die spruit Kidron verbygegaan, en die hele volk het verbygetrek in die rigting van die pad na die woestyn. Everyone in the countryside was weeping loudly as all the people passed by. And as the king crossed the Kidron Valley, all the people also passed toward the way of the wilderness.24En kyk, ook Sadok en al die Leviete saam met hom het die ark van die verbond van God gedra; en hulle het die ark van God neergesit, en Abjatar het opgegaan totdat die hele volk klaar was om uit die stad te trek. Zadok was also there, and all the Levites with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people had passed out of the city.25En die koning het vir Sadok gesê: “Bring die ark van God terug na die stad. As ek guns vind in die oë van die HERE, sal Hy my terugbring en my dit en sy woonplek laat sien.aOf: Hom en Sy woonplek. Then the king said to Zadok, “Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the LORD, He will bring me back and let me see both it and His dwelling place again.26Maar as Hy so sê: ‘Ek het geen behae in jou nie’ — kyk, hier is ek, laat Hy met my doen soos dit goed is in Sy oë.” But if He should say, ‘I do not delight in you,’ then here I am; let Him do to me whatever seems good to Him.”
The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a seer? His head was covered, and he was walking barefoot. And all the people with him covered their heads and went up, weeping as they went.31En aan Dawid is vertel: “Agitofel is onder die samesweerders saam met Absalom.” Now someone told David: “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David pleaded, “O LORD, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness!”
When David came to the summit, where he used to worship God, Hushai the Archite was there to meet him with his robe torn and dust on his head.33En Dawid het vir hom gesê: “As jy saam met my oorgaan, dan sal jy vir my ’n las wees. David said to him, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me.34Maar as jy na die stad terugkeer en vir Absalom sê: ‘U dienaar sal ek wees, o koning; u vader se dienaar was ek vroeër, en nou is ek u dienaar’ — dan sal jy vir my die raad van Agitofel verydel. But you can thwart the counsel of Ahithophel for me if you return to the city and say to Absalom: ‘I will be your servant, my king; in the past I was your father’s servant, but now I will be your servant.’35En is Sadok en Abjatar, die priesters, nie daar by jou nie?
