Now Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.2En Isebel het ’n boodskapper na Elia gestuur om te sê: “So mag die gode doen en so nog daarby voeg, want môre om hierdie tyd sal ek jou lewe maak soos die lewe van een van hulle.”aOf: So mag God doen en so nog daarby voeg. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “May the gods deal with me, and ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I have not made your life like the lives of those you killed!”
And Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,4Maar hy self het ’n dagreis ver die woestyn in gegaan, en hy het gekom en onder ’n besembos gaan sit; en hy het gevra dat hy mag sterf en gesê: “Dit is genoeg! Neem nou my lewe, HERE, want ek is nie beter as my vaders nie.”aLetterlik: hy het sy siel gevra om te sterf.וְהֽוּא־הָלַ֤ךְ בַּמִּדְבָּר֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ י֔וֹם וַיָּבֹ֕א וַיֵּ֕שֶׁב תַּ֖חַת רֹ֣תֶם וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ֙ לָמ֔וּת וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ רַ֗ב עַתָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ קַ֣ח נַפְשִׁ֔י כִּֽי־לֹא־ט֥וֹב אָנֹכִ֖י מֵאֲבֹתָֽי׃while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”5En hy het gaan lê en onder ’n besembos aan die slaap geraak; en kyk, daar raak ’n engel hom aan en sê vir hom: “Staan op, eet!” Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”6En hy het gekyk, en kyk, by sy kop was ’n koek op warm klippe en ’n kruik water; en hy het geëet en gedrink en weer gaan lê. And he looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again.7En die Engel van die HERE het ’n tweede keer teruggekom en hom aangeraak en gesê: “Staan op, eet, want die pad is vir jou te veel.” A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”8En hy het opgestaan en geëet en gedrink, en in die krag van daardie ete het hy 40 dae en 40 nagte geloop tot by die berg van God, Horeb. So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
There Elijah entered a cave and spent the night. וַיֹּאמֶר֩ קַנֹּ֨א קִנֵּ֜אתִי לַיהוָ֣ה׀ אֱלֹהֵ֣י צְבָא֗וֹת כִּֽי־עָזְב֤וּ בְרִֽיתְךָ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־מִזְבְּחֹתֶ֣יךָ הָרָ֔סוּ וְאֶת־נְבִיאֶ֖יךָ הָרְג֣וּ בֶחָ֑רֶב וָֽאִוָּתֵ֤ר אֲנִי֙ לְבַדִּ֔י וַיְבַקְשׁ֥וּ אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֖י לְקַחְתָּֽהּ׃“I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”11Toe sê Hy: “Gaan uit en staan op die berg voor die aangesig van die HERE.” Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.” And a great and mighty wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.12En ná die aardbewing vuur; die HERE was nie in die vuur nie. After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”14Hy het gesê: “Ek het met ywer geywer vir die HERE, die God van die leërskare, want die Israeliete het U verbond verlaat, U altare afgebreek en U profete met die swaard doodgemaak. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
Then the LORD said to him, “Go back by the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to anoint Hazael as king over Aram.16En Jehu, die seun van Nimsi, moet jy salf tot koning oor Israel; en Elisa, die seun van Safat, van Abel-Mehola, moet jy salf tot profeet in jou plek. You are also to anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel and Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah to succeed you as prophet.17En dit sal gebeur: wie van die swaard van Hasael ontkom, hom sal Jehu doodmaak; en wie van die swaard van Jehu ontkom, hom sal Elisa doodmaak. Then Jehu will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Jehu.18En Ek sal in Israel 7 000 laat oorbly, al die knieë wat nie voor Baäl gebuig het nie, en elke mond wat hom nie gesoen het nie.”aOf: Ek het in Israel 7 000 laat oorbly. Nevertheless, I have reserved seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”
So Elijah departed and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve teams of oxen, and he was with the twelfth team. Elijah passed by him and threw his cloak around him.20En hy het die osse verlaat en agter Elia aan gehardloop en gesê: “Laat my tog my vader en my moeder soen, dan sal ek agter jou aan gaan.” So Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will follow you.” So Elisha turned back from him, took his pair of oxen, and slaughtered them. Using the oxen’s equipment for fuel, he cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow and serve Elijah.
