After a long time, in the third year of the drought, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the face of the earth.”2Toe het Elia gegaan om hom aan Agab te vertoon. En die hongersnood was swaar in Samaria. So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. וַיִּקְרָ֣א אַחְאָ֔ב אֶל־עֹבַדְיָ֖הוּ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־הַבָּ֑יִת וְעֹבַדְיָ֗הוּ הָיָ֥ה יָרֵ֛א אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה מְאֹֽד׃and Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Now Obadiah greatly feared the LORD,4En toe Isebel die profete van die HERE uitgeroei het, het Obadja 100 profete geneem en hulle, 50 man in 'n grot, weggesteek en hulle met brood en water onderhou.וַיְהִי֙ בְּהַכְרִ֣ית אִיזֶ֔בֶל אֵ֖ת נְבִיאֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּקַּ֨ח עֹבַדְיָ֜הוּ מֵאָ֣ה נְבִאִ֗ים וַֽיַּחְבִּיאֵ֞ם חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אִישׁ֙ בַּמְּעָרָ֔ה וְכִלְכְּלָ֖ם לֶ֥חֶם וָמָֽיִם׃for when Jezebel had slaughtered the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty men per cave, providing them with food and water.)5Agab het vir Obadja gesê: “Gaan deur die land na al die waterfonteine en na al die spruite. Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go throughout the land to every spring and every valley. Perhaps we will find grass to keep the horses and mules alive so that we will not have to destroy any livestock.”6En hulle het die land onder hulle verdeel om daardeur te trek: Agab het alleen op een pad gegaan, en Obadja het alleen op 'n ander pad gegaan. So they divided the land to explore. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went the other way by himself.
Now as Obadiah went on his way, Elijah suddenly met him. When Obadiah recognized him, he fell facedown and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”8En hy het vir hom gesê: “Ek is dit. Gaan sê vir jou heer: ‘Hier is Elia.’”וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ אָ֑נִי לֵ֛ךְ אֱמֹ֥ר לַאדֹנֶ֖יךָ הִנֵּ֥ה אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃“It is I,” he answered. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here!’”9En hy het gesê: “Wat het ek gesondig, dat u u dienaar in die hand van Agab gee om my dood te maak? But Obadiah replied, “How have I sinned, that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to put me to death?10So waar as die HERE u God leef, daar is geen nasie of koninkryk waarheen my heer nie gestuur het om u te soek nie; en as hulle gesê het: ‘Hy is nie hier nie,’ het hy die koninkryk en die nasie laat sweer dat hulle u nie gevind het nie. As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent someone to search for you. En u dienaar vrees die HERE van my jeug af. I do not know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.13Is dit nie aan my heer vertel wat ek gedoen het toe Isebel die profete van die HERE doodgemaak het nie, dat ek van die profete van die HERE 100 man weggesteek het, telkens 50 man in 'n grot, en hulle met brood en water onderhou het? Was it not reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel slaughtered the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred prophets of the LORD, fifty men per cave, and I provided them with food and water.14En nou sê u: ‘Gaan sê vir jou heer: Hier is Elia.’ Dan sal hy my doodmaak.” And now you say, ‘Go tell your lord that Elijah is here!’ He will kill me!”15En Elia het gesê: “So waar as die HERE van die leërskare leef, voor wie ek staan, ek sal my vandag sekerlik aan hom vertoon.” Then Elijah said, “As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will present myself to Ahab today.”
So Obadiah went to inform Ahab, who went to meet Elijah.17Toe Agab Elia sien, het Agab vir hom gesê: “Is dit jy, Israel se moeilikheidmaker?”aLetterlik: ontroerder van Israel. When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?”18En hy het gesê: “Ek het Israel nie in die ellende gestort nie, maar jy en jou vader se huis, deurdat julle die gebooie van die HERE verlaat het en jy agter die Baäls aan gegaan het.וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֹ֤א עָכַ֨רְתִּי֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּ֥י אִם־אַתָּ֖ה וּבֵ֣ית אָבִ֑יךָ בַּֽעֲזָבְכֶם֙ אֶת־מִצְוֺ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ אַחֲרֵ֥י הַבְּעָלִֽים׃“I have not troubled Israel,” Elijah replied, “but you and your father’s house have, for you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals.19En nou, stuur, versamel die hele Israel by my op die berg Karmel, en ook die 450 profete van Baäl en die 400 profete van Asjera, wat aan Isebel se tafel eet.” Now summon all Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel, along with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.21Elia het nader gegaan na die hele volk en gesê: “Hoe lank hink julle op twee gedagtes? As die HERE God is, volg Hom; en as Baäl, volg hom.” Then Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him. But if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people did not answer a word.22En Elia het vir die volk gesê: “Ek alleen het oorgebly as profeet van die HERE, maar die profete van Baäl is 450 man. Then Elijah said to the people, “I am the only remaining prophet of the LORD, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.23Laat hulle dan vir ons twee bulle gee, en laat hulle vir hulle die een bul kies en dit in stukke sny en op die hout lê, maar nie vuur aanlê nie; en ek sal die ander bul berei en dit op die hout lê, en ek sal nie vuur aanlê nie. Get two bulls for us. And I will prepare the other bull and place it on the wood but not light the fire.24Dan moet julle die naam van julle god aanroep, en ek sal die naam van die HERE aanroep; en die god wat met vuur antwoord, hy is God.” Then you may call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people answered, “What you say is good.”
Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”26Hulle het die jong bul geneem wat hy aan hulle gegee het, en dit gereedgemaak. And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, shouting, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound, and no one answered as they leaped around the altar they had made.27En op die middag het Elia met hulle gespot en gesê: “Roep met 'n harde stem, want hy is 'n god! Want hy is in gepeins, of hy het hom afgesonder, of hy is op pad; miskien slaap hy en moet hy wakker word.” At noon Elijah began to taunt them, saying, “Shout louder, for he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened!”28Hulle het met 'n harde stem geroep en hulleself volgens hul gewoonte met swaarde en spiese opgesny totdat bloed oor hulle uitgestort was. So they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives and lances, as was their custom, until the blood gushed over them.29Toe die middag verby was, het hulle geprofeteer tot die tyd dat die graanoffer opgedra word. Midday passed, and they kept on raving until the time of the evening sacrifice. But there was no response; no one answered, no one paid attention.
Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people approached him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been torn down.31En Elia het twaalf klippe geneem volgens die getal van die stamme van die seuns van Jakob, tot wie die woord van die HERE gekom het en gesê: “Israel sal jou naam wees.” And Elijah took twelve stones, one for each tribe of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come and said, “Israel shall be your name.”32En hy het met die klippe 'n altaar gebou in die naam van die HERE, en hy het 'n sloot gemaak, soos die ruimte vir twee seah saad, rondom die altaar.aLetterlik: soos 'n huis van twee seah saad.bOngeveer vyftien liter. And with the stones, Elijah built an altar in the name of the LORD. Then he dug a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed.33En hy het die hout gerangskik en die bul in stukke gesny en dit op die hout gelê. וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מִלְא֨וּ אַרְבָּעָ֤ה כַדִּים֙ מַ֔יִם וְיִֽצְק֥וּ עַל־הָעֹלָ֖ה וְעַל־הָעֵצִ֑ים וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁנוּ֙ וַיִּשְׁנ֔וּ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר שַׁלֵּ֖שׁוּ וַיְשַׁלֵּֽשׁוּ׃and said, “Fill four waterpots and pour the water on the offering and on the wood.” “Do it a second time,” he said, and they did it a second time. “Do it a third time,” he said, and they did it a third time.35En die water het rondom die altaar geloop, en ook die sloot het hy vol water gemaak. So the water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet approached the altar and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and have done all these things at Your command.37Antwoord my, HERE, antwoord my, sodat hierdie volk kan weet dat U, HERE, God is, en dat U hulle hart teruggedraai het.”עֲנֵ֤נִי יְהוָה֙ עֲנֵ֔נִי וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה כִּֽי־אַתָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְאַתָּ֛ה הֲסִבֹּ֥תָ אֶת־לִבָּ֖ם אֲחֹרַנִּֽית׃Answer me, O LORD! 41En Elia het vir Agab gesê: “Gaan op, eet en drink, want daar is die geluid van die gedruis van die reën.” And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”42En Agab het opgegaan om te eet en te drink. But Elijah climbed to the summit of Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his face between his knees.43Hy sê vir sy seun: “Gaan tog op, kyk in die rigting van die see.” Hy sê: “Gaan terug, sewe keer.”aOf: dienaar.וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶֽל־נַעֲר֗וֹ עֲלֵֽה־נָא֙ הַבֵּ֣ט דֶּֽרֶךְ־יָ֔ם וַיַּ֨עַל֙ וַיַּבֵּ֔ט וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵ֣ין מְא֑וּמָה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שֻׁ֖ב שֶׁ֥בַע פְּעָמִֽים׃“Go and look toward the sea,” he said to his servant. So the servant went and looked, and he said, “There is nothing there.” Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”44En by die sewende keer het hy gesê: “Kyk, 'n klein wolkie soos 'n man se hand kom uit die see op.” On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” And Elijah replied, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”45En intussen het die hemel donker geword van wolke en wind, en daar was 'n groot reën; en Agab het gery en na Jisreël gegaan.aLetterlik: tot so en tot so. Meanwhile, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain began to fall. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel.46En die hand van die HERE was op Elia, en hy het sy lendene omgord en voor Agab uit gehardloop tot by die ingang van Jisreël.aLetterlik: tot jy by Jisreël kom. And the hand of the LORD came upon Elijah, and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
