1En kyk, 'n man van God het uit Juda na Bet-El gekom deur die woord van die HERE, terwyl Jerobeam by die altaar gestaan het om reukoffer te bring. Suddenly, as Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense, there came a man of God from Judah to Bethel by the word of the LORD.2Hy het teen die altaar uitgeroep deur die woord van die HERE en gesê: “Altaar, altaar, so sê die HERE: ‘Kyk, 'n seun word vir die huis van Dawid gebore, Josia is sy naam, en hy sal op jou die priesters van die hoogtes slag wat op jou offerrook laat opgaan, en mensebeendere sal hulle op jou verbrand.’ And he cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD, “O altar, O altar, this is what the LORD says: ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David, and upon you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense upon you, and human bones will be burned upon you.’”3En hy het op daardie dag 'n wonder gegee en gesê: “Dit is die wonder wat die HERE gespreek het: Kyk, die altaar sal skeur, en die as wat daarop is, sal uitgestort word.” That day the man of God gave a sign, saying, “The LORD has spoken this sign: ‘Surely the altar will be split apart, and the ashes upon it will be poured out.’”4Toe die koning die woord van die man van God hoor wat teen die altaar in Bet-El uitgeroep het, het Jerobeam sy hand van die altaar af uitgesteek en gesê: “Gryp hom!” וַיְהִי֩ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־דְּבַ֣ר אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר קָרָ֤א עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֨חַ֙ בְּבֵֽית־אֵ֔ל וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יָרָבְעָ֧ם אֶת־יָד֛וֹ מֵעַ֥ל of God had cried out against it, he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward him withered, so that he could not pull it back.5En die altaar het geskeur en die as is van die altaar uitgestort, volgens die wonder wat die man van God deur die woord van die HERE gegee het.וְהַמִּזְבֵּ֣חַ נִקְרָ֔ע וַיִּשָּׁפֵ֥ךְ הַדֶּ֖שֶׁן מִן־הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ כַּמּוֹפֵ֗ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר koning en sê vir die man van God: “Soek tog die guns van die HERE jou God en bid vir my, sodat my hand na my terugkeer.” God, “Intercede with the LORD your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him as it was before.7Die koning het vir die man van God gesê: “Kom saam met my huis toe en verkwik jou, en ek sal jou 'n geskenk gee.”וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ אֶל־אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים בֹּאָה־אִתִּ֥י הַבַּ֖יְתָה וּֽסְעָ֑דָה וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה bread or drink water in this place.9Want so het Hy my deur die woord van die HERE beveel en gesê: ‘Jy mag nie brood eet en nie water drink nie, en jy mag nie terugkeer met die pad waarlangs jy gegaan het nie.’” For this is what I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’”10En hy het langs 'n ander pad gegaan en nie teruggekeer langs die pad waarmee hy na Bet-El gekom het nie. So the man of God went another way and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.
Now a certain old prophet was living in Bethel, and his sons came and told him all the deeds that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told their father the words that the man had spoken to the king.12En hulle vader het vir hulle gesê: “Watter pad het hy gegaan?” וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר אֲלֵהֶם֙ אֲבִיהֶ֔ם אֵֽי־זֶ֥ה הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ הָלָ֑ךְ וַיִּרְא֣וּ בָנָ֗יו אֶת־הַדֶּ֨רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר הָלַךְ֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֖א מִיהוּדָֽה׃“Which way did he go?” their father asked. And his sons showed him the way taken by the man of God, who had come from Judah.13Toe sê hy vir sy seuns: “Saal vir my die donkie op.” So the prophet said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” Then they saddled the donkey for him, and he mounted it14Hy het agter die man van God aangegaan en hom gekry waar hy onder die terpentynboom sit, en hy het vir hom gesê: “Is jy die man van God wat uit Juda gekom het?” En hy het gesê: “Ek is.”וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיִּ֨מְצָאֵ֔הוּ יֹשֵׁ֖ב תַּ֣חַת הָאֵלָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו הַאַתָּ֧ה אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥אתָ מִֽיהוּדָ֖ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אָֽנִי׃and went after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am,” he replied.15Hy het vir hom gesê: “Kom saam met my huis toe en eet brood.” So the prophet said to the man of God, “Come home with me and eat some bread.”16Maar hy het gesê: “Ek kan nie saam met jou terugkeer en saam met jou ingaan nie, en ek sal op hierdie plek nie brood eet en nie saam met jou water drink nie. But the man replied, “I cannot go home with you, and I will not eat bread or drink water with you in this place.17Want 'n woord het tot my gekom deur die woord van die HERE: ‘Jy mag nie brood eet en nie daar water drink nie; jy mag nie terugkeer om langs die pad te gaan waarmee jy gegaan het nie.’ For I have been told by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”18Toe sê hy vir hom: “Ek is ook 'n profeet soos jy, en 'n engel het met my gespreek deur die woord van die HERE en gesê: ‘Bring hom saam met jou terug na jou huis, dat hy brood kan eet en water kan drink.’ ” Hy het vir hom gelieg. Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,19Hy het toe saam met hom teruggekeer en brood geëet in sy huis en water gedrink.וַיָּ֣שָׁב אִתּ֗וֹ וַיֹּ֥אכַל לֶ֛חֶם בְּבֵית֖וֹ וַיֵּ֥שְׁתְּ מָֽיִם׃but the man of God went back with him, ate bread in his house, and drank water.
20En terwyl hulle aan die tafel sit, het die woord van die HERE tot die profeet gekom wat hom laat terugkeer het,וַיְהִ֕י הֵ֥ם יֹשְׁבִ֖ים אֶל־הַשֻּׁלְחָ֑ן פ וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־הַנָּבִ֖יא אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֱשִׁיבֽוֹ׃While they were sitting at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back,21en hy het na die man van God geroep wat uit Juda gekom het en gesê: “So sê die HERE: ‘Omdat jy teen die mond van die HERE weerspannig was en nie die gebod onderhou het wat die HERE jou God jou beveel het nie,וַיִּקְרָ֞א אֶל־אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֤א מִֽיהוּדָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה יַ֗עַן כִּ֤י מָרִ֨יתָ֙ פִּ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְלֹ֤א שָׁמַ֨רְתָּ֙ אֶת־הַמִּצְוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוְּךָ֖ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃and the prophet cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the commandment that the LORD your God gave you,22maar teruggekeer het en brood geëet en water gedrink het op die plek waarvan Hy met jou gespreek het: ‘Moenie brood eet en moenie water drink nie’ – jou lyk sal nie in die graf van jou vaders kom nie.”וַתָּ֗שָׁב וַתֹּ֤אכַל לֶ֨חֶם֙ וַתֵּ֣שְׁתְּ מַ֔יִם בַּמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר אֵלֶ֔יךָ אַל־תֹּ֥אכַל לֶ֖חֶם וְאַל־תֵּ֣שְׁתְּ מָ֑יִם לֹֽא־תָב֥וֹא נִבְלָתְךָ֖ אֶל־קֶ֥בֶר אֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃but you went back and ate bread and drank water in the place where He told you not to do so, your body shall never reach the tomb of your fathers.’”23En nadat hy brood geëet en nadat hy gedrink het, het hy vir hom die donkie opgesaal, vir die profeet wat hy laat terugkeer het. And after the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the old prophet who had brought him back saddled the donkey for him.24Hy het gegaan, en 'n leeu het hom op die pad gevind en hom gedood. As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying in the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it.25En kyk, manne het verbygegaan en die lyk gesien wat neergegooi op die pad lê, en die leeu wat langs die lyk staan, en hulle het gekom en dit vertel in die stad waarin die ou profeet gewoon het. And there were men passing by who saw the body lying in the road with the lion standing beside it, and they went and reported this in the city where the old prophet lived.26Toe die profeet wat hom van die pad af teruggebring het, dit hoor, het hy gesê: “Dit is die man van God wat teen die mond van die HERE in opstand gekom het. When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard this, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the command of the LORD. וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַיִּמְצָ֤א אֶת־נִבְלָתוֹ֙ מֻשְׁלֶ֣כֶת בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וַֽחֲמוֹר֙ וְהָ֣אַרְיֵ֔ה עֹמְדִ֖ים אֵ֣צֶל הַנְּבֵלָ֑ה לֹֽא־אָכַ֤ל הָֽאַרְיֵה֙ אֶת־הַנְּבֵלָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שָׁבַ֖ר אֶֽת־הַחֲמֽוֹר׃and he went and found the body lying in the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had not eaten the body or mauled the donkey.29Die profeet het die lyk van die man van God opgetel en dit op die donkie gelê en dit teruggebring; en hy het na die stad van die ou profeet gekom om te rou en om hom te begrawe. So the old prophet lifted up the body of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back to his own city to mourn for him and bury him.30Hy het sy lyk in sy graf neergelê, en hulle het oor hom gerou: “Wee, my broer!” Then he laid the body in his own tomb, and they lamented over him, “Oh, my brother!”31Nadat hy hom begrawe het, het hy met sy seuns gespreek en gesê: “As ek sterf, moet julle my begrawe in die graf waarin die man van God begrawe is; lê my beendere langs sy beendere neer. After he had buried him, the prophet said to his sons, “When I die, you must bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried.
