1Terwyl Apollos in Korinte was, het dit gebeur dat Paulus, nadat hy deur die hoërliggende streke gereis het, in Efese aangekom en daar sekere dissipels gevind het.Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ τὸν Ἀπολλῶ εἶναι ἐν Κορίνθῳ Παῦλον διελθόντα τὰ ἀνωτερικὰ μέρη ⸀ἐλθεῖν εἰς Ἔφεσον καὶ ⸀εὑρεῖν τινας μαθητάς,While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the interior and came to Ephesus.
εἶπέν ⸀τε πρὸς αὐτούς· Εἰ πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐλάβετε πιστεύσαντες; οἱ ⸀δὲ πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἀλλʼ οὐδʼ εἰ πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἔστιν ἠκούσαμεν.and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” “No,” they answered, “we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3Toe sê hy: “Waarin is julle dan gedoop?” En hulle sê: “In die doop van Johannes.”εἶπέν ⸀τε· Εἰς τί οὖν ἐβαπτίσθητε; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· Εἰς τὸ Ἰωάννου βάπτισμα.“Into what, then, were you baptized?” Paul asked. “The baptism of John,” they replied. 4Paulus sê: “Johannes het 'n doop van bekering gedoop deur vir die volk te sê dat hulle moes glo in Hom wat ná hom kom, dit is in Jesus.”εἶπεν δὲ Παῦλος· ⸀Ἰωάννης ἐβάπτισεν βάπτισμα μετανοίας, τῷ λαῷ λέγων εἰς τὸν ἐρχόμενον μετʼ αὐτὸν ἵνα πιστεύσωσιν, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν εἰς ⸀τὸν Ἰησοῦν.Paul explained: “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the One coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5Toe hulle dit hoor, is hulle gedoop in die naam van die Here Jesus.ἀκούσαντες δὲ ἐβαπτίσθησαν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ·On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6En toe Paulus hulle die hande opgelê het, het die Heilige Gees op hulle gekom, en hulle het in tale gespreek en geprofeteer.καὶ ἐπιθέντος αὐτοῖς τοῦ ⸀Παύλου χεῖρας ἦλθε τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐπʼ αὐτούς, ἐλάλουν τε γλώσσαις καὶ ἐπροφήτευον.And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7En die manne was altesaam omtrent twaalf.ἦσαν δὲ οἱ πάντες ἄνδρες ὡσεὶ ⸀δώδεκα.There were about twelve men in all.
8Hy het toe in die sinagoge ingegaan en drie maande lank met vrymoedigheid gespreek, terwyl hy geredeneer en oortuig het aangaande die koninkryk van God.Εἰσελθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν ἐπαρρησιάζετο ἐπὶ μῆνας τρεῖς διαλεγόμενος καὶ ⸀πείθων περὶ τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ θεοῦ.Then Paul went into the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. 9Maar toe sommige hulle verhard en ongehoorsaam gebly het en die Weg voor die menigte beswadder het, het hy van hulle weggegaan en die dissipels afgesonder, en daagliks in die skool van Tirannus geredeneer.ὡς δέ τινες ἐσκληρύνοντο καὶ ἠπείθουν κακολογοῦντες τὴν ὁδὸν ἐνώπιον τοῦ πλήθους, ἀποστὰς ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ἀφώρισεν τοὺς μαθητάς, καθʼ ἡμέραν διαλεγόμενος ἐν τῇ σχολῇ ⸀Τυράννου.But when some of them stubbornly refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way, Paul took his disciples and left the synagogue to conduct daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
This continued for two years, so that everyone who lived in the province of Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the word of the Lord.
Δυνάμεις τε οὐ τὰς τυχούσας ⸂ὁ θεὸς ἐποίει⸃ διὰ τῶν χειρῶν Παύλου,God did extraordinary miracles through the hands of Paul,
12sodat selfs sweetdoeke of voorskote van sy lyf af na die siekes gebring is, en die siektes van hulle gewyk het en die bose geeste uitgegaan het.ὥστε καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀσθενοῦντας ⸀ἀποφέρεσθαι ἀπὸ τοῦ χρωτὸς αὐτοῦ σουδάρια ἢ σιμικίνθια καὶ ἀπαλλάσσεσθαι ἀπʼ αὐτῶν τὰς νόσους, τά τε πνεύματα τὰ πονηρὰ ⸀ἐκπορεύεσθαι.so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and the diseases and evil spirits left them. 13Maar sommige van die rondtrekkende Joodse besweerders het ook onderneem om die naam van die Here Jesus uit te spreek oor dié wat die bose geeste gehad het, en gesê: “Ek besweer julle by Jesus wat Paulus verkondig.”ἐπεχείρησαν δέ τινες ⸀καὶ τῶν περιερχομένων Ἰουδαίων ἐξορκιστῶν ὀνομάζειν ἐπὶ τοὺς ἔχοντας τὰ πνεύματα τὰ πονηρὰ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ λέγοντες· ⸀Ὁρκίζω ὑμᾶς τὸν Ἰησοῦν ⸀ὃν Παῦλος κηρύσσει.Now there were some itinerant Jewish exorcists who tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those with evil spirits. They would say, “I command you by Jesus, whom Paul proclaims.” 14En daar was sewe seuns van ’n sekere Skeva, ’n Joodse hoëpriester, wat dit gedoen het.ἦσαν δέ ⸀τινος Σκευᾶ Ἰουδαίου ἀρχιερέως ἑπτὰ ⸀υἱοὶ τοῦτο ποιοῦντες.Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15Maar die bose gees het geantwoord en vir hulle gesê: “Jesus ken ek, en van Paulus weet ek, maar julle, wie is julle?”ἀποκριθὲν δὲ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρὸν εἶπεν ⸀αὐτοῖς· ⸀Τὸν Ἰησοῦν γινώσκω καὶ τὸν Παῦλον ἐπίσταμαι, ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνες ἐστέ;But one day the evil spirit responded, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” 16En die man in wie die bose gees was, het op hulle gespring, albei oorweldig en teen hulle die oorhand gekry, sodat hulle kaal en gewond uit daardie huis gevlug het.καὶ ⸀ἐφαλόμενος ⸂ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς⸃ ἐν ᾧ ἦν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρὸν ⸂κατακυριεύσας ἀμφοτέρων⸃ ἴσχυσεν κατʼ αὐτῶν, ὥστε γυμνοὺς καὶ τετραυματισμένους ἐκφυγεῖν ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου ἐκείνου.Then the man with the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. The attack was so violent that they ran out of the house naked and wounded.
17Dit het aan al die Jode en Grieke wat in Efese woon, bekend geword, en vrees het op hulle almal geval, en die naam van die Here Jesus is groot gemaak.τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο γνωστὸν πᾶσιν Ἰουδαίοις τε καὶ Ἕλλησιν τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν τὴν Ἔφεσον, καὶ ⸀ἐπέπεσεν φόβος ἐπὶ πάντας αὐτούς, καὶ ἐμεγαλύνετο τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ.This became known to all the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, and fear came over all of them. So the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. Many who had believed now came forward, confessing and disclosing their deeds.
And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books and burned them in front of everyone. When the value of the books was calculated, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.
20So het die woord van die Here kragtig gegroei en sterk geword.οὕτως κατὰ κράτος ⸂τοῦ κυρίου ὁ λόγος⸃ ηὔξανεν καὶ ἴσχυεν.So the word of the Lord powerfully continued to spread and prevail.
After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must see Rome as well.”
22En hy het twee van dié wat hom gedien het, Timoteus en Erastus, na Masedonië gestuur, en self ’n tyd lank in Asië gebly.ἀποστείλας δὲ εἰς τὴν Μακεδονίαν δύο τῶν διακονούντων αὐτῷ, Τιμόθεον καὶ Ἔραστον, αὐτὸς ἐπέσχεν χρόνον εἰς τὴν Ἀσίαν.He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed for a time in the province of Asia.
23En in daardie tyd het daar geen geringe opskudding oor die Weg ontstaan nie.Ἐγένετο δὲ κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν ἐκεῖνον τάραχος οὐκ ὀλίγος περὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ.About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. 24Want 'n man met die naam Demetrius, 'n silwersmid, wat silwer tempeltjies van Artemis gemaak het, het vir die ambagsmanne nie min werk verskaf nie,Δημήτριος γάρ τις ὀνόματι, ἀργυροκόπος, ποιῶν ναοὺς ἀργυροῦς Ἀρτέμιδος παρείχετο τοῖς τεχνίταις ⸂οὐκ ὀλίγην ἐργασίαν⸃,It began with a silversmith named Demetrius who made silver shrines of Artemis, bringing much business to the craftsmen. 25en hy het hulle en die werkers in sulke dinge bymekaargeroep en gesê: “Manne, julle weet dat ons welvaart uit hierdie werk kom,οὓς συναθροίσας καὶ τοὺς περὶ τὰ τοιαῦτα ἐργάτας εἶπεν· Ἄνδρες, ἐπίστασθε ὅτι ἐκ ταύτης τῆς ἐργασίας ἡ εὐπορία ⸀ἡμῖν ἐστιν,Demetrius assembled the craftsmen, along with the workmen in related trades. “Men,” he said, “you know that this business is our source of prosperity. 26en julle sien en hoor dat hierdie Paulus nie net in Efese nie, maar byna in die hele Asië 'n groot menigte oorreed en weggelei het deur te sê dat dié wat met hande gemaak word, nie gode is nie.καὶ θεωρεῖτε καὶ ἀκούετε ὅτι οὐ μόνον Ἐφέσου ἀλλὰ σχεδὸν πάσης τῆς Ἀσίας ὁ Παῦλος οὗτος πείσας μετέστησεν ἱκανὸν ὄχλον, λέγων ὅτι οὐκ εἰσὶν θεοὶ οἱ διὰ χειρῶν γινόμενοι.And you can see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in nearly the whole province of Asia, this Paul has persuaded a great number of people to turn away. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all. 27Nie net loop hierdie deel van ons gevaar om in minagting te kom nie, maar ook dat die tempel van die groot godin Artemis as niks beskou sal word nie en dat sy selfs van haar grootheid beroof gaan word, sy wat die hele Asië en die hele bewoonde wêreld aanbid.”οὐ μόνον δὲ τοῦτο κινδυνεύει ἡμῖν τὸ μέρος εἰς ἀπελεγμὸν ἐλθεῖν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸ τῆς μεγάλης θεᾶς ⸂Ἀρτέμιδος ἱερὸν⸃ εἰς οὐθὲν λογισθῆναι, μέλλειν ⸀τε καὶ καθαιρεῖσθαι ⸂τῆς μεγαλειότητος⸃ αὐτῆς, ἣν ὅλη ἡ Ἀσία καὶ ἡ οἰκουμένη σέβεται.There is danger not only that our business will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited and her majesty deposed—she who is worshiped by all the province of Asia and the whole world.”
28Toe hulle dit hoor en vol woede geword het, het hulle uitgeroep en gesê: “Groot is Artemis van die Efesiërs!”Ἀκούσαντες δὲ καὶ γενόμενοι πλήρεις θυμοῦ ἔκραζον λέγοντες· Μεγάλη ἡ Ἄρτεμις Ἐφεσίων.When the men heard this, they were enraged and began shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29En die stad is met verwarring gevul, en hulle het eendragtig na die teater gestorm nadat hulle Gajus en Aristargus, Masedoniërs, Paulus se reisgenote, gegryp het.καὶ ἐπλήσθη ἡ ⸀πόλις τῆς συγχύσεως, ὥρμησάν τε ὁμοθυμαδὸν εἰς τὸ θέατρον συναρπάσαντες Γάϊον καὶ Ἀρίσταρχον Μακεδόνας, συνεκδήμους Παύλου.Soon the whole city was in disarray. They rushed together into the theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia. 30En toe Paulus onder die volk wou ingaan, het die dissipels hom nie toegelaat nie.⸂Παύλου δὲ⸃ βουλομένου εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸν δῆμον οὐκ εἴων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταί·Paul wanted to go before the assembly, but the disciples would not allow him. 31Ook sommige van die Asiarge, wat sy vriende was, het na hom gestuur en hom gesmeek om hom nie in die teater te waag nie.τινὲς δὲ καὶ τῶν Ἀσιαρχῶν, ὄντες αὐτῷ φίλοι, πέμψαντες πρὸς αὐτὸν παρεκάλουν μὴ δοῦναι ἑαυτὸν εἰς τὸ θέατρον.Even some of Paul’s friends who were officials of the province of Asia sent word to him, begging him not to venture into the theatre. 32Sommige het dus iets uitgeroep en ander iets anders, want die vergadering was in verwarring, en die meeste het nie geweet waarom hulle bymekaargekom het nie.ἄλλοι μὲν οὖν ἄλλο τι ἔκραζον, ἦν γὰρ ἡ ἐκκλησία συγκεχυμένη, καὶ οἱ πλείους οὐκ ᾔδεισαν τίνος ἕνεκα συνεληλύθεισαν.Meanwhile the assembly was in turmoil. Some were shouting one thing and some another, and most of them did not even know why they were there.
The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander forward to explain himself, and he motioned for silence so he could make his defense to the people.
34Maar toe hulle agterkom dat hy ’n Jood is, het daar een stem uit almal opgegaan, en hulle het omtrent twee uur lank geskreeu: “Groot is die Artemis van die Efesiërs!”ἐπιγνόντες δὲ ὅτι Ἰουδαῖός ἐστιν φωνὴ ἐγένετο μία ἐκ πάντων ⸀ὡς ἐπὶ ὥρας δύο κραζόντων· Μεγάλη ἡ Ἄρτεμις Ἐφεσίων.But when they realized that he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
καταστείλας δὲ ⸂ὁ γραμματεὺς τὸν ὄχλον⸃ φησίν· Ἄνδρες Ἐφέσιοι, τίς γάρ ἐστιν ⸀ἀνθρώπων ὃς οὐ γινώσκει τὴν Ἐφεσίων πόλιν νεωκόρον οὖσαν τῆς ⸀μεγάλης Ἀρτέμιδος καὶ τοῦ διοπετοῦς;Finally the city clerk quieted the crowd and declared, “Men of Ephesus, doesn’t everyone know that the city of Ephesus is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?
36Aangesien hierdie dinge dan onweerlegbaar is, moet julle kalm bly en niks oorhaastig doen nie.ἀναντιρρήτων οὖν ὄντων τούτων δέον ἐστὶν ὑμᾶς κατεσταλμένους ὑπάρχειν καὶ μηδὲν προπετὲς πράσσειν.Since these things are undeniable, you ought to be calm and not do anything rash.
aSommige manuskripte lees: julle godin.
For you have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed our temple nor blasphemed our goddess.
So if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open and proconsuls are available. Let them bring charges against one another there.
39Maar as julle iets verder soek, sal dit in die wettige vergadering beslis word.
aSommige manuskripte lees: as julle oor ander dinge iets soek.
But if you are seeking anything beyond this, it must be settled in a legal assembly.
For we are in jeopardy of being charged with rioting for today’s events, and we have no justification to account for this commotion.”
