1Wanneer die HERE jou God die nasies uitroei wie se land die HERE jou God aan jou gee, en jy hulle onterf en in hulle stede en in hulle huise woon,כִּֽי־יַכְרִ֞ית יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ אֶת־הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ אֶת־אַרְצָ֑ם וִֽירִשְׁתָּ֕ם וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֥ בְעָרֵיהֶ֖ם וּבְבָתֵּיהֶֽם׃When the LORD your God has cut off the nations whose land He is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their cities and houses, 2moet jy drie stede vir jou afsonder in die midde van jou land wat die HERE jou God aan jou gee om dit in besit te neem.שָׁל֥וֹשׁ עָרִ֖ים תַּבְדִּ֣יל לָ֑ךְ בְּת֣וֹךְ אַרְצְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃then you are to set apart for yourselves three cities within the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess. 3Jy moet vir jou die pad gereedmaak en die grondgebied van jou land wat die HERE jou God jou laat erf, in drie dele verdeel, sodat elke doodslaner daarheen kan vlug.תָּכִ֣ין לְךָ֮ הַדֶּרֶךְ֒ וְשִׁלַּשְׁתָּ֙ אֶת־גְּב֣וּל אַרְצְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יַנְחִֽילְךָ֖ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְהָיָ֕ה לָנ֥וּס שָׁ֖מָּה כָּל־רֹצֵֽחַ׃You are to build roads for yourselves and divide into three regions the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that any manslayer can flee to these cities. 4En dit is die saak van die moordenaar wat soontoe sal vlug en lewe: wie sy naaste sonder kennis slaan, terwyl hy hom nie gister of eergister gehaat het nie,

Letterlik: van gister, eergister.

וְזֶה֙ דְּבַ֣ר הָרֹצֵ֔חַ אֲשֶׁר־יָנ֥וּס שָׁ֖מָּה וָחָ֑י אֲשֶׁ֨ר יַכֶּ֤ה אֶת־רֵעֵ֨הוּ֙ בִּבְלִי־דַ֔עַת וְה֛וּא לֹא־שֹׂנֵ֥א ל֖וֹ מִתְּמֹ֥ל שִׁלְשֹֽׁם׃Now this is the situation regarding the manslayer who flees to one of these cities to save his life, having killed his neighbor accidentally, without intending to harm him: 5en wie saam met sy naaste die bos ingaan om hout te kap, en sy hand swaai met die byl om die boom om te kap, en die yster glip van die hout af en sy naaste tref sodat hy sterf – hy moet na een van hierdie stede vlug en lewe,

Of: die yster glip van die steel af.

וַאֲשֶׁר֩ יָבֹ֨א אֶת־רֵעֵ֥הוּ בַיַּעַר֮ לַחְטֹ֣ב עֵצִים֒ וְנִדְּחָ֨ה יָד֤וֹ בַגַּרְזֶן֙ לִכְרֹ֣ת הָעֵ֔ץ וְנָשַׁ֤ל הַבַּרְזֶל֙ מִן־הָעֵ֔ץ וּמָצָ֥א אֶת־רֵעֵ֖הוּ וָמֵ֑ת ה֗וּא יָנ֛וּס אֶל־אַחַ֥ת הֶעָרִים־הָאֵ֖לֶּה וָחָֽי׃If he goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut timber and swings his axe to chop down a tree, but the blade flies off the handle and strikes and kills his neighbor, he may flee to one of these cities to save his life. 6sodat die losser van die bloed nie agter die moordenaar aan jaag terwyl sy hart warm is nie, en hom inhaal omdat die pad lank is, en hom dodelik slaan, terwyl daar vir hom geen doodsoordeel is nie, want hy het hom nie gister of eergister gehaat nie.

Letterlik: hom slaan, die lewe.

פֶּן־יִרְדֹּף֩ גֹּאֵ֨ל הַדָּ֜ם אַחֲרֵ֣י הָרֹצֵ֗חַ כִּי־יֵחַם֮ לְבָבוֹ֒ וְהִשִּׂיג֛וֹ כִּֽי־יִרְבֶּ֥ה הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ וְהִכָּ֣הוּ נָ֑פֶשׁ וְלוֹ֙ אֵ֣ין מִשְׁפַּט־מָ֔וֶת כִּ֠י לֹ֣א שֹׂנֵ֥א ה֛וּא ל֖וֹ מִתְּמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue the manslayer in a rage, overtake him if the distance is great, and strike him dead though he did not deserve to die, since he did not intend any harm. 7Daarom beveel ek jou: “Drie stede moet jy vir jou afsonder.”עַל־כֵּ֛ן אָנֹכִ֥י מְצַוְּךָ֖ לֵאמֹ֑ר שָׁלֹ֥שׁ עָרִ֖ים תַּבְדִּ֥יל לָֽךְ׃ סThis is why I am commanding you to set apart for yourselves three cities.

8En as die HERE jou God jou gebied vergroot, soos Hy aan jou vaders gesweer het, en jou die hele land gee waarvan Hy gespreek het om dit aan jou vaders te gee –וְאִם־יַרְחִ֞יב יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ אֶת־גְּבֻ֣לְךָ֔ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לַאֲבֹתֶ֑יךָ וְנָ֤תַן לְךָ֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֖ר לָתֵ֥ת לַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃And if the LORD your God enlarges your territory, as He swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land He promised them, 9as jy hierdie hele gebod onderhou om dit te doen, wat ek jou vandag beveel, om die HERE jou God lief te hê en al die dae in Sy weë te wandel, dan moet jy nog drie stede vir jou byvoeg by hierdie drie.כִּֽי־תִשְׁמֹר֩ אֶת־כָּל־הַמִּצְוָ֨ה הַזֹּ֜את לַעֲשֹׂתָ֗הּ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֣י מְצַוְּךָ֮ הַיּוֹם֒ לְאַהֲבָ֞ה אֶת־יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ וְלָלֶ֥כֶת בִּדְרָכָ֖יו כָּל־הַיָּמִ֑ים וְיָסַפְתָּ֨ לְךָ֥ עוֹד֙ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ עָרִ֔ים עַ֖ל הַשָּׁלֹ֥שׁ הָאֵֽלֶּה׃and if you carefully keep all these commandments I am giving you today, loving the LORD your God and walking in His ways at all times, then you are to add three more cities to these three. 10Sodat daar nie onskuldige bloed vergiet word in die middel van jou land wat die HERE jou God jou as erfdeel gee nie, en bloedskuld op jou kom.

Letterlik: en bloede op jou sal wees.

וְלֹ֤א יִשָּׁפֵךְ֙ דָּ֣ם נָקִ֔י בְּקֶ֣רֶב אַרְצְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ נַחֲלָ֑ה וְהָיָ֥ה עָלֶ֖יךָ דָּמִֽים׃ סThus innocent blood will not be shed in the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.

11Maar as iemand sy naaste haat en vir hom lê en wag en teen hom opstaan en hom dodelik slaan, sodat hy sterf, en hy vlug na een van hierdie stede,

Letterlik: hom slaan, die lewe.

וְכִֽי־יִהְיֶ֥ה אִישׁ֙ שֹׂנֵ֣א לְרֵעֵ֔הוּ וְאָ֤רַב לוֹ֙ וְקָ֣ם עָלָ֔יו וְהִכָּ֥הוּ נֶ֖פֶשׁ וָמֵ֑ת וְנָ֕ס אֶל־אַחַ֖ת הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵֽל׃If, however, a man hates his neighbor and lies in wait, attacks him and kills him, and then flees to one of these cities, 12dan moet die ouderlinge van sy stad stuur en hom van daar haal en hom in die hand van die losser van die bloed gee, sodat hy sterf.וְשָֽׁלְחוּ֙ זִקְנֵ֣י עִיר֔וֹ וְלָקְח֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ מִשָּׁ֑ם וְנָתְנ֣וּ אֹת֗וֹ בְּיַ֛ד גֹּאֵ֥ל הַדָּ֖ם וָמֵֽת׃the elders of his city must send for him, bring him back, and hand him over to the avenger of blood to die. 13Jou oog mag hom nie spaar nie, en jy moet die bloed van die onskuldige uit Israel wegruim, sodat dit goed met jou gaan.לֹא־תָח֥וֹס עֵֽינְךָ֖ עָלָ֑יו וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֧ דַֽם־הַנָּקִ֛י מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְט֥וֹב לָֽךְ׃ סYou must show him no pity. You are to purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, that it may go well with you.

14Jy mag nie die grens van jou naaste verskuif wat die voriges getrek het nie, in jou erfdeel wat jy sal erf in die land wat die HERE jou God jou gee om dit in besit te neem.לֹ֤א תַסִּיג֙ גְּב֣וּל רֵֽעֲךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֥ר גָּבְל֖וּ רִאשֹׁנִ֑ים בְּנַחֲלָֽתְךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּנְחַ֔ל בָּאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ סYou must not move your neighbor’s boundary marker, which was set up by your ancestors to mark the inheritance you shall receive in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.

15Een getuie mag nie teen iemand opstaan oor enige ongeregtigheid of enige sonde, by enige sonde wat hy sondig nie; op die verklaring van twee getuies of op die verklaring van drie getuies moet 'n saak vasstaan.

Letterlik: op die mond van twee getuies.

לֹֽא־יָקוּם֩ עֵ֨ד אֶחָ֜ד בְּאִ֗ישׁ לְכָל־עָוֺן֙ וּלְכָל־חַטָּ֔את בְּכָל־חֵ֖טְא אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶֽחֱטָ֑א עַל־פִּ֣י׀ שְׁנֵ֣י עֵדִ֗ים א֛וֹ עַל־פִּ֥י שְׁלֹשָֽׁה־עֵדִ֖ים יָק֥וּם דָּבָֽר׃A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing or sin against a man, regardless of what offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. 16As 'n getuie van geweld teen iemand opstaan om teen hom te getuig van afvalligheid,כִּֽי־יָק֥וּם עֵד־חָמָ֖ס בְּאִ֑ישׁ לַעֲנ֥וֹת בּ֖וֹ סָרָֽה׃If a false witness testifies against someone, accusing him of a crime, 17dan moet die twee manne wat die regsaak het, voor die aangesig van die HERE gaan staan, voor die priesters en die regters wat daar in daardie dae sal wees.וְעָמְד֧וּ שְׁנֵֽי־הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־לָהֶ֥ם הָרִ֖יב לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה לִפְנֵ֤י הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ וְהַשֹּׁ֣פְטִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִהְי֖וּ בַּיָּמִ֥ים הָהֵֽם׃both parties to the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD, before the priests and judges who are in office at that time. 18En die regters moet deeglik ondersoek doen, en kyk, as die getuie 'n valse getuie is, wat vals teen sy broer getuig het,וְדָרְשׁ֥וּ הַשֹּׁפְטִ֖ים הֵיטֵ֑ב וְהִנֵּ֤ה עֵֽד־שֶׁ֨קֶר֙ הָעֵ֔ד שֶׁ֖קֶר עָנָ֥ה בְאָחִֽיו׃The judges shall investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is proven to be a liar who has falsely accused his brother, 19dan moet julle aan hom doen soos hy beplan het om aan sy broer te doen; so moet jy die kwaad uit jou midde wegruim.וַעֲשִׂ֣יתֶם ל֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר זָמַ֖ם לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת לְאָחִ֑יו וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥ הָרָ֖ע מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃you must do to him as he intended to do to his brother. So you must purge the evil from among you. 20En die wat oorbly, sal hoor en vrees, en hulle sal nie weer voortgaan om soos hierdie kwade saak in jou midde te doen nie.וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִ֖ים יִשְׁמְע֣וּ וְיִרָ֑אוּ וְלֹֽא־יֹסִ֨פוּ לַעֲשׂ֜וֹת ע֗וֹד כַּדָּבָ֥ר הָרָ֛ע הַזֶּ֖ה בְּקִרְבֶּֽךָ׃Then the rest of the people will hear and be afraid, and they will never again do anything so evil among you. 21En jou oog mag nie spaar nie: lewe vir lewe, oog vir oog, tand vir tand, hand vir hand, voet vir voet.וְלֹ֥א תָח֖וֹס עֵינֶ֑ךָ נֶ֣פֶשׁ בְּנֶ֗פֶשׁ עַ֤יִן בְּעַ֨יִן֙ שֵׁ֣ן בְּשֵׁ֔ן יָ֥ד בְּיָ֖ד רֶ֥גֶל בְּרָֽגֶל׃ סYou must show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, and foot for foot.
