When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel.2Die naam van sy seun, die eersgeborene, was Joël, en die naam van sy tweede was Abija; hulle was rigters in Berseba. The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second was Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba.3Maar sy seuns het nie gewandel nie; hulle het agter die wins aan afgewyk, omkoopgeld geneem en die reg laat afwyk. But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside toward dishonest gain, accepting bribes and perverting justice.
So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.5Hulle het vir hom gesê: “Kyk, jy het oud geword, en jou seuns het nie in jou weë gewandel nie. וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו הִנֵּה֙ אַתָּ֣ה זָקַ֔נְתָּ וּבָנֶ֕יךָ לֹ֥א הָלְכ֖וּ בִּדְרָכֶ֑יךָ עַתָּ֗ה שִֽׂימָה־לָּ֥נוּ מֶ֛לֶךְ לְשָׁפְטֵ֖נוּ כְּכָל־הַגּוֹיִֽם׃“Look,” they said, “you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king to judge us like all the other nations.”6Maar die saak was sleg in die oë van Samuel toe hulle gesê het: “Gee vir ons ’n koning om oor ons reg te spreek.” En Samuel het tot die HERE gebid. But when they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” their demand was displeasing in the sight of Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.
And the LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected Me as their king.8Soos al die dade wat hulle gedoen het van die dag af dat Ek hulle uit Egipte laat optrek het tot op hierdie dag, en hulle het My verlaat en ander gode gedien, so doen hulle ook aan jou. Just as they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.9Luister dan nou na hulle stem; net, waarsku hulle ernstig en maak vir hulle bekend die reg van die koning wat oor hulle sal regeer.”aOf: die gebruik van die koning. Now listen to their voice; but you must solemnly warn them and show them the manner of the king who will reign over them.”
So Samuel spoke all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king.
En hy het gesê: “Dit sal die reg wees van die koning wat oor julle sal regeer: julle seuns sal hy neem en vir hom by sy strydwa en by sy ruiters aanstel, en hulle sal voor sy strydwa uit hardloop;וַיֹּ֕אמֶר זֶ֗ה יִֽהְיֶה֙ מִשְׁפַּ֣ט הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִמְלֹ֖ךְ עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם אֶת־בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם יִקָּ֗ח וְשָׂ֥ם לוֹ֙ בְּמֶרְכַּבְתּ֣וֹ וּבְפָרָשָׁ֔יו וְרָצ֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י מֶרְכַּבְתּֽוֹ׃He said, “This will be the manner of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them to serve his own chariots and horses, and to run in front of his chariots.12Hy sal hulle ook aanstel as owerstes oor duisende en owerstes oor groepe van 50, om sy ploegland te ploeg en sy oes te maai, en om sy oorlogstuig te maak en die tuig van sy strydwa. He will appoint some for himself as commanders of thousands and of fifties, and others to plow his ground, to reap his harvest, and to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.13En julle dogters sal hy neem as salfmengers en as kokke en as bakkers. And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers.14En julle landerye en julle wingerde en julle olyfbome, die goeies, sal hy neem en aan sy dienaars gee. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his servants.15Van julle saad en julle wingerde sal hy die tiende neem en dit aan sy hofamptenare en sy dienaars gee. He will take a tenth of your grain and grape harvest and give it to his officials and servants.16En julle slawe en julle slavinne en julle goeie jongmanne en julle donkies sal hy neem en vir sy werk gebruik. And he will take your menservants and maidservants and your best cattle and donkeys and put them to his own use.17Van julle kleinvee sal hy die tiende neem, en julle self sal vir hom slawe wees. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.18En julle sal op daardie dag uitroep vanweë julle koning wat julle vir julle gekies het, maar die HERE sal julle op daardie dag nie antwoord nie.”aLetterlik: van voor die aangesig van julle koning. When that day comes, you will beg for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.”19Maar die volk het geweier om na die stem van Samuel te luister, en hulle het gesê: “Nee, maar daar moet ’n koning oor ons wees,וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ הָעָ֔ם לִשְׁמֹ֖עַ בְּק֣וֹל שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֹּ֔א כִּ֥י אִם־מֶ֖לֶךְ יִֽהְיֶ֥ה עָלֵֽינוּ׃Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We must have a king over us.20en ons sal ook wees soos al die nasies, en ons koning sal oor ons reg spreek en voor ons uittrek en ons oorloë voer.” Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to judge us, to go out before us, and to fight our battles.”21En Samuel het al die woorde van die volk gehoor en dit in die ore van die HERE gespreek. Samuel listened to all the words of the people and repeated them in the hearing of the LORD.
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֤ה אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵל֙ שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקוֹלָ֔ם וְהִמְלַכְתָּ֥ לָהֶ֖ם מֶ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל־אַנְשֵׁ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְכ֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ לְעִירֽוֹ׃ פ“Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “Appoint a king for them.” Then Samuel told the men of Israel, “Everyone must go back to his city.”
