On hearing this report, King Hezekiah tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.2Hy het Eljakim, wat oor die huis was, en Sebna, die skrywer, en die ouderlinge van die priesters, met sak bedek, gestuur na Jesaja, die profeet, die seun van Amoz. And he sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the scribe, and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz3Hulle het vir hom gesê: “So sê Hiskia: Hierdie dag is ’n dag van benoudheid en teregwysing en veragting, want kinders het tot by die geboortestoel gekom, maar daar is geen krag om te baar nie.aOf: tot by die punt van die baring.וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ יוֹם־צָרָ֧ה וְתוֹכֵחָ֛ה וּנְאָצָ֖ה הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה כִּ֣י בָ֤אוּ בָנִים֙ עַד־מַשְׁבֵּ֔ר וְכֹ֥חַ אַ֖יִן לְלֵדָֽה׃to tell him, “This is what Hezekiah says: Today is a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to the point of birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.4Miskien sal die HERE jou God al die woorde van Rab-Sake hoor, wie sy heer, die koning van Assirië, gestuur het om die lewende God te smaad, en Hy sal die woorde bestraf wat die HERE jou God gehoor het. Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to defy the living God, and He will rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the remnant that still survives.”
So the servants of King Hezekiah went to Isaiah,6Jesaja het vir hulle gesê: “Dit moet julle vir julle heer sê: ‘So sê die HERE: Moenie vrees vir die woorde wat jy gehoor het nie, waarmee die jongmanne van die koning van Assirië My gelaster het.וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ יְשַֽׁעְיָ֔הוּ כֹּ֥ה תֹאמְר֖וּן אֶל־אֲדֹֽנֵיכֶ֑ם כֹּ֣ה׀ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה אַל־תִּירָא֙ מִפְּנֵ֤י הַדְּבָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁמַ֗עְתָּ אֲשֶׁ֧ר גִּדְּפ֛וּ נַעֲרֵ֥י מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֖וּר אֹתִֽי׃who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.7Kyk, Ek gee ’n gees in hom, en hy sal ’n gerug hoor en na sy land terugkeer, en Ek sal hom met die swaard laat val in sy land.’” Behold, I will put a spirit in him so that he will hear a rumor and return to his own land, where I will cause him to fall by the sword.’”
When the Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.9Toe hoor hy aangaande Tirhaka, koning van Kus: “Kyk, hy het uitgetrek om teen jou te veg.” Now Sennacherib had been warned about Tirhakah king of Cush: “Look, he has set out to fight against you.” כֹּ֣ה תֹאמְר֗וּן אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֤הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַל־יַשִּׁאֲךָ֣ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַתָּ֛ה בֹּטֵ֥חַ בּ֖וֹ לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹ֤א תִנָּתֵן֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם בְּיַ֖ד מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃“Give this message to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you by saying that Jerusalem will not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.11Kyk, jy het gehoor wat die konings van Assirië aan al die lande gedoen het om hulle te verdelg; en sal jy gered word? Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the other countries, devoting them to destruction. Will you then be spared?12Het die gode van die nasies wat my vaders vernietig het, hulle gered: Gosan en Haran en Resef en die kinders van Eden wat in Telassar was? Did the gods of the nations destroyed by my fathers rescue those nations—the gods of Gozan, Haran, and Rezeph, and of the people of Eden in Telassar?13Waar is die koning van Hamat en die koning van Arpad en die koning van die stad Sefarwaim, Hena en Iwa?” Where are the kings of Hamath, Arpad, Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?’”
So Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers, read it, and went up to the house of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD.15En Hiskia het voor die aangesig van die HERE gebid en gesê: “HERE, God van Israel, wat op die gerubs sit, U is God, U alleen, vir al die koninkryke van die aarde; U het die hemel en die aarde gemaak. And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.16Neig U oor, HERE, en hoor; open U oë, HERE, en sien; en hoor die woorde van Sanherib wat hy gestuur het om die lewende God te hoon. Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see. Listen to the words that Sennacherib has sent to defy the living God.17Waarlik, HERE, die konings van Assirië het die nasies en hulle land verwoes,אָמְנָ֖ם יְהוָ֑ה הֶחֱרִ֜יבוּ מַלְכֵ֥י אַשּׁ֛וּר אֶת־הַגּוֹיִ֖ם וְאֶת־אַרְצָֽם׃Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste these nations and their lands.18en hulle gode in die vuur gegooi, want hulle was nie gode nie, maar die werk van mensehande, hout en klip; so het hulle hulle vernietig. They have cast their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone—the work of human hands.19Nou dan, HERE ons God, red ons tog uit sy hand, sodat al die koninkryke van die aarde kan weet dat U, HERE, God is, U alleen.” And now, O LORD our God, please save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.”
Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria.21Dit is die woord wat die HERE oor hom gespreek het:
