Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “Please take note that the place where we meet with you is too small for us.2Laat ons tog na die Jordaan gaan en elkeen daarvandaan een balk neem, en laat ons vir ons daar 'n plek maak om daar te woon.” En hy het gesê: “Gaan.” Please let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a log so we can build ourselves a place to live there.” Then one of them said, “Please come with your servants.” “I will come,” he replied.4En hy het saam met hulle gegaan; en hulle het by die Jordaan gekom en die bome afgekap. So Elisha went with them, and when they came to the Jordan, they began to cut down some trees.5En terwyl die een 'n balk afkap, het die yster in die water geval; en hy het uitgeroep en gesê: “Ag, my heer, en dit was geleen!” As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axe head fell into the water. “Oh, my master,” he cried out, “it was borrowed!”6Die man van God sê: “Waarheen het dit geval?” וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים אָ֣נָה נָפָ֑ל וַיַּרְאֵ֨הוּ֙ אֶת־הַמָּק֔וֹם וַיִּקְצָב־עֵץ֙ וַיַּשְׁלֶךְ־שָׁ֔מָּה וַיָּ֖צֶף הַבַּרְזֶֽל׃“Where did it fall?” asked the man of God. And when he showed him the place, the man of God cut a stick, threw it there, and made the iron float.7En hy het gesê: “Tel dit vir jou op.” וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הָ֣רֶם לָ֑ךְ וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח יָד֖וֹ וַיִּקָּחֵֽהוּ׃ פ“Lift it out,” he said, and the man reached out his hand and took it.
8Die koning van Aram het teen Israel oorlog gevoer; en hy het met sy dienaars beraadslaag en gesê: “Op so en so 'n plek sal my kamp wees.” Now the king of Aram was at war against Israel. After consulting with his servants, he said, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”9En die man van God het na die koning van Israel gestuur om te sê: “Wees op u hoede om nie by hierdie plek verby te gaan nie, want Aram kom daar af.”aOf: want Aram lê daar in hinderlaag. Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Be careful not to pass by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”10Toe stuur die koning van Israel na die plek waarvan die man van God vir hom gesê het, en hy het daar op sy hoede gebly, nie een keer nie en nie twee keer nie. So the king of Israel sent word to the place the man of God had pointed out. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.11En die hart van die koning van Aram was onstuimig oor hierdie saak; en hy het sy dienaars geroep en vir hulle gesê: “Sal julle my nie vertel wie van ons aan die kant van die koning van Israel is nie?”aLetterlik: wie van ons na die koning van Israel toe is. For this reason the king of Aram became enraged and called his servants to demand of them, “Tell me, which one of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”12En een van sy dienaars het gesê: “Nee, my heer die koning, maar Elisa, die profeet wat in Israel is, vertel vir die koning van Israel die woorde wat u in u slaapkamer spreek.” But one of his servants replied, “No one, my lord the king. For Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”13En hy het gesê: “Gaan en kyk waar hy is, dat ek kan stuur en hom laat haal.” So the king said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send men to capture him.” On receiving the report, “Elisha is in Dothan,”14Toe stuur hy perde en wa daarheen en ’n swaar leër. וַיִּשְׁלַח־שָׁ֛מָּה סוּסִ֥ים וְרֶ֖כֶב וְחַ֣יִל כָּבֵ֑ד וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ לַ֔יְלָה וַיַּקִּ֖פוּ עַל־הָעִֽיר׃the king of Aram sent horses, chariots, and a great army. They went there by night and surrounded the city.15Toe die dienaar van die man van God vroeg opstaan en uitgaan, kyk, daar was ’n leër wat die stad omsingel, ook perd en wa. Toe sê sy jongman vir hom: “Ag, my heer! Hoe moet ons maak?” When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, behold, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”16En hy het gesê: “Moenie vrees nie, want dié wat by ons is, is meer as dié wat by hulle is.”וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַל־תִּירָ֑א כִּ֤י רַבִּים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתָּ֔נוּ מֵאֲשֶׁ֖ר אוֹתָֽם׃“Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”17Toe bid Elisa en sê: “\nd HERE\nd*, maak tog sy oë oop, dat hy kan sien.” Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that the hills were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.18Toe hulle na hom afkom, het Elisa tot die \nd HERE\nd* gebid en gesê: “Slaan tog hierdie nasie met verblinding.” As the Arameans came down against him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, “Please strike these people with blindness.” So He struck them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.19En Elisa het vir hulle gesê: “Dit is nie die pad nie, en dit is nie die stad nie; kom agter my aan, dan sal ek julle na die man lei wat julle soek.” En hy het hulle na Samaria gelei. And Elisha told them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are seeking.” When they had entered Samaria, Elisha said, “O LORD, open the eyes of these men that they may see.” Then the LORD opened their eyes, and they looked around and discovered that they were in Samaria.21Toe die koning van Israel hulle sien, het hy vir Elisa gesê: “Moet ek slaan, moet ek slaan, my vader?” And when the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?”22Maar hy het gesê: “Jy mag nie slaan nie. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א תַכֶּ֔ה הַאֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁבִ֛יתָ בְּחַרְבְּךָ֥ וּֽבְקַשְׁתְּךָ֖ אַתָּ֣ה מַכֶּ֑ה שִׂים֩ לֶ֨חֶם וָמַ֜יִם לִפְנֵיהֶ֗ם וְיֹֽאכְלוּ֙ וְיִשְׁתּ֔וּ וְיֵלְכ֖וּ אֶל־אֲדֹנֵיהֶֽם׃“Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? So the king prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.
Some time later, Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army and marched up to besiege Samaria.25En daar was ’n groot hongersnood in Samaria, en kyk, hulle het dit beleër, totdat ’n donkiekop vir 80 silwer was en ’n kwart van die kab vir vyf silwer.aOngeveer 80 sikkels silwer is ongeveer 900 gram; ’n kab is ongeveer 1,2 liter, en vyf sikkels silwer is ongeveer 57 gram. So there was a great famine in Samaria. Indeed, they besieged the city so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter cab of dove’s dung sold for five shekels of silver.26En toe die koning van Israel op die muur verbygaan, het 'n vrou na hom geroep en gesê: “Help, my heer die koning!” As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”27Hy sê: “Laat die \nd HERE\nd* jou nie help nie. And as he passed by on the wall, the people saw the sackcloth under his clothes next to his skin.31En hy het gesê: “Mag God so aan my doen en so daaraan toevoeg, as die kop van Elisa, die seun van Safat, vandag op hom bly staan!” He announced, “May God punish me, and ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders through this day!”32En Elisa het in sy huis gesit, en die ouderlinge het by hom gesit; en hy het 'n man voor hom uit gestuur.
