1Joas was sewe jaar oud toe hy koning geword het, en hy het 40 jaar in Jerusalem geregeer; en die naam van sy moeder was Sibja, van Berseba.בֶּן־שֶׁ֤בַע שָׁנִים֙ יֹאָ֣שׁ בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ וְאַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה מָלַ֖ךְ בִּֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְשֵׁ֣ם אִמּ֔וֹ צִבְיָ֖ה מִבְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from Beersheba. 2Joas het gedoen wat opreg is in die oë van die HERE, al die dae van Jehojada, die priester.וַיַּ֧עַשׂ יוֹאָ֛שׁ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כָּל־יְמֵ֖י יְהוֹיָדָ֥ע הַכֹּהֵֽן׃And Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 3Jehojada het vir hom twee vroue geneem, en hy het seuns en dogters verwek.וַיִּשָּׂא־ל֥וֹ יְהוֹיָדָ֖ע נָשִׁ֣ים שְׁתָּ֑יִם וַיּ֖וֹלֶד בָּנִ֥ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃Jehoiada took for him two wives, and he had sons and daughters.

4En daarna was dit in die hart van Joas om die huis van die HERE te vernuwe.וַיְהִ֖י אַחֲרֵי כֵ֑ן הָיָה֙ עִם־לֵ֣ב יוֹאָ֔שׁ לְחַדֵּ֖שׁ אֶת־בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃Some time later, Joash set his heart on repairing the house of the LORD. 5Hy het die priesters en die Leviete bymekaargemaak en vir hulle gesê: “Gaan uit na die stede van Juda en versamel geld uit die hele Israel om die huis van julle God te versterk, jaar na jaar; en julle moet haastig wees met die saak.” Maar die Leviete was nie haastig nie.וַיִּקְבֹּץ֮ אֶת־הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים וְהַלְוִיִּם֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֡ם צְא֣וּ לְעָרֵ֪י יְהוּדָ֟ה וְקִבְצוּ֩ מִכָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל כֶּ֜סֶף לְחַזֵּ֣ק׀ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם מִדֵּ֤י שָׁנָה֙ בְּשָׁנָ֔ה וְאַתֶּ֖ם תְּמַהֲר֣וּ לַדָּבָ֑ר וְלֹ֥א מִֽהֲר֖וּ הַֽלְוִיִּֽם׃So he gathered the priests and Levites and said, “Go out to the cities of Judah and collect the money due annually from all Israel, to repair the house of your God. Do it quickly.” The Levites, however, did not make haste. 6Die koning het Jehojada, die hoof, geroep en vir hom gesê: “Waarom het jy nie van die Leviete geëis om uit Juda en uit Jerusalem die heffing van Moses, die kneg van die HERE, en van die vergadering van Israel vir die tent van die getuienis in te bring nie?”וַיִּקְרָ֣א הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ לִֽיהוֹיָדָ֣ע הָרֹאשׁ֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ מַדּ֨וּעַ֙ לֹֽא־דָרַ֣שְׁתָּ עַל־הַלְוִיִּ֔ם לְהָבִ֞יא מִֽיהוּדָ֣ה וּמִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם אֶת־מַשְׂאַת֙ מֹשֶׁ֣ה עֶֽבֶד־יְהוָ֔ה וְהַקָּהָ֖ל לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לְאֹ֖הֶל הָעֵדֽוּת׃So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said, “Why have you not required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses the servant of the LORD and by the assembly of Israel for the Tent of the Testimony?” 7Want die goddelose Atalia, haar seuns het in die huis van God ingebreek, en ook al die heilige dinge van die huis van die HERE het hulle vir die Baäls gebruik.”

כִּ֤י עֲתַלְיָ֨הוּ֙ הַמִּרְשַׁ֔עַת בָּנֶ֥יהָ פָרְצ֖וּ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְגַם֙ כָּל־קָדְשֵׁ֣י בֵית־יְהוָ֔ה עָשׂ֖וּ לַבְּעָלִֽים׃For the sons of that wicked woman Athaliah had broken into the house of God and had even used the sacred objects of the house of the LORD for the Baals. 8Toe het die koning gesê, en hulle het ’n kis gemaak en dit buite by die poort van die huis van die HERE neergesit.וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ אֲר֣וֹן אֶחָ֑ד וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֛הוּ בְּשַׁ֥עַר בֵּית־יְהוָ֖ה חֽוּצָה׃At the king’s command a chest was made and placed outside, at the gate of the house of the LORD. 9En hulle het ’n oproep laat uitgaan in Juda en in Jerusalem om vir die HERE die heffing van Moses, die kneg van God, op Israel in die woestyn te bring.

וַיִּתְּנוּ־ק֞וֹל בִּֽיהוּדָ֣ה וּבִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם לְהָבִ֤יא לַֽיהוָה֙ מַשְׂאַ֞ת מֹשֶׁ֧ה עֶֽבֶד־הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃And a proclamation was issued in Judah and Jerusalem that they were to bring to the LORD the tax imposed by Moses the servant of God on Israel in the wilderness. 10Al die owerstes en die hele volk was bly; hulle het gebring en in die kis gegooi totdat hulle klaar was.וַיִּשְׂמְח֥וּ כָל־הַשָּׂרִ֖ים וְכָל־הָעָ֑ם וַיָּבִ֛יאוּ וַיַּשְׁלִ֥יכוּ לָאָר֖וֹן עַד־לְכַלֵּֽה׃All the officers and all the people rejoiced and brought their contributions, and they dropped them in the chest until it was full. 11En dit het gebeur, op die tyd wanneer die kis deur die hand van die Leviete na die koning se amptenare gebring is, en wanneer hulle gesien het dat daar baie geld was, dat die skrywer van die koning en die opsiener van die hoofpriester gekom het en die kis leeggemaak het, en dit opgetel en op sy plek teruggebring het. So het hulle dag na dag gedoen, en hulle het geld in oorvloed ingesamel.וַיְהִ֡י בְּעֵת֩ יָבִ֨יא אֶת־הָֽאָר֜וֹן אֶל־פְּקֻדַּ֣ת הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ בְּיַ֣ד הַלְוִיִּם֒ וְכִרְאוֹתָ֞ם כִּי־רַ֣ב הַכֶּ֗סֶף וּבָ֨א סוֹפֵ֤ר הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ וּפְקִיד֙ כֹּהֵ֣ן הָרֹ֔אשׁ וִיעָ֨רוּ֙ אֶת־הָ֣אָר֔וֹן וְיִשָּׂאֻ֖הוּ וִֽישִׁיבֻ֣הוּ אֶל־מְקֹמ֑וֹ כֹּ֤ה עָשׂוּ֙ לְי֣וֹם׀ בְּי֔וֹם וַיַּֽאַסְפוּ־כֶ֖סֶף לָרֹֽב׃Whenever the chest was brought by the Levites to the king’s overseers and they saw that there was a large amount of money, the royal scribe and the officer of the high priest would come and empty the chest and carry it back to its place. They did this daily and gathered the money in abundance. 12En die koning en Jojada het dit gegee aan dié wat die werk van die diens van die huis van die HERE gedoen het, en hulle het klipkappers en ambagsmanne gehuur om die huis van die HERE te vernuwe, en ook ambagsmanne in yster en brons om die huis van die HERE te herstel.וַיִּתְּנֵ֨הוּ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וִֽיהוֹיָדָ֗ע אֶל־עוֹשֵׂה֙ מְלֶ֨אכֶת֙ עֲבוֹדַ֣ת בֵּית־יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ שֹׂכְרִים֙ חֹצְבִ֣ים וְחָרָשִׁ֔ים לְחַדֵּ֖שׁ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וְ֠גַם לְחָרָשֵׁ֤י בַרְזֶל֙ וּנְחֹ֔שֶׁת לְחַזֵּ֖ק אֶת־בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃Then the king and Jehoiada would give the money to those who supervised the labor on the house of the LORD to hire stonecutters and carpenters to restore the house of the LORD, as well as workers in iron and bronze to repair the house of the LORD. 13En die werkers het gewerk, en die herstelwerk het deur hulle hand gevorder, en hulle het die huis van God volgens sy regte vorm opgerig en dit versterk.

Letterlik: en genesing het opgekom vir die werk deur hulle hand.

וַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֙ עֹשֵׂ֣י הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה וַתַּ֧עַל אֲרוּכָ֛ה לַמְּלָאכָ֖ה בְּיָדָ֑ם וַֽיַּעֲמִ֜ידוּ אֶת־בֵּ֧ית הָֽאֱלֹהִ֛ים עַל־מַתְכֻּנְתּ֖וֹ וַֽיְאַמְּצֻֽהוּ׃So the workmen labored, and in their hands the repair work progressed. They restored the house of God according to its specifications, and they reinforced it. 14En toe hulle klaar was, het hulle die res van die geld voor die koning en Jojada gebring, en hy het daarvan voorwerpe vir die huis van die HERE gemaak: voorwerpe vir die diens en vir die brandoffers, en bakke en voorwerpe van goud en silwer. En hulle het voortdurend brandoffers in die huis van die HERE gebring, al die dae van Jojada.וּֽכְכַלּוֹתָ֡ם הֵבִ֣יאוּ לִפְנֵי֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ וִֽיהוֹיָדָ֜ע אֶת־שְׁאָ֣ר הַכֶּ֗סֶף וַיַּעֲשֵׂ֨הוּ כֵלִ֤ים לְבֵית־יְהוָה֙ כְּלֵ֣י שָׁרֵ֔ת וְהַעֲל֣וֹת וְכַפּ֔וֹת וּכְלֵ֥י זָהָ֖ב וָכָ֑סֶף וַ֠יִּֽהְיוּ מַעֲלִ֨ים עֹל֤וֹת בְּבֵית־יְהוָה֙ תָּמִ֔יד כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֥י יְהוֹיָדָֽע׃ פWhen they were finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and Jehoiada, and with it were made articles for the house of the LORD—utensils for the service and for the burnt offerings, dishes, and other objects of gold and silver. Throughout the days of Jehoiada, burnt offerings were presented regularly in the house of the LORD.

15En Jojada het oud en versadig van dae geword, en hy het gesterf; hy was 130 jaar oud by sy dood.וַיִּזְקַ֧ן יְהוֹיָדָ֛ע וַיִּשְׂבַּ֥ע יָמִ֖ים וַיָּמֹ֑ת בֶּן־מֵאָ֧ה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים שָׁנָ֖ה בְּמוֹתֽוֹ׃When Jehoiada was old and full of years, he died at the age of 130. 16En hulle het hom in die stad van Dawid by die konings begrawe, omdat hy goed gedoen het in Israel, en teenoor God en sy huis.וַיִּקְבְּרֻ֥הוּ בְעִיר־דָּוִ֖יד עִם־הַמְּלָכִ֑ים כִּֽי־עָשָׂ֤ה טוֹבָה֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְעִ֥ם הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים וּבֵיתֽוֹ׃ סAnd Jehoiada was buried with the kings in the City of David, because he had done what was good in Israel for God and His temple.

17Na die dood van Jehojada het die owerstes van Juda gekom en hulle voor die koning neergebuig. Toe het die koning na hulle geluister.וְאַֽחֲרֵ֥י מוֹת֙ יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע בָּ֚אוּ שָׂרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ לַמֶּ֑לֶךְ אָ֛ז שָׁמַ֥ע הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃After the death of Jehoiada, however, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them. 18En hulle het die huis van die HERE, die God van hulle vaders, verlaat en die gewyde pale en die afgodsbeelde gedien; en daar was toorn oor Juda en Jerusalem weens hierdie skuld van hulle.וַיַּֽעַזְב֗וּ אֶת־בֵּ֤ית יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֔ם וַיַּֽעַבְד֥וּ אֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרִ֖ים וְאֶת־הָֽעֲצַבִּ֑ים וַֽיְהִי־קֶ֗צֶף עַל־יְהוּדָה֙ וִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם בְּאַשְׁמָתָ֖ם זֹֽאת׃They abandoned the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and idols. So wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs. 19Hy het profete onder hulle gestuur om hulle terug te bring na die HERE, en hulle het teen hulle getuig, maar hulle het nie geluister nie.וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח בָּהֶם֙ נְבִאִ֔ים לַהֲשִׁיבָ֖ם אֶל־יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּעִ֥ידוּ בָ֖ם וְלֹ֥א הֶאֱזִֽינוּ׃ סNevertheless, the LORD sent prophets to bring the people back to Him and to testify against them, but they would not listen. 20En die Gees van God het Sagaria, die seun van die priester Jojada, beklee, en hy het bo die volk gaan staan en vir hulle gesê: “So sê God: ‘Waarom oortree julle die gebooie van die HERE, sodat julle nie voorspoedig is nie? Omdat julle die HERE verlaat het, het Hy julle verlaat.’”וְר֣וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֗ים לָֽבְשָׁה֙ אֶת־זְכַרְיָה֙ בֶּן־יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד מֵעַ֣ל לָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לָהֶ֜ם כֹּ֣ה׀ אָמַ֣ר הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים לָמָה֩ אַתֶּ֨ם עֹבְרִ֜ים אֶת־מִצְוֺ֤ת יְהוָה֙ וְלֹ֣א תַצְלִ֔יחוּ כִּֽי־עֲזַבְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה וַיַּֽעֲזֹ֥ב אֶתְכֶֽם׃Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood up before the people and said to them, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, He has forsaken you.’” 21Maar hulle het teen hom saamgesweer en hom op gebod van die koning in die voorhof van die huis van die HERE met klip gestenig.וַיִּקְשְׁר֣וּ עָלָ֔יו וַיִּרְגְּמֻ֥הוּ אֶ֖בֶן בְּמִצְוַ֣ת הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ בַּחֲצַ֖ר בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃But they conspired against Zechariah, and by order of the king, they stoned him in the courtyard of the house of the LORD. 22Joas, die koning, het nie die troue liefde onthou wat Jehojada, sy vader, aan hom bewys het nie, maar het sy seun vermoor. En toe hy gesterf het, het hy gesê: “Mag die HERE dit sien en eis.”וְלֹא־זָכַ֞ר יוֹאָ֣שׁ הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ הַחֶ֨סֶד֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשָׂ֜ה יְהוֹיָדָ֤ע אָבִיו֙ עִמּ֔וֹ וַֽיַּהֲרֹ֖ג אֶת־בְּנ֑וֹ וּכְמוֹת֣וֹ אָמַ֔ר יֵ֥רֶא יְהוָ֖ה וְיִדְרֹֽשׁ׃ פThus King Joash failed to remember the kindness that Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to him. Instead, Joash killed Jehoiada’s son. As he lay dying, Zechariah said, “May the LORD see this and call you to account.”

23Aan die draai van die jaar het die leër van Aram teen hom opgetrek, en hulle het in Juda en Jerusalem gekom en al die owerstes van die volk uit die volk vernietig; en al hulle buit het hulle aan die koning van Damaskus gestuur.וַיְהִ֣י׀ לִתְקוּפַ֣ת הַשָּׁנָ֗ה עָלָ֣ה עָלָיו֮ חֵ֣יל אֲרָם֒ וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ אֶל־יְהוּדָה֙ וִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וַיַּשְׁחִ֛יתוּ אֶת־כָּל־שָׂרֵ֥י הָעָ֖ם מֵעָ֑ם וְכָל־שְׁלָלָ֥ם שִׁלְּח֖וּ לְמֶ֥לֶךְ דַּרְמָֽשֶׂק׃In the spring, the army of Aram went to war against Joash. They entered Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the leaders of the people, and they sent all the plunder to their king in Damascus. 24Want die leër van Aram het met 'n klein getal manne gekom, en tog het die HERE 'n baie groot leër in hulle hand gegee, omdat hulle die HERE, die God van hulle vaders, verlaat het. So het hulle oordele oor Joas voltrek.כִּי֩ בְמִצְעַ֨ר אֲנָשִׁ֜ים בָּ֣אוּ׀ חֵ֣יל אֲרָ֗ם וַֽיהוָה֙ נָתַ֨ן בְּיָדָ֥ם חַ֨יִל֙ לָרֹ֣ב מְאֹ֔ד כִּ֣י עָֽזְב֔וּ אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם וְאֶת־יוֹאָ֖שׁ עָשׂ֥וּ שְׁפָטִֽים׃Although the Aramean army had come with only a few men, the LORD delivered into their hand a very great army. Because Judah had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, judgment was executed on Joash. 25En toe hulle van hom weggetrek het – want baie het hom verlaat – het sy dienaars teen hom saamgesweer weens die bloed van die seuns van die priester Jojada, en hulle het hom op sy bed doodgemaak, en hy het gesterf. En hulle het hom in die stad van Dawid begrawe, maar hom nie in die grafte van die konings begrawe nie.וּבְלֶכְתָּ֣ם מִמֶּ֗נּוּ כִּֽי־עָזְב֣וּ אֹתוֹ֮ רַבִּים֒ הִתְקַשְּׁר֨וּ עָלָ֜יו עֲבָדָ֗יו בִּדְמֵי֙ בְּנֵי֙ יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וַיַּֽהַרְגֻ֥הוּ עַל־מִטָּת֖וֹ וַיָּמֹ֑ת וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֨הוּ֙ בְּעִ֣יר דָּוִ֔יד וְלֹ֥א קְבָרֻ֖הוּ בְּקִבְר֥וֹת הַמְּלָכִֽים׃ סAnd when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left Joash severely wounded. His own servants conspired against him for shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

26En dit was die wat teen hom saamgesweer het: Sabad, die seun van Simeat, 'n Ammonitiese vrou, en Jehosabad, die seun van Simrit, 'n Moabitiese vrou.וְאֵ֖לֶּה הַמִּתְקַשְּׁרִ֣ים עָלָ֑יו זָבָ֗ד בֶּן־שִׁמְעָת֙ הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֔ית וִיה֣וֹזָבָ֔ד בֶּן־שִׁמְרִ֖ית הַמּוֹאָבִֽית׃Those who conspired against Joash were Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess. 27Wat sy seuns betref, en die godspraak teen hom, en die grondlegging van die huis van God, kyk, dit is opgeteken in die uitleg van die Boek van die Konings. En Amasja, sy seun, het in sy plek koning geword.

וּבָנָ֞יו הַמַּשָּׂ֣א עָלָ֗יו וִיסוֹד֙ בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים הִנָּ֣ם כְּתוּבִ֔ים עַל־מִדְרַ֖שׁ סֵ֣פֶר הַמְּלָכִ֑ים וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ אֲמַצְיָ֥הוּ בְנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ פThe accounts of the sons of Joash and the many pronouncements about him, and of the restoration of the house of God, are indeed written in the Treatise of the Book of the Kings. And his son Amaziah reigned in his place.
