1En ná hierdie dinge, in die koningskap van Artasasta, koning van Persië: Esra, seun van Seraja, seun van Asarja, seun van Hilkija,וְאַחַר֙ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה בְּמַלְכ֖וּת אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֣סְתְּא מֶֽלֶךְ־פָּרָ֑ס עֶזְרָא֙ בֶּן־שְׂרָיָ֔ה בֶּן־עֲזַרְיָ֖ה בֶּן־חִלְקִיָּֽה׃Many years later, during the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, 2die seun van Sallum, die seun van Sadok, die seun van Ahitub,בֶּן־שַׁלּ֥וּם בֶּן־צָד֖וֹק בֶּן־אֲחִיטֽוּב׃the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, 3die seun van Amarja, die seun van Asarja, die seun van Merajot,בֶּן־אֲמַרְיָ֥ה בֶן־עֲזַרְיָ֖ה בֶּן־מְרָיֽוֹת׃the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, 4seun van Serahja, seun van Ussi, seun van Bukki,בֶּן־זְרַֽחְיָ֥ה בֶן־עֻזִּ֖י בֶּן־בֻּקִּֽי׃the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki, 5die seun van Abisua, die seun van Pinehas, die seun van Eleasar, die seun van Aäron, die hoofpriester.

He was a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted Ezra all his requests, for the hand of the LORD his God was upon him.

For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, to practice it, and to teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel.
