Again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD; so He delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years,2En die hand van Midian was sterk oor Israel. וַתָּ֥עָז יַד־מִדְיָ֖ן עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִפְּנֵ֨י מִדְיָ֜ן עָשֽׂוּ לָהֶ֣ם׀ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶת־הַמִּנְהָרוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בֶּֽהָרִ֔ים וְאֶת־הַמְּעָר֖וֹת וְאֶת־הַמְּצָדֽוֹת׃and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.3En dit het gebeur: as Israel gesaai het, het Midian en Amalek en die kinders van die Ooste opgetrek, en hulle het teen hom opgetrek. Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites, and other people of the east would come up and invade them,4En hulle het teen hulle laer opgeslaan en die opbrengs van die land verwoes tot waar jy by Gasa kom; en hulle het geen lewensmiddele in Israel oorgelaat nie, nie lam of bees of esel nie.וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם וַיַּשְׁחִ֨יתוּ֙ אֶת־יְב֣וּל הָאָ֔רֶץ עַד־בּוֹאֲךָ֖ עַזָּ֑ה וְלֹֽא־יַשְׁאִ֤ירוּ מִֽחְיָה֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְשֶׂ֥ה וָשׁ֖וֹר וַחֲמֽוֹר׃encamping against them as far as Gaza and destroying the produce of the land. They left Israel with no sustenance, neither sheep nor oxen nor donkeys.5Want hulle en hul vee het opgetrek, en hulle tente, soos 'n menigte sprinkane in getal; en vir hulle en vir hulle kamele was daar geen telling nie; en hulle het in die land gekom om dit te verwoes. For the Midianites came with their livestock and their tents like a great swarm of locusts. They and their camels were innumerable, and they entered the land to ravage it.6En Israel het baie verarm vanweë Midian, en die Israeliete het tot die HERE geroep. Israel was greatly impoverished by Midian, and the Israelites cried out to the LORD.
7En dit het gebeur toe die Israeliete weens Midian tot die HERE geroep het,וַיְהִ֕י כִּֽי־זָעֲק֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־יְהוָ֑ה עַ֖ל אֹד֥וֹת מִדְיָֽן׃Now when the Israelites cried out to the LORD because of Midian,8dat die HERE 'n man, 'n profeet, na die Israeliete gestuur het; en hy het vir hulle gesê: “So sê die HERE, die God van Israel: Ek het julle uit Egipte laat optrek en julle uit die huis van slawe uitgelei,וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח יְהוָ֛ה אִ֥ישׁ נָבִ֖יא אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לָהֶ֜ם כֹּה־אָמַ֥ר יְהוָ֣ה׀ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אָנֹכִ֞י הֶעֱלֵ֤יתִי אֶתְכֶם֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וָאֹצִ֥יא אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִבֵּ֥ית עֲבָדִֽים׃He sent them a prophet, who told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.9en Ek het julle gered uit die hand van Egipte en uit die hand van almal wat julle onderdruk het, en Ek het hulle voor julle uit verdryf en hulle land aan julle gegee. I delivered you out of the hands of Egypt and all your oppressors. I drove them out before you and gave you their land.10En Ek het vir julle gesê: ‘Ek is die HERE julle God; julle mag die gode van die Amoriete, in wie se land julle woon, nie vrees nie.’ And I said to you: ‘I am the LORD your God. You must not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.’ But you did not obey Me.”
Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites.12En die Engel van die HERE het aan hom verskyn en vir hom gesê: “Die HERE is met jou, dapper held.” And the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon and said, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.”13En Gideon het vir hom gesê: “Ag, my heer, as die HERE met ons is, waarom het dit alles ons dan getref? וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֤יו גִּדְעוֹן֙ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י וְיֵ֤שׁ יְהוָה֙ עִמָּ֔נוּ וְלָ֥מָּה מְצָאַ֖תְנוּ כָּל־זֹ֑את וְאַיֵּ֣ה כָֽל־נִפְלְאֹתָ֡יו אֲשֶׁר֩ סִפְּרוּ־לָ֨נוּ אֲבוֹתֵ֜ינוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הֲלֹ֤א מִמִּצְרַ֨יִם֙ הֶעֱלָ֣נוּ יְהוָ֔ה וְעַתָּה֙ נְטָשָׁ֣נוּ יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖נוּ בְּכַף־מִדְיָֽן׃“Please, my Lord,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”14En die HERE het na hom gedraai en gesê: “Gaan in hierdie krag van jou, en red Israel uit die hand van Midian. Het Ek jou nie gestuur nie?” The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Am I not sending you?”15En hy het vir Hom gesê: “Ag, Here, waarmee sal ek Israel red? Kyk, my geslag is die geringste in Manasse, en ek is die jongste in my vader se huis.”aLetterlik: my duisend.וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנָ֔י בַּמָּ֥ה אוֹשִׁ֖יעַ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הִנֵּ֤ה אַלְפִּי֙ הַדַּ֣ל בִּמְנַשֶּׁ֔ה וְאָנֹכִ֥י הַצָּעִ֖יר בְּבֵ֥ית אָבִֽי׃“Please, my Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I save Israel? Indeed, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.”16En die HERE het vir hom gesê: “Omdat Ek met jou sal wees, sal jy Midian soos een man verslaan.”aOf: Ek sal sekerlik met jou wees, en jy sal Midian soos een man verslaan.וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֥י אֶהְיֶ֖ה עִמָּ֑ךְ וְהִכִּיתָ֥ אֶת־מִדְיָ֖ן כְּאִ֥ישׁ אֶחָֽד׃“Surely I will be with you,” the LORD replied, “and you will strike down all the Midianites as one man.”17En hy het vir Hom gesê: “As ek nou guns in U oë gevind het, doen dan vir my 'n teken dat dit U is wat met my praat. Gideon answered, “If I have found favor in Your sight, give me a sign that it is You speaking with me.18Moet tog nie van hier af weggaan voordat ek by U kom en my geskenk uitbring en voor U neersit nie.” Please do not depart from this place until I return to You. Let me bring my offering and set it before You.” And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.”19En Gideon het ingegaan en 'n bokkie berei, en ongesuurde brode van 'n efa meel. So Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and unleavened bread and an ephah of flour. He placed the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot and brought them out to present to Him under the oak.
And the angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And Gideon did so.21En die Engel van die HERE het die punt van die staf wat in Sy hand was, uitgesteek en die vleis en die ongesuurde brode aangeraak; en vuur het uit die rots opgekom en die vleis en die ongesuurde brode verteer; en die Engel van die HERE het uit sy oë weggegaan. Then the angel of the LORD extended the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread. And fire flared from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight.22En Gideon het gesien dat dit die Engel van die HERE was. When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!”23En die HERE het vir hom gesê: “Vrede vir jou! Moenie vrees nie; jy sal nie sterf nie.” But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”24En Gideon het daar 'n altaar vir die HERE gebou en dit HERE-Vrede genoem. So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
On that very night the LORD said to Gideon, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old, tear down your father’s altar to Baal, and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.26En bou 'n altaar vir die HERE jou God op die top van hierdie vesting, in die behoorlike orde, en neem die tweede bul en bring 'n brandoffer met die hout van die gewyde paal wat jy sal afkap.” Then build a proper altar to the LORD your God on the top of this stronghold. And with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down, take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering.”27En Gideon het tien manne van sy dienaars geneem en gedoen soos die HERE vir hom gesê het; en dit het gebeur, omdat hy die huis van sy vader en die manne van die stad gevrees het om dit by dag te doen, het hy dit by nag gedoen. So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had told him. But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city, he did it by night rather than in the daytime.28En die manne van die stad het in die môre vroeg opgestaan, en kyk, die altaar van Baäl was afgebreek, en die gewyde paal wat daarby was, was omgekap, en die tweede bul is op die altaar wat gebou is, opgeoffer. When the men of the city got up in the morning, there was Baal’s altar torn down, with the Asherah pole cut down beside it and the second bull offered up on the newly built altar.29En hulle het vir mekaar gesê: “Wie het hierdie ding gedoen?” וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֔הוּ מִ֥י עָשָׂ֖ה הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַֽיִּדְרְשׁוּ֙ וַיְבַקְשׁ֔וּ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ גִּדְעוֹן֙ בֶּן־יוֹאָ֔שׁ עָשָׂ֖ה הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃“Who did this?” they said to one another. And after they had investigated thoroughly, they were told, “Gideon son of Joash did it.”30Toe het die manne van die stad vir Joas gesê: “Bring jou seun uit, dat hy sterf, want hy het die altaar van Baäl afgebreek en die gewyde paal wat daarby was, afgekap.” Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he has torn down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.”31Maar Joas het vir almal wat teen hom gestaan het, gesê: “Wil julle vir Baäl stry? Of wil julle hom red? But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Are you contending for Baal? Are you trying to save him? Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If Baal is a god, let him contend for himself with the one who has torn down his altar.”32En op daardie dag het hy hom Jerubbaäl genoem, en gesê: “Laat Baäl teen hom stry, omdat hy sy altaar afgebreek het.”aDie naam beteken Die naam Jerubbaäl beteken: Laat Baäl stry. So on that day Gideon was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let Baal contend with him,” because he had torn down Baal’s altar.
Then all the Midianites, Amalekites, and other people of the east gathered together, crossed over the Jordan, and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.34Toe het die Gees van die HERE Gideon beklee, en hy het op die ramshoring geblaas, en Abiëser is agter hom opgeroep. So the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, who blew the ram’s horn and rallied the Abiezrites behind him.35En hy het boodskappers deur die hele Manasse gestuur, en ook Manasse is agter hom aan opgeroep; en hy het boodskappers na Aser en na Sebulon en na Naftali gestuur, en hulle het opgetrek om hulle te ontmoet. Calling them to arms, Gideon sent messengers throughout Manasseh, as well as Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, so that they came up to meet him.
36En Gideon het vir God gesê: “As U werklik Israel deur my hand gaan red, soos U gespreek het,וַיֹּ֥אמֶר גִּדְע֖וֹן אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים אִם־יֶשְׁךָ֞ מוֹשִׁ֧יעַ בְּיָדִ֛י אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃Then Gideon said to God, “If You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said,37kyk, ek sit 'n wolvlies op die dorsvloer neer; as daar dou op die vlies alleen is, en op die hele grond is dit droog, dan sal ek weet dat U Israel deur my hand sal red soos U gesê het.”הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י מַצִּ֛יג אֶת־גִּזַּ֥ת הַצֶּ֖מֶר בַּגֹּ֑רֶן אִ֡ם טַל֩ יִהְיֶ֨ה עַֽל־הַגִּזָּ֜ה לְבַדָּ֗הּ וְעַל־כָּל־הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ חֹ֔רֶב וְיָדַעְתִּ֗י כִּֽי־תוֹשִׁ֧יעַ בְּיָדִ֛י אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃then behold, I will place a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said.”38En so het dit gebeur; en hy het die volgende môre vroeg opgestaan en die vag uitgedruk, en dou uit die vag gewring, 'n kom vol water. And that is what happened. When Gideon arose the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew—a bowlful of water.39Toe het Gideon vir God gesê: “Laat U toorn nie teen my ontvlam nie, dat ek net hierdie keer nog spreek. Then Gideon said to God, “Do not be angry with me; let me speak one more time.
