1Toe het al die Israeliete uitgegaan, en die vergadering het soos een man bymekaargekom, van Dan af tot by Berseba en die land Gilead, by die HERE te Mispa.

וַיֵּצְאוּ֮ כָּל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַתִּקָּהֵ֨ל הָעֵדָ֜ה כְּאִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֗ד לְמִדָּן֙ וְעַד־בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע וְאֶ֖רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֑ד אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה הַמִּצְפָּֽה׃Then all the Israelites from Dan to Beersheba and from the land of Gilead came out, and the congregation assembled as one man before the LORD at Mizpah. 2En die leiers van die hele volk, al die stamme van Israel, het hulle opgestel in die vergadering van die volk van God: 400 000 man te voet wat die swaard trek.

3En die Benjaminiete het gehoor dat die Israeliete na Mispa opgetrek het. וַיָּקֻ֤מוּ עָלַי֙ בַּעֲלֵ֣י הַגִּבְעָ֔ה וַיָּסֹ֧בּוּ עָלַ֛י אֶת־הַבַּ֖יִת לָ֑יְלָה אוֹתִי֙ דִּמּ֣וּ לַהֲרֹ֔ג וְאֶת־פִּילַגְשִׁ֥י עִנּ֖וּ וַתָּמֹֽת׃And during the night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house. They intended to kill me, but they abused my concubine, and she died. 6Toe het ek my byvrou gegryp en haar in stukke gesny en haar deur die hele gebied van die erfdeel van Israel gestuur, want hulle het ontug en skandelikheid in Israel gepleeg.

וָֽאֹחֵ֤ז בְּפִֽילַגְשִׁי֙ וָֽאֲנַתְּחֶ֔הָ וָֽאֲשַׁלְּחֶ֔הָ בְּכָל־שְׂדֵ֖ה נַחֲלַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּ֥י עָשׂ֛וּ זִמָּ֥ה וּנְבָלָ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Then I took my concubine, cut her into pieces, and sent her throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance, because they had committed a lewd and disgraceful act in Israel. 7Kyk, julle is almal Israeliete; gee hier vir julleself ’n woord en raad.”הִנֵּ֥ה כֻלְּכֶ֖ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הָב֥וּ לָכֶ֛ם דָּבָ֥ר וְעֵצָ֖ה הֲלֹֽם׃Behold, all you Israelites, give your advice and verdict here and now.” 8Toe het die hele volk soos een man opgestaan en gesê: “Ons sal nie elkeen na sy tent gaan nie, en ons sal nie elkeen na sy huis afdraai nie.וַיָּ֨קָם֙ כָּל־הָעָ֔ם כְּאִ֥ישׁ אֶחָ֖ד לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹ֤א נֵלֵךְ֙ אִ֣ישׁ לְאָהֳל֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א נָס֖וּר אִ֥ישׁ לְבֵיתֽוֹ׃Then all the people stood as one man and said, “Not one of us will return to his tent or to his house. 9Maar nou, dit is die saak wat ons aan Gibea sal doen: ons trek daarteen op volgens die lot.וְעַתָּ֕ה זֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשֶׂ֖ה לַגִּבְעָ֑ה עָלֶ֖יהָ בְּגוֹרָֽל׃Now this is what we will do to Gibeah: We will go against it as the lot dictates. 10“En ons sal tien manne per honderd neem uit al die stamme van Israel, en honderd per duisend en duisend per 10 000, om voedsel vir die volk te haal, sodat hulle, wanneer hulle by Geba van Benjamin kom, kan doen volgens al die dwaasheid wat dit in Israel gedoen het.”וְלָקַ֣חְנוּ עֲשָׂרָה֩ אֲנָשִׁ֨ים לַמֵּאָ֜ה לְכֹ֣ל׀ שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וּמֵאָ֤ה לָאֶ֨לֶף֙ וְאֶ֣לֶף לָרְבָבָ֔ה לָקַ֥חַת צֵדָ֖ה לָעָ֑ם לַעֲשׂ֗וֹת לְבוֹאָם֙ לְגֶ֣בַע בִּנְיָמִ֔ן כְּכָל־הַ֨נְּבָלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃We will take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to supply provisions for the army when they go to Gibeah in Benjamin to punish them for the atrocity they have committed in Israel.”

11So het elke man van Israel teen die stad vergader, soos een man, as metgeselle.וַיֵּֽאָסֵ֞ף כָּל־אִ֤ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־הָעִ֔יר כְּאִ֥ישׁ אֶחָ֖ד חֲבֵרִֽים׃ פSo all the men of Israel gathered as one man, united against the city.

12En die stamme van Israel het manne deur al die stamme van Benjamin gestuur om te sê: “Wat is hierdie kwaad wat onder julle gebeur het?וַֽיִּשְׁלְח֞וּ שִׁבְטֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֲנָשִׁ֔ים בְּכָל־שִׁבְטֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן לֵאמֹ֑ר מָ֚ה הָרָעָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִהְיְתָ֖ה בָּכֶֽם׃And the tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has occurred among you? 13“En nou, gee die manne uit, die seuns van Beliaal, wat in Gibea is, dat ons hulle kan doodmaak en die kwaad uit Israel kan uitroei.” Maar die Benjaminiete wou nie luister na die stem van hulle broers, die Israeliete nie.וְעַתָּ֡ה תְּנוּ֩ אֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֨ים בְּנֵֽי־בְלִיַּ֜עַל אֲשֶׁ֤ר בַּגִּבְעָה֙ וּנְמִיתֵ֔ם וּנְבַעֲרָ֥ה רָעָ֖ה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹ֤א אָבוּ֙ בִּנְיָמִ֔ן לִשְׁמֹ֕עַ בְּק֖וֹל אֲחֵיהֶ֥ם בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Hand over the wicked men of Gibeah so we can put them to death and purge Israel of this evil.” But the Benjamites refused to heed the voice of their fellow Israelites.

14Die Benjaminiete het uit die stede na Gibea bymekaargekom om uit te trek vir die oorlog teen die Israeliete.וַיֵּאָסְפ֧וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֛ן מִן־הֶעָרִ֖ים הַגִּבְעָ֑תָה לָצֵ֥את לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃And from their cities they came together at Gibeah to go out and fight against the Israelites. 15En die Benjaminiete uit die stede is op daardie dag getel: 26 000 man wat die swaard trek, behalwe die inwoners van Gibea, wat getel is as 700 uitgesoekte manne.וַיִּתְפָּֽקְדוּ֩ בְנֵ֨י בִנְיָמִ֜ן בַּיּ֤וֹם הַהוּא֙ מֵהֶ֣עָרִ֔ים עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וְשִׁשָּׁ֥ה אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁ֣לֵֽף חָ֑רֶב לְ֠בַד מִיֹּשְׁבֵ֤י הַגִּבְעָה֙ הִתְפָּ֣קְד֔וּ שְׁבַ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת אִ֥ישׁ בָּחֽוּר׃On that day the Benjamites mobilized 26,000 swordsmen from their cities, in addition to the 700 select men of Gibeah. 16Uit hierdie hele volk was daar 700 uitgesoekte manne wat linkshandig was; elkeen van hulle kon ’n klip na ’n haar slinger sonder om te mis.

מִכֹּ֣ל׀ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֗ה שְׁבַ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙ אִ֣ישׁ בָּח֔וּר אִטֵּ֖ר יַד־יְמִינ֑וֹ כָּל־זֶ֗ה קֹלֵ֧עַ בָּאֶ֛בֶן אֶל־הַֽשַּׂעֲרָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א יַחֲטִֽא׃ פAmong all these soldiers there were 700 select left-handers, each of whom could sling a stone at a hair without missing. 17En die manne van Israel is getel, behalwe Benjamin: 400 000 man wat die swaard trek; almal hierdie was manne van oorlog.וְאִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל הִתְפָּֽקְד֗וּ לְבַד֙ מִבִּנְיָמִ֔ן אַרְבַּ֨ע מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁ֣לֵֽף חָ֑רֶב כָּל־זֶ֖ה אִ֥ישׁ מִלְחָמָֽה׃The Israelites, apart from Benjamin, mobilized 400,000 swordsmen, each one an experienced warrior. 18Toe het hulle opgestaan en na Bet-El opgetrek en God geraadpleeg, en die Israeliete het gesê: “Wie moet vir ons eerste optrek vir die oorlog teen die Benjaminiete?” En die HERE het gesê: “Juda eerste.”וַיָּקֻ֜מוּ וַיַּעֲל֣וּ בֵֽית־אֵל֮ וַיִּשְׁאֲל֣וּ בֵאלֹהִים֒ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִ֚י יַעֲלֶה־לָּ֣נוּ בַתְּחִלָּ֔ה לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ן וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה יְהוּדָ֥ה בַתְּחִלָּֽה׃The Israelites set out, went up to Bethel, and inquired of God, “Who of us shall go up first to fight against the Benjamites?” “Judah will be first,” the LORD replied. 19En die Israeliete het die môre opgestaan en teen Gibea laer opgeslaan.וַיָּק֥וּמוּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּבֹּ֑קֶר וַיַּֽחֲנ֖וּ עַל־הַגִּבְעָֽה׃ פThe next morning the Israelites set out and camped near Gibeah.

20En die manne van Israel het uitgetrek vir die oorlog teen Benjamin, en die manne van Israel het hulle teenoor hulle by Gibea in slagorde opgestel.וַיֵּצֵא֙ אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וַיַּעַרְכ֨וּ אִתָּ֧ם אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מִלְחָמָ֖ה אֶל־הַגִּבְעָֽה׃And the men of Israel went out to fight against Benjamin and took up their battle positions at Gibeah. 21Die Benjaminiete het uit Gibea uitgetrek en op daardie dag 22 000 man van Israel tot op die grond verwoes.וַיֵּצְא֥וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֖ן מִן־הַגִּבְעָ֑ה וַיַּשְׁחִ֨יתוּ בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא שְׁנַ֨יִם וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ אָֽרְצָה׃And the Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down 22,000 Israelites on the battlefield that day. 22Maar die volk, die manne van Israel, het hulle versterk en hulle weer in slagorde opgestel op die plek waar hulle hulle op die eerste dag opgestel het.וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֥ק הָעָ֖ם אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֹּסִ֨פוּ֙ לַעֲרֹ֣ךְ מִלְחָמָ֔ה בַּמָּק֕וֹם אֲשֶׁר־עָ֥רְכוּ שָׁ֖ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃But the Israelite army took courage and again took their battle positions in the same place where they had arrayed themselves on the first day. 23En die Israeliete het opgetrek en voor die aangesig van die HERE gehuil tot die aand, en hulle het die HERE geraadpleeg en gesê: “Moet ek weer nader kom vir die oorlog teen die Benjaminiete, my broer?” En die HERE het gesê: “Trek teen hom op.”וַיַּעֲל֣וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיִּבְכּ֣וּ לִפְנֵֽי־יְהוָה֮ עַד־הָעֶרֶב֒ וַיִּשְׁאֲל֤וּ בַֽיהוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַאוֹסִ֗יף לָגֶ֨שֶׁת֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה עִם־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן אָחִ֑י וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה עֲל֥וּ אֵלָֽיו׃ פThey went up and wept before the LORD until evening, inquiring of Him, “Should we again draw near for battle against our brothers the Benjamites?” And the LORD answered, “Go up against them.” 24Toe het die Israeliete op die tweede dag nader gekom teen die Benjaminiete.וַיִּקְרְב֧וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשֵּׁנִֽי׃On the second day the Israelites advanced against the Benjamites. 25Benjamin het hulle op die tweede dag uit Gibea tegemoet getrek en nog 18 000 man van die Israeliete tot op die grond verwoes; almal hierdie was swaardtrekkers.וַיֵּצֵא֩ בִנְיָמִ֨ן׀ לִקְרָאתָ֥ם׀ מִֽן־הַגִּבְעָה֮ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשֵּׁנִי֒ וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ֩ בִבְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל ע֗וֹד שְׁמֹנַ֨ת עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ אָ֑רְצָה כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה שֹׁ֥לְפֵי חָֽרֶב׃That same day the Benjamites came out against them from Gibeah and cut down another 18,000 Israelites, all of them armed with swords. 26Al die Israeliete en die hele volk het opgegaan en by Bet-El gekom, en hulle het gehuil en daar voor die aangesig van die HERE gesit; en hulle het op daardie dag gevas tot die aand, en brandoffers en vredeoffers voor die aangesig van die HERE opgedra.וַיַּעֲל֣וּ כָל־בְּנֵי֩ יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל וְכָל־הָעָ֜ם וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ בֵֽית־אֵ֗ל וַיִּבְכּוּ֙ וַיֵּ֤שְׁבוּ שָׁם֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּצ֥וּמוּ בַיּוֹם־הַה֖וּא עַד־הָעָ֑רֶב וַֽיַּעֲל֛וּ עֹל֥וֹת וּשְׁלָמִ֖ים לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to Bethel, where they sat weeping before the LORD. That day they fasted until evening and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD. 27En die Israeliete het die HERE geraadpleeg — want die ark van die verbond van God was in daardie dae daar,וַיִּשְׁאֲל֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּֽיהוָ֑ה וְשָׁ֗ם אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים בַּיָּמִ֖ים הָהֵֽם׃And the Israelites inquired of the LORD. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there, 28en Pinehas, die seun van Eleasar, die seun van Aäron, het in daardie dae voor Hom gestaan — en gesê: “Moet ek nog weer uittrek vir die oorlog teen die Benjaminiete, my broer, of moet ek ophou?” En die HERE het gesê: “Trek op, want môre sal Ek hom in jou hand gee.”

וּ֠פִינְחָס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֨ר בֶּֽן־אַהֲרֹ֜ן עֹמֵ֣ד׀ לְפָנָ֗יו בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵם֮ לֵאמֹר֒ הַאוֹסִ֨ף ע֜וֹד לָצֵ֧את לַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה עִם־בְּנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֥ן אָחִ֖י אִם־אֶחְדָּ֑ל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ עֲל֔וּ כִּ֥י מָחָ֖ר אֶתְּנֶ֥נּוּ בְיָדֶֽךָ׃and Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, served before it.) The Israelites asked, “Should we again go out to battle against our brothers the Benjamites, or should we stop?” The LORD answered, “Fight, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”

29Israel het hinderlaers rondom Gibea gestel.וַיָּ֤שֶׂם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֹֽרְבִ֔ים אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֖ה סָבִֽיב׃ פSo Israel set up an ambush around Gibeah. 30Die Israeliete het op die derde dag opgetrek teen die Benjaminiete en teen Gibea slagorde opgestel, soos keer op keer.וַיַּעֲל֧וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י וַיַּעַרְכ֥וּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֖ה כְּפַ֥עַם בְּפָֽעַם׃On the third day the Israelites went up against the Benjamites and arrayed themselves against Gibeah as they had done before. 31Die Benjaminiete het uitgetrek om die volk te ontmoet; hulle is van die stad weggetrek. They began to attack the people as before, killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah. 32Die Benjaminiete het gesê: “Hulle word voor ons verslaan soos die eerste keer.” Maar die Israeliete het gesê: “Laat ons vlug en hulle van die stad af na die paaie toe wegtrek.”וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֔ן נִגָּפִ֥ים הֵ֛ם לְפָנֵ֖ינוּ כְּבָרִאשֹׁנָ֑ה וּבְנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אָמְר֗וּ נָנ֨וּסָה֙ וּֽנְתַקְּנֻ֔הוּ מִן־הָעִ֖יר אֶל־הַֽמְסִלּֽוֹת׃“We are defeating them as before,” said the Benjamites. But the Israelites said, “Let us retreat and draw them away from the city onto the roads.” 33En elke man van Israel het van sy plek opgestaan en by Baäl-Tamar slagorde opgestel, en die hinderlaers van Israel het uit hulle plek uitgebreek, uit Maäre-Geba.

48En die manne van Israel het teruggekeer na die Benjaminiete en hulle met die skerpte van die swaard geslaan, uit die stad, die manne, tot by die vee, tot by alles wat gevind is; ook al die stede wat gevind is, het hulle aan die brand gesteek.
