1En toe al die konings wat oorkant die Jordaan was, in die bergland en in die Laagte en langs die hele kus van die Groot See teenoor die Libanon, dit hoor — die Hetiete en die Amoriete, die Kanaäniete, die Feresiete, die Hewiete en die Jebusiete —וַיְהִ֣י כִשְׁמֹ֣עַ כָּֽל־הַמְּלָכִ֡ים אֲשֶׁר֩ בְּעֵ֨בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֜ן בָּהָ֣ר וּבַשְּׁפֵלָ֗ה וּבְכֹל֙ ח֚וֹף הַיָּ֣ם הַגָּד֔וֹל אֶל־מ֖וּל הַלְּבָנ֑וֹן הַֽחִתִּי֙ וְהָ֣אֱמֹרִ֔י הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ הַפְּרִזִּ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃Now when news of this reached all the kings west of the Jordan—those in the hill country, the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon (the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites)—2het hulle hulle saamgetrek om oorlog te voer teen Josua en teen Israel, eenparig.aLetterlik: met een mond.וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֣וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו לְהִלָּחֵ֥ם עִם־יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ וְעִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל פֶּ֖ה אֶחָֽד׃ פthey came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.
But the people of Gibeon, having heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,4en ook hulle het met lis gehandel: hulle het gegaan en hulle as gesante voorgedoen, en verslete sakke vir hulle donkies geneem en verslete wynsakke wat gebars en toegebind was,aSommige manuskripte lees: en hulle het vir hulle padkos voorsien.וַיַּעֲשׂ֤וּ גַם־הֵ֨מָּה֙ בְּעָרְמָ֔ה וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ וַיִּצְטַיָּ֑רוּ וַיִּקְח֞וּ שַׂקִּ֤ים בָּלִים֙ לַחֲמ֣וֹרֵיהֶ֔ם וְנֹאד֥וֹת יַ֨יִן֙ בָּלִ֔ים וּמְבֻקָּעִ֖ים וּמְצֹרָרִֽים׃acted deceptively and set out as envoys, carrying on their donkeys worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.5en verslete en gelapte skoene aan hulle voete en verslete klere aan hulle lyf; en al die brood van hulle padkos was droog en beskimmeld.aOf: verkrummel. They put worn, patched sandals on their feet and threadbare clothing on their bodies, and their whole supply of bread was dry and moldy.
They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land; please make a treaty with us.”7Die manne van Israel het vir die Hiwwiete gesê: “Miskien woon julle te midde van ons; hoe sal ons dan 'n verbond met julle sluit?” But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell near us. How can we make a treaty with you?”8Hulle het vir Josua gesê: “Ons is u dienaars.” וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ אֲנָ֑חְנוּ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֧ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ מִ֥י אַתֶּ֖ם וּמֵאַ֥יִן תָּבֹֽאוּ׃“We are your servants,” they said to Joshua. Then Joshua asked them, “Who are you and where have you come from?”9Hulle het vir hom gesê: “Uit 'n baie ver land het u dienaars gekom ter wille van die Naam van die HERE u God, want ons het die berig van Hom gehoor, en alles wat Hy in Egipte gedoen het,וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו מֵאֶ֨רֶץ רְחוֹקָ֤ה מְאֹד֙ בָּ֣אוּ עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ לְשֵׁ֖ם יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ כִּֽי־שָׁמַ֣עְנוּ שָׁמְע֔וֹ וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,10en alles wat Hy aan die twee konings van die Amoriete gedoen het wat oorkant die Jordaan was, aan Sihon, die koning van Hesbon, en aan Og, die koning van Basan, wat in Astarot was.וְאֵ֣ת׀ כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֗ה לִשְׁנֵי֙ מַלְכֵ֣י הָאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן לְסִיחוֹן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן וּלְע֥וֹג מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁ֖ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּעַשְׁתָּרֽוֹת׃and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.11Toe het ons ouderlinge en al die inwoners van ons land vir ons gesê: ‘Neem padkos in julle hand vir die pad, en gaan hulle tegemoet, en sê vir hulle: “Ons is julle dienaars, en sluit nou 'n verbond met ons.”’ So the elders and inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go to meet them and say to them: We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’12Dit is ons brood: warm het ons dit as padkos uit ons huise geneem op die dag toe ons uitgetrek het om na julle te gaan; en kyk, nou is dit droog en beskimmeld. This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But look, it is now dry and moldy.13En hierdie wynsakke wat ons nuut gevul het, en kyk, hulle het gebars; en hierdie klere van ons en ons skoene het verslyt weens die baie lang pad.” These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look, they are cracked. And these clothes and sandals are worn out from our very long journey.”14Die manne het van hulle padkos geneem, maar die HERE het hulle nie geraadpleeg nie.aLetterlik: die mond van die HERE het hulle nie gevra nie. Then the men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not seek the counsel of the LORD.15En Josua het vrede met hulle gemaak en 'n verbond met hulle gesluit om hulle te laat lewe; en die leiers van die vergadering het vir hulle gesweer. And Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore an oath to them.
Three days after they had made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites learned that they were neighbors, living among them.17Toe het die Israeliete opgebreek en op die derde dag by hulle stede gekom; en hulle stede was Gibeon en Kefira en Beërot en Kirjat-Jearim. So the Israelites set out and on the third day arrived at their cities—Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.18Maar die Israeliete het hulle nie verslaan nie, omdat die leiers van die vergadering vir hulle gesweer het by die HERE, die God van Israel. But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the leaders.19Al die leiers het vir die hele vergadering gesê: “Ons het vir hulle by die HERE, die God van Israel, gesweer, en nou kan ons hulle nie aanraak nie. All the leaders answered, “We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.20Dit sal ons met hulle doen: ons sal hulle laat lewe, sodat daar geen toorn oor ons sal wees weens die eed wat ons vir hulle gesweer het nie.” This is how we will treat them: We will let them live, so that no wrath will fall on us because of the oath we swore to them.”21En die leiers het vir hulle gesê: “Laat hulle lewe.” They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the whole congregation.” So the leaders kept their promise.
Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in fact you live among us?23Nou dan, julle is vervloek, en daar sal nooit van julle 'n slaaf ontbreek nie, en houtkappers en waterputters vir die huis van my God.”aLetterlik: afgesny word. Now therefore you are under a curse and will perpetually serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”24Toe antwoord hulle Josua en sê: “Omdat dit aan u dienaars uitdruklik vertel is wat die HERE u God sy kneg Moses beveel het, om die hele land aan julle te gee en al die inwoners van die land voor julle uit te verdelg, daarom het ons baie gevrees vir ons lewe vanweë julle, en ons het hierdie ding gedoen. The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.25En nou, kyk, ons is in u hand; soos dit goed en reg is in u oë om met ons te doen, doen dit.” Now we are in your hands.
