1Aangesien ons dan hierdie beloftes het, geliefdes, laat ons onsself reinig van alle besoedeling van vlees en gees, en heiligheid volbring in die vrees van God.ταύτας οὖν ἔχοντες τὰς ἐπαγγελίας, ἀγαπητοί, καθαρίσωμεν ἑαυτοὺς ἀπὸ παντὸς μολυσμοῦ σαρκὸς καὶ πνεύματος, ἐπιτελοῦντες ἁγιωσύνην ἐν φόβῳ θεοῦ.Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. 3Ek sê dit nie tot veroordeling nie, want ek het vooraf gesê dat julle in ons harte is, om saam te sterf en saam te lewe.⸂πρὸς κατάκρισιν οὐ⸃ λέγω, προείρηκα γὰρ ὅτι ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν ἐστε εἰς τὸ συναποθανεῖν καὶ συζῆν.I do not say this to condemn you. I have said before that you so occupy our hearts that we live and die together with you. 4Groot is my vrymoedigheid teenoor julle, groot is my roem oor julle; ek is vervul met vertroosting, ek loop oor van vreugde in al ons verdrukking.πολλή μοι παρρησία πρὸς ὑμᾶς, πολλή μοι καύχησις ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν· πεπλήρωμαι τῇ παρακλήσει, ὑπερπερισσεύομαι τῇ χαρᾷ ἐπὶ πάσῃ τῇ θλίψει ἡμῶν.Great is my confidence in you; great is my pride in you; I am filled with encouragement; in all our troubles my joy overflows.
a
Letterlik: ek is bo alle mate oorvloedig in die vreugde.5Want ook toe ons in Masedonië gekom het, het ons vlees geen rus gehad nie, maar ons is in alles verdruk — van buite gevegte, van binne vrese —Καὶ γὰρ ἐλθόντων ἡμῶν εἰς Μακεδονίαν οὐδεμίαν ⸀ἔσχηκεν ἄνεσιν ἡ σὰρξ ἡμῶν, ἀλλʼ ἐν παντὶ θλιβόμενοι— ἔξωθεν μάχαι, ἔσωθεν φόβοι—For when we arrived in Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were pressed from every direction—conflicts on the outside, fears within. 6maar God, wat die nederiges vertroos, het ons vertroos deur die koms van Titus;ἀλλʼ ὁ παρακαλῶν τοὺς ταπεινοὺς παρεκάλεσεν ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ Τίτου·But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the arrival of Titus, 7en nie alleen deur sy koms nie, maar ook deur die vertroosting waarmee hy oor julle vertroos is, toe hy ons vertel het van julle verlange, julle weeklag, julle ywer vir my, sodat ek my nog meer verbly het.οὐ μόνον δὲ ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ αὐτοῦ, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν τῇ παρακλήσει ᾗ παρεκλήθη ἐφʼ ὑμῖν, ἀναγγέλλων ἡμῖν τὴν ὑμῶν ἐπιπόθησιν, τὸν ὑμῶν ὀδυρμόν, τὸν ὑμῶν ζῆλον ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ, ὥστε με μᾶλλον χαρῆναι.and not only by his arrival, but also by the comfort he had received from you. He told us about your longing, your mourning, and your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced all the more. 8Want al het ek julle met die brief bedroef, is ek nie spyt nie; al was ek ook spyt (ek sien dat daardie brief julle, al was dit net vir ’n kort tyd, bedroef het),ὅτι εἰ καὶ ἐλύπησα ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἐπιστολῇ, οὐ μεταμέλομαι· εἰ καὶ μετεμελόμην (⸀βλέπω ὅτι ἡ ἐπιστολὴ ἐκείνη εἰ καὶ πρὸς ὥραν ἐλύπησεν ὑμᾶς),Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Although I did regret it—for I see that my letter caused you sorrow, but only for a short time— 9nou is ek bly, nie omdat julle hartseer geword het nie, maar omdat julle hartseer geword het tot bekering. Want julle het hartseer geword volgens God, sodat julle in niks deur ons skade sou ly nie.νῦν χαίρω, οὐχ ὅτι ἐλυπήθητε, ἀλλʼ ὅτι ἐλυπήθητε εἰς μετάνοιαν, ἐλυπήθητε γὰρ κατὰ θεόν, ἵνα ἐν μηδενὶ ζημιωθῆτε ἐξ ἡμῶν.yet now I rejoice, not because you were made sorrowful, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you felt the sorrow that God had intended, and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10Want die hartseer volgens God werk 'n bekering tot redding uit wat nie spyt veroorsaak nie, maar die hartseer van die wêreld werk die dood uit.ἡ γὰρ κατὰ θεὸν λύπη μετάνοιαν εἰς σωτηρίαν ἀμεταμέλητον ⸀ἐργάζεται· ἡ δὲ τοῦ κόσμου λύπη θάνατον κατεργάζεται.Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation without regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11Kyk, juis dit, om volgens God hartseer te word, watter erns dit in julle uitgewerk het, ja, verdediging, ja, verontwaardiging, ja, vrees, ja, verlange, ja, ywer, ja, straf! In alles het julle julleself bewys as rein in die saak.ἰδοὺ γὰρ αὐτὸ τοῦτο τὸ κατὰ θεὸν ⸀λυπηθῆναι πόσην κατειργάσατο ὑμῖν σπουδήν, ἀλλὰ ἀπολογίαν, ἀλλὰ ἀγανάκτησιν, ἀλλὰ φόβον, ἀλλὰ ἐπιπόθησιν, ἀλλὰ ζῆλον, ἀλλὰ ἐκδίκησιν· ἐν παντὶ συνεστήσατε ἑαυτοὺς ἁγνοὺς ⸀εἶναι τῷ πράγματι.Consider what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what zeal, what vindication! In every way you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12Dus, al het ek aan julle geskryf, was dit nie ter wille van hom wat die onreg gedoen het nie, en ook nie ter wille van hom wat die onreg gely het nie, maar sodat julle erns vir ons aan julle openbaar sou word voor God.ἄρα εἰ καὶ ἔγραψα ὑμῖν, οὐχ ⸀ἕνεκεν τοῦ ἀδικήσαντος, ⸀οὐδὲ ⸁ἕνεκεν τοῦ ἀδικηθέντος, ἀλλʼ ⸀1ἕνεκεν τοῦ φανερωθῆναι τὴν σπουδὴν ὑμῶν τὴν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ.So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did wrong or the one who was harmed, but rather that your earnestness on our behalf would be made clear to you in the sight of God. 13Daarom is ons vertroos. En by ons vertroosting het ons ons nog veel meer verbly oor die vreugde van Titus, omdat sy gees deur julle almal verkwik is;διὰ τοῦτο παρακεκλήμεθα. Ἐπὶ δὲ τῇ παρακλήσει ⸀ἡμῶν περισσοτέρως μᾶλλον ἐχάρημεν ἐπὶ τῇ χαρᾷ Τίτου, ὅτι ἀναπέπαυται τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ πάντων ὑμῶν·On account of this, we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were even more delighted by the joy of Titus. For his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14want as ek by hom iets oor julle geroem het, is ek nie beskaam nie, maar soos ons alles in waarheid aan julle gesê het, so het ook ons roem voor Titus waarheid geword.ὅτι εἴ τι αὐτῷ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν κεκαύχημαι, οὐ κατῃσχύνθην, ἀλλʼ ὡς πάντα ἐν ἀληθείᾳ ἐλαλήσαμεν ὑμῖν, οὕτως καὶ ἡ καύχησις ἡμῶν ⸀ἡ ἐπὶ Τίτου ἀλήθεια ἐγενήθη.Indeed, I was not embarrassed by anything I had boasted to him about you. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting to Titus has proved to be true as well. 15En sy innige genegenheid vir julle is nog groter, wanneer hy die gehoorsaamheid van julle almal onthou, hoe julle hom met vrees en bewing ontvang het.καὶ τὰ σπλάγχνα αὐτοῦ περισσοτέρως εἰς ὑμᾶς ἐστιν ἀναμιμνῃσκομένου τὴν πάντων ὑμῶν ὑπακοήν, ὡς μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου ἐδέξασθε αὐτόν.And his affection for you is even greater when he remembers that you were all obedient as you welcomed him with fear and trembling. 16Ek verbly my dat ek in alles vertroue in julle het.χαίρω ὅτι ἐν παντὶ θαρρῶ ἐν ὑμῖν.I rejoice that I can have complete confidence in you.
