1Paulus, apostel van Christus Jesus deur die wil van God, en Timoteus, die broer, aan die gemeente van God wat in Korinte is, saam met al die heiliges wat in die hele Agaje is:Παῦλος ἀπόστολος ⸂Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ⸃ διὰ θελήματος θεοῦ καὶ Τιμόθεος ὁ ἀδελφὸς τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ θεοῦ τῇ οὔσῃ ἐν Κορίνθῳ, σὺν τοῖς ἁγίοις πᾶσιν τοῖς οὖσιν ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ Ἀχαΐᾳ·Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the church of God in Corinth, together with all the saints throughout Achaia:2Genade vir julle en vrede van God ons Vader en die Here Jesus Christus.χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3Geseënd is die God en Vader van ons Here Jesus Christus, die Vader van die barmhartighede en God van alle vertroosting,Εὐλογητὸς ὁ θεὸς καὶ πατὴρ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὁ πατὴρ τῶν οἰκτιρμῶν καὶ θεὸς πάσης παρακλήσεως,Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,4wat ons vertroos in al ons verdrukking, sodat ons dié wat in enige verdrukking is, kan vertroos deur die vertroosting waarmee ons self deur God vertroos word.ὁ παρακαλῶν ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ πάσῃ τῇ θλίψει ἡμῶν, εἰς τὸ δύνασθαι ἡμᾶς παρακαλεῖν τοὺς ἐν πάσῃ θλίψει διὰ τῆς παρακλήσεως ἧς παρακαλούμεθα αὐτοὶ ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ.who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.5Want soos die lydinge van Christus oorvloedig oor ons kom, so word ook ons vertroosting deur Christus oorvloedig.ὅτι καθὼς περισσεύει τὰ παθήματα τοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς ἡμᾶς, οὕτως διὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ περισσεύει καὶ ἡ παράκλησις ἡμῶν.For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.6Of ons verdruk word, dit is tot julle vertroosting en redding; of ons vertroos word, dit is tot julle vertroosting, wat werksaam is in die volharding van dieselfde lyding wat ons ook ly;aSommige manuskripte lees: Of ons verdruk word, dit is tot julle vertroosting en redding, wat werksaam is in die volharding van dieselfde lyding wat ons ook ly.εἴτε δὲ θλιβόμεθα, ὑπὲρ τῆς ὑμῶν παρακλήσεως καὶ σωτηρίας· ⸂εἴτε παρακαλούμεθα, ὑπὲρ τῆς ὑμῶν παρακλήσεως⸃ τῆς ἐνεργουμένης ἐν ὑπομονῇ τῶν αὐτῶν παθημάτων ὧν καὶ ἡμεῖς πάσχομεν,If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which accomplishes in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we experience.7en ons hoop vir julle is vas, aangesien ons weet dat julle, soos julle deelgenote is van die lydinge, so ook van die vertroosting.aSommige manuskripte lees: ... en ons hoop vir julle is vas, of ons vertroos word, dit is tot julle vertroosting en redding; aangesien ons weet dat julle, soos julle deelgenote is van die lydinge, so ook van die vertroosting.καὶ ἡ ἐλπὶς ἡμῶν βεβαία ὑπὲρ ⸀ὑμῶν· εἰδότες ὅτι ⸀ὡς κοινωνοί ἐστε τῶν παθημάτων, οὕτως καὶ τῆς παρακλήσεως.And our hope for you is sure, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you will share in our comfort.
8Want ons wil nie hê dat julle onkundig moet wees, broers en susters, oor ons verdrukking wat in Asië plaasgevind het nie, dat ons uitermate, bo ons krag, beswaar is, sodat ons selfs aan die lewe gewanhoop het;aLetterlik: broers.Οὐ γὰρ θέλομεν ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν, ἀδελφοί, ⸀ὑπὲρ τῆς θλίψεως ἡμῶν τῆς ⸀γενομένης ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ, ὅτι καθʼ ὑπερβολὴν ⸂ὑπὲρ δύναμιν ἐβαρήθημεν⸃, ὥστε ἐξαπορηθῆναι ἡμᾶς καὶ τοῦ ζῆν·We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the hardships we encountered in the province of Asia. We were under a burden far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.9Ja, ons het self in onsself die doodsvonnis gehad, sodat ons nie op onsself sou vertrou nie, maar op God wat die dooies opwek;ἀλλὰ αὐτοὶ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς τὸ ἀπόκριμα τοῦ θανάτου ἐσχήκαμεν, ἵνα μὴ πεποιθότες ὦμεν ἐφʼ ἑαυτοῖς ἀλλʼ ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τῷ ἐγείροντι τοὺς νεκρούς·Indeed, we felt we were under the sentence of death, in order that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God, who raises the dead.10wat ons uit so ’n groot dood gered het en sal red, op wie ons hoop dat Hy ook nog sal red,aSommige manuskripte lees: en red,ὃς ἐκ τηλικούτου θανάτου ἐρρύσατο ἡμᾶς καὶ ⸀ῥύσεται, εἰς ὃν ἠλπίκαμεν ὅτι καὶ ἔτι ῥύσεται,He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. In Him we have placed our hope that He will yet again deliver us,11terwyl ook julle saamwerk deur die gebed vir ons, sodat vir die genadegawe aan ons uit baie persone deur baie dank gegee word ten behoewe van ons.aSommige manuskripte lees: ten behoewe van julle.συνυπουργούντων καὶ ὑμῶν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν τῇ δεήσει, ἵνα ἐκ πολλῶν προσώπων τὸ εἰς ἡμᾶς χάρισμα διὰ πολλῶν εὐχαριστηθῇ ὑπὲρ ⸀ἡμῶν.as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the favor shown us in answer to their prayers.
12Want ons roem is dit: die getuienis van ons gewete, dat ons in heiligheid en opregtheid van God, nie in vleeslike wysheid nie, maar in die genade van God, ons in die wêreld gedra het, en nog meer teenoor julle.aSommige manuskripte lees: in eenvoud en opregtheidἩ γὰρ καύχησις ἡμῶν αὕτη ἐστίν, τὸ μαρτύριον τῆς συνειδήσεως ἡμῶν, ὅτι ἐν ⸀ἁγιότητι καὶ εἰλικρινείᾳ ⸀τοῦ θεοῦ, ⸀οὐκ ἐν σοφίᾳ σαρκικῇ ἀλλʼ ἐν χάριτι θεοῦ, ἀνεστράφημεν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ, περισσοτέρως δὲ πρὸς ὑμᾶς·For this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in relation to you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God—not in worldly wisdom, but in the grace of God.13Want ons skryf aan julle niks anders as wat julle lees of ook verstaan nie, en ek hoop dat julle tot die einde sal verstaan,οὐ γὰρ ἄλλα γράφομεν ὑμῖν ἀλλʼ ἢ ἃ ἀναγινώσκετε ἢ καὶ ἐπιγινώσκετε, ἐλπίζω δὲ ⸀ὅτι ἕως τέλους ἐπιγνώσεσθε,For we do not write you anything that is beyond your ability to read and understand. And I hope that you will understand us completely,14soos julle ons ook ten dele verstaan het, dat ons julle roem is, net soos julle ook ons s’n is op die dag van ons Here Jesus.καθὼς καὶ ἐπέγνωτε ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ μέρους, ὅτι καύχημα ὑμῶν ἐσμεν καθάπερ καὶ ὑμεῖς ἡμῶν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ κυρίου ⸀ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ.as you have already understood us in part, that you may boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of our Lord Jesus.
15En in hierdie vertroue wou ek eers na julle toe kom, sodat julle ’n tweede genade kon hê,aSommige manuskripte lees: ’n tweede vreugdeΚαὶ ταύτῃ τῇ πεποιθήσει ἐβουλόμην ⸂πρότερον πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐλθεῖν⸃, ἵνα δευτέραν ⸀χάριν ⸀σχῆτε,Confident of this, I planned to visit you first, so that you might receive a double blessing.16en deur julle na Masedonië te gaan, en weer van Masedonië na julle te kom en deur julle uitgeleide te kry na Judea.καὶ διʼ ὑμῶν διελθεῖν εἰς Μακεδονίαν, καὶ πάλιν ἀπὸ Μακεδονίας ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ ὑφʼ ὑμῶν προπεμφθῆναι εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν.I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to return to you from Macedonia, and then to have you help me on my way to Judea.17Toe ek dit dan wou doen, het ek dan ligsinnig gehandel? Of wat ek beplan, beplan ek volgens die vlees, sodat by my die Ja, ja en die Nee, nee sou wees?aLetterlik: het ek dan ligsinnigheid gebruik?τοῦτο οὖν ⸀βουλόμενος μήτι ἄρα τῇ ἐλαφρίᾳ ἐχρησάμην; ἢ ἃ βουλεύομαι κατὰ σάρκα βουλεύομαι, ἵνα ᾖ παρʼ ἐμοὶ τὸ Ναὶ ναὶ καὶ τὸ Οὒ οὔ;When I planned this, did I do it carelessly? Or do I make my plans by human standards, so as to say “Yes, yes” and also “No, no”?18Maar God is getrou, dat ons woord aan julle nie Ja en Nee is nie.πιστὸς δὲ ὁ θεὸς ὅτι ὁ λόγος ἡμῶν ὁ πρὸς ὑμᾶς οὐκ ⸀ἔστιν Ναὶ καὶ Οὔ.But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.”19Want die Seun van God, Jesus Christus, wat onder julle deur ons verkondig is, deur my en Silvanus en Timoteus, het nie Ja en Nee geword nie, maar in Hom het Ja geword;ὁ ⸂τοῦ θεοῦ γὰρ⸃ υἱὸς ⸂Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς⸃ ὁ ἐν ὑμῖν διʼ ἡμῶν κηρυχθείς, διʼ ἐμοῦ καὶ Σιλουανοῦ καὶ Τιμοθέου, οὐκ ἐγένετο Ναὶ καὶ Οὒ, ἀλλὰ Ναὶ ἐν αὐτῷ γέγονεν·For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed among you by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not “Yes” and “No,” but in Him it has always been “Yes.”20want hoeveel beloftes van God daar ook is, in Hom is die Ja; daarom is ook deur Hom die Amen aan God tot heerlikheid deur ons.ὅσαι γὰρ ἐπαγγελίαι θεοῦ, ἐν αὐτῷ τὸ Ναί· ⸀διὸ καὶ ⸂διʼ αὐτοῦ⸃ τὸ Ἀμὴν τῷ θεῷ πρὸς δόξαν διʼ ἡμῶν.For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him, our “Amen” is spoken to the glory of God.21Maar Hy wat ons saam met julle in Christus bevestig en ons gesalf het, is God,ὁ δὲ βεβαιῶν ἡμᾶς σὺν ὑμῖν εἰς Χριστὸν καὶ χρίσας ἡμᾶς θεός,Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ. He anointed us,22wat ons ook verseël het en die onderpand van die Gees in ons harte gegee het.aOf: die Gees as onderpandὁ καὶ σφραγισάμενος ἡμᾶς καὶ δοὺς τὸν ἀρραβῶνα τοῦ πνεύματος ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν.placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come.
23Maar ek roep God as getuie aan oor my siel dat ek, om julle te spaar, nie weer na Korinte gekom het nie.aOf: teen my siel.Ἐγὼ δὲ μάρτυρα τὸν θεὸν ἐπικαλοῦμαι ἐπὶ τὴν ἐμὴν ψυχήν, ὅτι φειδόμενος ὑμῶν οὐκέτι ἦλθον εἰς Κόρινθον.I call God as my witness that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth.24Nie dat ons oor julle geloof heers nie, maar ons is medewerkers van julle vreugde, want deur die geloof staan julle.aOf: in die geloofοὐχ ὅτι κυριεύομεν ὑμῶν τῆς πίστεως, ἀλλὰ συνεργοί ἐσμεν τῆς χαρᾶς ὑμῶν, τῇ γὰρ πίστει ἑστήκατε.Not that we lord it over your faith, but we are fellow workers with you for your joy, because it is by faith that you stand firm.
